Looking good mate, no horrors there.

A lot of the bolts are available as aftermarket, not sure about the subframe bolts. Can't see why not though.

I Use Autodoc to find  the parts and then use the part number to find them on Ebay.

So, been finding the time to get on with bits between work and other things but I feel this is going into full restoration now haha…..I need to keep myself from stripping the entire thing 😂

Everything has been cleaned and wire wheeled/flap disc’d then applied with the De-Ox gel and covered with clingfilm to keep it working over the next 24 hours.

I’ve also checked the rust “hole” - yeah it was worse than I thought but still not the worst I’ve seen, I’ve also discovered another in the drivers side front, weirdly at the top rather than the bottom corners…….but I should be able to tackle these myself as I’ve done a bit of this type of stuff before.








Also had to drill out and re-tap the subframe bolts that snapped….they were absolutely SOLID 😂







Finally, whilst I’ve been waiting for some more bits to turn up I decided to clean up all the wheel arch liners/plastics, I can fully vouch for this CarPro Perl - absolutely transforms plastics





Car is now all masked up and ready for some seam sealer/primer/stonechip/paint - all the stuff is done at the powder coating place so just need to go pick that up, however I’m leaving it there until the car is ready for it because I’m running out of space 😂



Hopefully next post should be it welded up and painted!

Making some good progress on it, shows how much rust a mk5 can hide. Caught it at the right  time.

Looks like I definitely  need to take off the sill covers, did you have any problem getting them off ?

Well impressed with that carpro pearl never seen that before.

Where did you get the sheeting for covering the car? btw got some pic's up of my mk1.

Aye defo caught it in time! There are more bits I could do if I wanted it perfect but it is my daily so I just want it to be useable.

The sill covers are on quite tight with the adhesive, you can cut it with a Stanley knife - but other than that it is just 2 torx screws under the sill then they slot into the guide rail that is on the sill, just lift them up and off

Aye a was well impressed with the plastics stuff, amazing

The sheeting is just from my local paint supplier, a 4m wide roll of it was about £25, theres loads in there.

Bit more progress - basically got all the De-Ox treatment done, washed it all down and prepped the surfaces, then gave it a prime with the Bilt Hamber primer:







Then moved onto the underneath - I’ve not done the full floor like but most of the rear and a few spots that were bubbling further along near to the front.

First step was a full degrease and buzz with the wire brush/flap disc







Also found another bit that needed cutting out and re-making 😭



Then primed and given a coat of stonechip







Then finally covered everything with a couple coats of LA7W and some lacquer - starting to take shape now 😎













Last things to do before fitting all the bits back on is to get the holes patched and welded (didn’t have enough time the other day so just wanted to get everything coated so it didn’t start to rust again being bare metal) and then give everything a coat of Dynax UC

Then need to make the new brake lines as none of the 4 old ones came off without shearing 😂 - suppose its another ‘While I’m in there’ job, then finally back on with the bits and hopefully get it finished off! The hope is to get it done before I go on Holiday at the end of the month 🤞🏻

Nah there is a small joining block just under the passenger footwell, they go to the ABS unit from there. I’m really hoping the front solid lines come out easily 🤞🏻

Took a while to get some updates on here because for some reason this site seems to pick and choose when it wants to load - not sure if it is just me or not!

So, been a bit slower going as I have had a few things on, but managed to get most of the welding buttoned up:

















Been and collected the bits from the powder coating place, they have come up really well (will add some pics at a later date)

Ordered all the parts/bolts I can think of from TPS, I can still get the new rear brake lines but the fronts are discontinued 😭 I have some pipe that I can use to make them up so not the end of the world!

Also need to get the rear calipers blasted - I have access to cabinet but it has been out of action for a bit, but it’s up and running now so shouldn’t be long for that, got a rebuild kit from Big Redd so gonna get those done, never done a set before so looking forward to that

Once those are done and the rear lines are fitted (they go under everything else) then it should be ready to start fitting everything up!

Out of interest how  many miles has yours done ?

Aye, it does seem to be more frequent these days, just times out when loading, once it is loaded it is fine but just getting there in the first place is the issue!

Mine is just about to click over 100k miles, it had 78k on it when I bought it, was a pretty clean example then

Finally getting round to getting an update on here! Been away on holiday and had some time off with the boy over the school holidays so that car progress has slowed down…..but managed to get on with a few jobs, good news is that I think that I have everything there ready to start installing!

Main thing I have been doing is sorting ANOTHER rust section which I found on the drivers gate rear sill (same as the other side) but it actually turned out to be worse! I didn’t take a photo of it before but it honestly looked like nothing, but I ended up having to cut away this much:



So, made another patch panel and get it welded in, seam sealered, painted and stone chipped - it’s not the prettiest but it is solid and should last another 20 years!







Also cut off and made some new rear bumper supports as they were completely rotten





Next, I moved onto the rear brakes, I’ve not refurbed a set of calipers before but thought I’d give it a go since the car is off the road, they came out pretty well.

I’m a member of a restoration club here in the northeast where I have access to various bits of machinery, blasting cabinet being one of them, so stripped them all down and blasted them first:











Then bought a seal kit from big redd to replace all the seals, wasn’t too bad to do, main issue was I snapped one the lugs off the internal circlip so had to order some more which hindered progress!





Then painted them all up ready for assembly, they have came out pretty well, just hope they don’t leak haha!





Then moved onto replacing the outer CV joints, the driveshafts were fine but it was more the fact that they were rusty so it was cheaper to just replace the outers and paint the rusty bits 😂





Other things I’ve done, I got replacement front to rear brakelines from TPS but the fronts from ABS unit to arches are discontinued so had to make those, I only got a couple of photos of those though! I had to put a join in the one to the drivers side as getting it in without removing the engine was pretty much impossible without bending it all over!





Other than that I am hoping to start making much more progress as I could really do with it being back on the road! I cleaned and fitted the rear archliners and also gave the underside a coat of bilt hamber Dynax UC wax, just to make sure that it stays a silver as possible for as long as possible haha!
