I had a doberman (rescued from a shelter) when my kids were born, everyone (especially the in laws) kept telling me to watch him with the kids. He was awesome with them. Had to have him put down when the kids were three :sad1:
Recently we had a bad experience with a friends Chihuahua who bit both the kids they are petrified of any dog at the moment.

Yeah this is in the back of my mind also @dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457)

The Chihuahua is constantly tormented by the three kids of the owners. It was just a pity my kids went to stroke him at a bad time.
I was a little concerned as my dog had been with me nearly 8 years then suddenly he went from being no1 to no3 but he was great with it. I think bringing a puppy in as a new member of the pack is a good idea.

Working Cocker Spaniel - Not a Show Cocker as you will forever at the Pet Parlour !
Perfect dogs , Shihtzu dogs can be snappy , like most small dogs . Mine below

Parents got me a Labrador when I was 13 - most loyal creature ever... lived to be 17 and then broke my heart.

we have a springer spaniel at the house i rent
lovely thing even with little people.
i think any dog is fine if raised from a pup correctly.
-
like garrardrj said maybe a medium/large dog is better with kids

In my experience, small breeds seem to be more likely to nip at people..
the dog equivalent of small man syndrome
-
Also if you play golf or can walk a Cocker on the course they will find golf balls very easily by smell . Ours has found around 2000 since October - Some of them below :happy2:

Bloody he'll that is some find and I live behind a golf course :signLOL:

Siberian husky has to be one of the most placid dogs I've encountered. Hardly ever barks and takes no notice of my mates newly born girl. Great dogs.

+ 1 for a labrador. Mine too lived past 17 and was the most loyal, loving pet imaginable and remember that being a retriever they have been bred to not bite. :happy2:

I have a Lhasa Apso, very similar breed to the Shihtzu's.
Lovely breed of dog, little fluffballs I like to refer to them as.
As a puppy they are absolutely adorable too.
They are fine around children, so long as they aren't smothered and annoyed
Otherwise they will nip at you.
And their teeth can be quite sharp once they get past the age of about 3/4.
They like to have their own space a fair bit.
This is the same for my mates two Lhasa's as well.
Shihtzu's temperament may be a bit tamer though than a Lhasa's?
I'd be surprised if this was the case though.
