Title: Golf GT Sport 140 (sold) now Black GTI
Post by: Danno84 on August 08, 2015, 06:55:43 pm
So i was set on getting a mk5 gt sport,

took me a while to find one that fitted what i wanted, knew i wanted a 3 door united grey gt tdi, and that it had to have the later front on as i felt it looks alot better,

I finally found this on in south wales which was about 3 hours from me but was worth the trip, the mileage although high to some 105k was right for my budget, it had the black grill and head lights that i wanted and full heated leather

First thing i order was a set of coilovers, nothing to fancy just jom's for now when my wallets a bit fuller i ll change to something a bit better,

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fdubiedan84%2FMobile_Uploads%2F2387D578-D411-47AE-A13A-0B96C89FFEFD_zpsv0so70f1.jpg&hash=29e20ff90a56fb517b3eead39fb295391d56ffd2)

although i said i wanted the black grill it was more the head lights i wanted due to planning to change to the gti style honeycomb front

the next thing was probably the hardest as with any car project is wheels,

spent ages looking for what i wanted,

ended up choosing Dare dr-X2 in 8x18 in matt gun metal finish and i really like them

Congrats on the purchase! Great upgrades so far.

Aesthetically might just need a GTI rear spoiler and a roof spoiler.

For the front brakes you just need to upgrade to GTI carriers, pads and discs.

A remap will make that engine work much better and a bit more economical with a sensible throttle use.

Thanks for positive comment :)

I plan to go for gti style exhaust and rear bumper spoiler and roof spoiler very soon :)

As for remap I'd like do I ve plugged a psi running box in and it went very well on it but took off after a day's not sure I trust them as just sits in line if the injector loom :/

Looks ace,  :drinking:

What are you planning on doing with your original bumper, I'm after a GT sport to give mine a little facelift!?

Jack.

I like them both so its a tough decision but if it was me I would probably paint the gti grill matt black and lose the red stripe

It's a personal taste matter. With GT Sport grills you can fit R-Line fog grills. Either bumper would look better with the front spoiler from the Ed. 30/R-Line.

I want the ed30 spoiler might have it textured tho as not sure I want colour coded skirts and rear valance,

Thanks for the input so far, main plan with the car was to build a gti spec diesel hence the gti grill and red brakes,
Should probably stick to the plan rather than second guess my self

Ed. 30 replicas sold in ebay are smooth black ABS plastic or smooth black reinforced fibreglass (not textured like the side skirts). Just the GTI spoiler (that has the lower lip compared to yours) has the same textured surface.

Yeah, missed the lip in the picture. Sorry. :ashamed:
That's very good for you. I'm curious to see the final result of that texturization.

I think that it's a trim that covers the lower grill surround. In the Jettas and Variants it's chrome, in GT and GT Sports it's black.

I think it comes included with the lower bumper grill, so you don't need to get it separately. :happy2:

I think you might have lost some torque there...

Petrol engines are different from diesel engines, don't follow the same mods.

I wonder what benefits the ram air filter would have on the diesel? If any? I'm not clued up at all on induction kits and what not but was hoping to sort one for my gt sport (petrol twin charger) at some point so will be interesting to see for sure! Also did you go to the stealers for the roof spoiler or tps?

Doubt there's any benefit from the induction kit at all, but it was free so I thought I'd give it ago, if there's no gains or even a loss as suggested it will come off,  doesn't sound or feel any different so prob won't stay on,

The spoiler was an eBay find,

That looks very tidy mate. Love the wheels - had a very similar set on my old mk4.

If it was me though I'd lose the GTD badge (we all know there's no such thing as a mk5 GTD) and maybe spray the red strip black/grey. That should move you away from the GTI Replica look..! But that's just me.

Put gtd badges on as didn't want to use gti badges, but if I lose the badges the grill has the mounting point on it and just looks odd with out a badge, would of liked it if my gt sport badge would of fitted the grill,

For me it was VW's mistake of not making a GTD in the mk4 and mk5 generations. The mk4 had the GTI TDI, but not with the PD150 engine, AFAIK.

You can argue about the red stripe in the grill but I personally like it better that way. A chrome strip would look a bit weird, I think.

I made my own mk5 GTD and it has enough power and handling to wear that badge.

I ve been trying to build a diesel version of the gti to warrant the gtd badge, fitting gti styling, with the plans to boost the power to around 200bhp and 300 lbs torque,
And fit gti or s3 brakes,

I think the red strip works well don't like them in other colours, it matcha in with the red calipers and contrasts the grey nicely

Had the car remapped just before Christmas with revo software, make a massive difference car should be around 185/190 bhp and 300 lbs of torque :)

The down side to this is its killed my turbo, had my suspicions it was weak any way,

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs1321.photobucket.com%2Fuser%2Fdubiedan84%2Fmedia%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F4BC0CA43-5E89-4B84-AC4A-61928D45EE5F_zpsfzt9egfk.mp4.html&hash=3fdf828b3c73b7873fef49fcd46918f3dbe92aae)

so went for a grand new Garrett unit, cars back to full health now and I'm happy haha

A remap does find any weakness in the cars set up,least you got it all sorted now
How you finding the brakes as I found I  had to upgrade them after wards
Title: Re: Golf GT Sport 140
Post by: Danno84 on January 01, 2016, 09:06:28 pm
Got a fairly good deal on turbo at £500, was a new unit not re con, brakes seem fine but I don't really drive the car hard, as for economy if you use the extra power it's it's mid 40s mpg, but drive sensible and it's a lot better than before it was mapped
Title: Re: Golf GT Sport 140
Post by: bluebert92 on January 01, 2016, 09:24:03 pm
That's not too shabby at all! I'm going to get mine mapped in July time with either revo hopefully, I suppose I could always test my turbo over the next few weeks and see if I should pre empt it all! I average sort of 40 mpg most journeys but that's without giving it any beans

Mine had the same front bumper as the gti from factory just different grills,
On yours you would either need too change the front panel too a gt/gti one or trim the gti bumper too fit,

Ok thanks! I've got the standard tdi pre facelift model so very plain Jane! Would need to put a whole new bumper on as I don't think the front panel would fit. Just wondering where the mods would need to be and I've read you need to support the radiator to the engine...?

The radiator carrier is the front panel, this can be swapped easily without the need to remove the rads at all, the gti bumper would then fit straight on with no problems

I never liked the colour-coded centre grill. It's the contrast between the body work and the black centre grill that really does it for me in the GT Sport/GTI/Ed. 30..

Totally this!

I have a black car, so will never get that nice contrast that looks so good. Saying that, Dans car looks great!

I don't think the system is compatible, just the newer BT kits (7P6 or 3C0). It has to be compatible with A2DP.
