Mk5 General Area / Re: Cold Air Intake Fitted - Too Loud? (help)
« Last post by RedRobin on June 24, 2025, 09:40:48 am »
I am very amused by the "I'm over 40" and "boy racer" comments in this thread. But I do respect that different drivers have different tastes.

I have had my Mk5 GTI since new in 2005 and fitted a Forge Twintake fairly early on. I also removed the bonnet's sound deadening and later on I fitted a fully carbonfibre bonnet with air extract vent. I absolutely love all the sounds my GTI makes (Milltek custom built exhaust system throughout) including the turbo lift-off swish-whip.

Guess how old I am ....

I was born in 1947 and have been a petrolhead all my life around high performance cars. So I am 78 and am too old to care two figs what other people think of me and my beloved Red Chariot which in fact is quite famous.

Very interesting thread and thanks for posting the finished result!

I have always disliked the Mk5 GTI instruments because they are so difficult to read!! Obviously the rev counter is easy to read and I can hear the revs anyway. My solution to the speedo is to have a Road Angel with digital display in line-of-sight centrally at the base of the windscreen. The OEM speedo is about 10% inaccurate anyway and is legally allowed to be.

Mk5 General Area / 'quattro' GTi Possible?
« Last post by Marticus on June 23, 2025, 08:23:55 am »
Hi all,

As I've been on the lookout for a replacement engine, an A3 8p has come into my local breakers with a BWA engine, but it's also quattro.

Doing a 4wd conversion is something that's been sitting in the back of my mind for a while, so I'm wondering if it worth grabbing some of the other components at the same time.

Obviously they're the same platform, but I don't know if the 4wd parts are interchangeable between the quattro Audi's and the golf r32.

Anyone know anything about this?

When I was in the trade I worked as a tech for various marques, I had the tool that fits those , it was a Snap on thing.

I think the gearbox plug on VW was it's only use!

Bit of a waste of time painting the hub as  I’m going to swap to aluminium hubs which I thought at the time wouldn’t work with the brakes.

Whilst doing this I removed the arch liner treated the rust spots with bilt hamber de oxit gel followed by por15. Painted hub and fitted new FAG wheel bearing.
