Well…..the plot thickens as these things do 😂

All the rear end is now stripped down, and I did get the bits for the front but I have ended up having to drop the front subframe due to two snapped bolts 😭

Then again, means I can now also clean up the subframe to match the rest which I am secretly happy about haha.

The rust on the suspension components is quite extensive, but thankfully most things are coming away ok

Just got the two front ABS sensors to get out then I’ll have everything off to get powder coated, in the meantime while those are getting done I’ll be starting the cleanup/rust proofing/painting ready for re-assembly.

Found a bit of rust hiding on the front passenger wing but luckily managed to find a clean genuine second hand one from a diesel breaker in the same colour so gonna pick that up soon - thanks fully the inner arches are sound even after finding all that crap behind the arch liner!

Does anyone know if you can still get the rear brake lines that come from under the passenger side to the rear corners? I am assuming you can still get them at TPS?

I’ve also bought all the seals for the rear calipers, gonna just rebuild them myself as I have access to a small blasting cab and I already have the paint, will put a separate post up about that.

Slow and steady…..although I do wanna get cracked on as I miss driving it

Mk1 looks great, that's a tidy engine install as well. AGU engine ?

I also  have also have recaros in mine. What brackets did you use to fit the recaros?I have scirocco subframes but they are binding making the seats very difficult to move forwards or back.

I'll put some photos up   of my mk1 on my Edition 30 thread. Mine was   around  260 bhp on the rollers and I have got a diff in it.

My sills sound exactly the same, rusting under the wings, like you wings need to come off see how bad it is.

Cheers mate, aye a wanted to make the install as tidy as I could for doing it myself, I wanted it to look like it was meant to be there all along!

Nice, will have a look at them when you post them, 260 sounds mental tbh 😂

For the seats, I made my own mounts, basically got an old set of runners and adapted them to fit the bottom of the recaros and then put the pin in it at the front.

Feel like I’m starting all over again with the MK5 😂 let’s just say it has escalated from a “rear subframe refresh” haha

Coming back from Nurburgring everything seemed fine, until I got the "low engine oil level" warning after 500 km of checking the oil level.
It seemed strange but I didn't think much of it. But than the situation repeated... In short, during the trip to Nurburgring, 20 laps around the track and some driving around the place, in total about 2400 km the car consumed about 200ml of oil. Coming back, around 1700 km, the car consumed 1.7 liters of oil  :sad1:
Something was clearly wrong with the car... It could have been the turbo, the PCV, the valve stem seals or worn piston rings / cylinder bore scoring.

Took the car to the mechanic and:

So, the car clearly had issues with the turbo. Not sure if the others were not contributing to the huge oil consumption issue or not...
I changed the PCV valves just to be safe and, since the worn piston rings (the ones responsible for cleaning the cylinder wall of oil) can't be tested, I just did a compression test and visually inspected the cylinder wall for scoring. There was a bit of scoring on cylinder 2, but I decided to leave it as is...

When changing the turbo I thought about a hybrid one or even a 2.0 engine swap. I think if I knew that for 5k EUR I would have a 2.0 TFSI engine and no issues with it and no warning lights in the dashboard, I would have done the swap... But nobody can guarantee that.
Also when looking for hybrid turbo, the overall cost would have been close to 2k EUR and my tuner didn't really trust any of the manufactures of the hybrid turbos. He recommended to go with OE or OEM and that's just what I did... The OE turbo was build by MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) and I replaced it with another MHI turbo, but without the VW logo.

Here are some photos of the install.

Here is how the top of the piston looked before and after the turbo change. As you can see there was a lot of oil on top of the piston, oil that went away with the new turbo.

All in all, I don't know if the issue is 100% solved. I did a test, about 250km and the oil consumption seem to be very low. I need to have at least 1000km before I can give a definitive answer.
As the next track day is sooner than 1000 km, I'll continue to "invest" money on the car :).

Crank sensor would give those issues, have you scanned the car?

How to Guides / Troubleshooting / Can't rev past 2500 RPM
« Last post by Adam0604 on June 20, 2026, 10:02:23 am »
Hi all,

Got a problem currently where car drives fine until it hits 2500RPM and tries to rev past that RPM.
Car then cuts power, needle starts going mad (up/down) and car feels like it lurches/judders.

If I drive the car in any gear below 2500RPM, it drives absolutely fine.

Anyone had this before / know what I should check for?

Mk5 General Area / Squeal after cat change
« Last post by blake on June 19, 2026, 03:27:43 pm »
Hey,

I’ve had the cat changed due to old one rattling. Picked up car today and don’t know if it’s placebo but seems to boost abit better, however it almost seems like it squeals abit now which increases under acceleration.

Anyone any ideas? I don’t like taking the car back if alls okay but on the same point I don’t want to get to an MOT in 9 months and find out I’ve got exhaust blowing or something.

Car looks great in that colour with the bbs.

Thank you!
I like the bbs's more than I thought I would...
Initially I would have liked a bit wider wheels with lower offset but same style. Like BBS VZ 033 (8x18, ET 44). But the price was to great to pass and now I am very very happy with the purchase.

Thanks for sharing your trip to Nurburgring, I plan on taking my mk5 when it's fully up together.

Just make sure you have good brakes and a reliable car and go. Don't wait until all stars align.
Have fun and share your experience as well!

Good to hear you mk1 is running well, I'm still having the mapping fine tuned. I still not driven mine yet but it is pretty much together.
Look foward to your progress, I'm starting on my inner arches and suspension later this month.

Cheers mate, aye I can just start to see the fronts starting to go under the bottom of the wing at the sill so gonna get the wings off n all and sort that before it gets too bad!

Aye it’s running sweet as a nut, it’s a shade over 200 brake and tbh I dunno if I’d want it any quicker than it is 😂 be good to see some pics of yours like - here’s a couple how mine stands now

The fastest lap of the trip:

Not quite proud of the time (still 18 seconds away from my best in 2017), but considering the engine and gearbox issues, I think the rhythm is quite good.
But I am happy of how I felt behind the steering wheel  :driver:.

P.S. The data overlay is, at times, way off... All of us have been experiencing GPS connectivity issues during the trip.
