Hi People
I've tried registering as a mobile mechanic with TPS (Ok I am not a trader but I do service cars for friends and family and anyone could register a business and make a few thousand as a sideline income) but they haven't registered me.
Looking online it appears that some car clubs are getting registered legitimately and the membership details that you get from the forum when you pay to be a full member constitute trade membership which would open up a lot of discount to us all.
Is this a possibility for this club?

You know what Rob... thats a great idea.
Because I have a thousand thing to do at the moment can I ask you to contact them and see what steps we need to take to implement something like that?
I agree... it would be a great deal.
Thanks
Rich

Ok mate, will do - lets hope they take us seriously!
-
I shall look forward to the outcome of this. Potentially really useful!
-
Great idea let us know how u get on.
-
Great idea i'd need a personal shopper though.
-
Be good to see what they say.
-
Fantastic idea matey, hopefully they will see just how much trade this will send there way. :congrats:
-
Great idea. Followed.

Hi. This sounds like a great idea. How does registration with TPS work ? Do you register with a local branch (not so useful for us) or with whole network so you could use any branch. Perhaps those in the trade will know answer to this already.
-
I will be phoning them tomorrow and will let you know where we stand.
Having thought about it further I don't hold out much hope of a few hundred people getting discount just because they are members of a free internet club but you never know!
-
Any developments?

^^^^ +1 I'm intrigued!

Sorry guys I hoped to call before I went away on a short break but work went crazy,
I'm aiming to call at lunchtime....

Right fellas - some unexpectedly good news.....
I spoke to my local branch today (Swindon) as there is no UK contact number for the whole TPS group to set up a MK5GolfGTi.co.uk club membership.
I spoke to a chap (John if I remember correctly) who said that if any of our members mentioned that they were from this club then they could 'do us a good deal'.
Obviously this isn't quantifiable in terms of set discount but in my mind any discount is better than none.
What I would suggest is the following:
1/ Get the price of the part you want from the VW dealer first for comparison including VAT etc
2/ Rock up to your local TPS shop (it will be a bit of a gamble if it isn't the Swindon branch as he couldn't speak for all of the branches) and try your luck mentioning you are a member of mk5golfgti owners club (sounds a bit more established than just an internet forum). If that doesn't work then perhaps mention that one of our members discussed club discount with the Swindon branch who were happy to assist.
Rich - could you give us an idea of membership numbers? I think it might be good leverage if we can quote a decent number of potential customers to them if they treat us right!
Good luck - why not post up on here to let us know how you get on and we can then keep track on friendly branches......
I'm off on holiday shortly but will be trying my luck with a Rev G dv next week!

Hope you didn't mind Rob, I've just spoken to my local depot -TPS Manchester (South) in Stockport. They don't have a specific account for car clubs/forums but they do use a "Trade Cash Account" which we can use. I asked the advisor about what discount we would get and he confirmed that it would be the same discount as any other trade customer.
He said that this is TPS Manchester (South) specific and couldn't speak for any other depot.
Might be worth other members calling their local TPS depot to see if they can make purchases on the Trade Cash account also?
Hope this helps
Rich

Oooo bdounding promising.
We've got 12,000 members. Obviously not all active.
-
Rich - would it be worth starting a register of the TPS depots that have the Trade Cash account that members can use?
-
Just for a bit of info as I'm pretty sure all tps accounts are front the same head office effectively, trade cash account is basically there entry level trade discount. Discount is upped depending on account spend, but I don't think this includes trade cash, as most of the branches use this for people wanting to pay cash outwith their company being involved and for mobile mechanics etc and obviously this account would show lots of spend so would be changed to maximum discount, which would just be a mistake!
-
Good work chaps - doesn't matter how we get the discount as long as we can all save some cash! Trade cash account sounds perfect Rich.
A database would be excellent - the more we use each branch the more they will recognise the club name and hopefully not reject our members!
-
From my experience if you just call/go in and say your in the trade they'll usually give you upto 20% discount depending on what your buying. Most general stuff is 15%, trim is around 7% etc.
If your challenged just say your in sales at whatever local dealer springs to mind - Iv never been asked to prove anything. It's worth knowing that "trade cash account" doesn't mean you have to pay with notes, they'll accept cards too. The trade cash account is good for them to sell to the public and unlike a real trade account they get the money immediately without having to wait a few months for payment from traders. You'll find TPS are very keen for members of the publics business, just need to approach it like your trade and that's all they need to know :happy2:
Also remember they will usually quote exc. VAT
-
The whole idea for starting this was that people have been increasingly told to go away unless they have a trade account. I think it used to be much easier for the public to get parts but recently they have clamped down as they are run by VW group who don't want to sell to the public at discount.
I applied for a trade account as a mobile mechanic - ok it was a lie but I service my families cars and I have to carry my tools from the shed to the drive :) and I got no reply from them.
-
I'm just saying that you don't need to set an account up with them. Say your ordering for cash and ask for the discount. Really isn't so complicated that you need to actually set up an account with them. Iv always bought new stuff from TPS (various branches) and got full trade discount without needing to get an account or prove anything. Maybe I asked nicely :signLOL:
-
I used the London City TPS at the weekend. They were helpful on the phone and had the parts waiting for me - I had part numbers ready. Said it was for "cash sale collection" & all was good.
-
That's a point - Iv always had the part numbers ready for them
-
No excuse not to have part number: :happy2:
