As long as it looks the same ---, as the lesser spec Golfs have the brake carrier integral to the hub where as the GTI has seperate carriers. Wheel bearings are different too.

hi all,

in the process of changing a broken front spring and top mount. the shock to hub mount bolt has snapped, theres a local breakers yard to me, does anyone know if the hub is the same on a standard golf mk5 to a gti one?  thanks

VCDS Arrived. Getting misfires across all cylinders, mainly 3/4. Still P2293. Checking measuring blocks it seems my fuel rail pressure drops massively from 50 to 5 bar when I give the car any throttle. Could my replacement injector be the cause of this? Changing it again might be the best option I think.

Fitted the new Meyle low pressure fuel pump to my Edition 30.  Have only had 1 cold start since installing it as I've been away, but unfortunately it still spluttered into life (without priming it, to test new fuel pump)

Where there is a massive difference is the drive of the car since replacing the fuel pump - MPG is way up, I was struggling to get 29/30mpg despite driving sensibly for long periods and it had been like that for quite some time, I just put it down to being an older car, less economical etc etc.  It turns out this is not the case, and on the 2 drives I've had since replacing, I easily obtained around 34/35mpg for the whole journey, despite spirited driving and when trying to drive it frugally, obtained 39mpg!   On top of this, the car feels MUCH more urgent and nippy at lower rpms,  needing less throttle input to get it going, so maybe wasn't getting the fueling it needed.

Worth checking your low pressure fuel pump if you have bad MPG.  I'll do a couple more cold starts before admitting that I still have that issue, but at least it has been positive in other areas.

Also with a couple of local V-Dub enthousiasts🍻

And Edition 30 all by himself…

Front:
Brake carrier to wheel hub 190Nm (clean if reusing)
Guide Pin to brake carrier 30Nm

Rear:
Brake carrier to wheel hub rear (renew) 90Nm + 90deg
Brake caliper to brake carrier bolts (renew) 35Nm

Front and rear disc retaining screw 4Nm
8
The 2 guide pins the brake caliper sits on - 30nm
The 2 large bolts holding the brake carrier onto the wheel bearing housing - 190nm
Small screw holding the brake disk in place - 6nm
Brake bleeder bolt - 10nm

I recommend replacing the guide pins and the rubber housings they sit in. You can get parts from the QuickBrake brand which are cheap and decent. They are just some rubber sleeves, 2 pins with "locktite" applied onto them already and some vaseline.

If you are installing brand new pads and disks, you will need to undo the bolts for the brake carrier, otherwise the new disk does not fit. First install the disk, then the carrier, then the caliper with the pads in it already

The front brake pistons can be pushed back in place, the rear brakes require twisting and pushing at the same time so get one of those cheap brake piston toolkits.

If it's a k03, those injectors dont fail as bad as the k04 ones do so you're safe for te time being. also they are way cheaper than the k04 ones even brand new oem.

DSG service can be a hit or miss. If not done right, it'll run worse afterwards. Whoever does it needs to know exactly what they are doing.

Suspension is also relatively cheap. Throw in some Bilstein B4 sport version shocks and it's better than new. You can keep the gti springs or get black Eibach ones for a very slightly stiffer suspension. There's also the front suspension bushing which you can replace with the S3 ones also for super cheap.

Timing chain. You only really need to touch it if it rattles, it gives errors or your throttle hesitates/hangs. This one I suggest going all out and replacing everything relating to it. Chain, tensioner, adjuster sprocket, controller.

Windscreen is definitely worth it if worn. Night and day difference. Dont worry about the rust around it, just tell them to apply some windscreen glue there and to lift the glass higher. You wont even notice it and the glue keeps the water away from the metal so it wont rust further.

If you do disks, do pads as well. This is costly but it will freshen up your braking feel if done right.

Whether you should keep it or sell it is entirely your decision. do you like the car and dont mind investing in it or would you rather hand it off and get something newer which is much easier to make power on since just a stage 1 remap will make more than a k04 mk5 will. It's also more comfy, quieter and overall looks better (imo). I gont like hatchbacks that much but if I were to ever get one, it'd be a mk5 cause they really nailed the shape and it's sharps

My honest opinion? If you dont have any special attachment to your mk5 nor have you really invested into it and you have the option to go for the mk7, go for it.
