Mk5 jetta - wheels question!!
« on: March 28, 2013, 09:12:13 pm »
Ok so after reading the wheel thread and browsing the net. I'm after a different set of rims - but I'm only doing it once!! I've got a few in mind. But I'm trying to keep this low & drive able - no scrubbing and can push it along the twisty Scottish roads.

Now I'm running 18" rims they are 7.5 et 40 and I'm on 225/40's - now all 4 wheels rub and the mudguards touch the floor over speed bumps.

I've seen cars on 18" rims around 8" or 8.5" et 35-45 that can fit with 215/40's. I've seen quite a few sets of rims I like.
BUT - is there any one running wide 17's?

Most of my driving I push along the B-roads to work & have a blast - or I'm cruising A-roads or dual carriage ways. I've been offered a set of 8.5x17 bbs rm's - maybe run some 215/45 tyres??

The size of the wheel doesn't really matter.

7.5 et40 with 225s I have genuinely no idea how you are rubbing.

At the front of my car I have 225/45/17 with 17x7.5 et 56 and at the rear I have 17x7.5 et 36 and have no rubbing at all. 225/40 is basically the same rolling profile so will not adjust the rolling diameter and thus the height which is not going to change the rubbing.

An 18x8.5 et35 will rub to high hell. You'd want an et40 at the least and if you do that, you need to do the front arch screw mod and run 205 tyres.
