Clunking Brakes.

I am hoping someone can help me or put my mind at rest before I torch my car. Right! I replaced my front brake pads last week for oem ones as my Mintex ones were driving me mad squeaking all the time. I followed a tutorial online and on here and did everything exactly to the letter. I have also since fitting them double checked my work again and all seems to be ok. Now when I drive forward and just touch the brake pedal enough to engage the brakes I get a single clonk, if I let off and reapply it does it again. I tried it going back and it does it then also. Now this happens at less than 5mph and the brakes are barely biting so its not the sub frame,bushes etc etc. I wondered if the pads move slightly or maybe air in the system might cause this and wanted to know what you guys thought? I know there's a few posts on here about this but I'm totally confused. Any help would be grateful as everytime I seem to sort something on this bloody car there's always something else and it's frustrating the hell out of me. I really thought a straight forward brake pad change to stop a squeaking pad would've been such a simple and rewarding fix but now its just gone from a feckin squeak to a bloody clonk.

Mine does that too.  Standard brakes.  It only does it when hot though.  I get multiple clicks and clunks though, and a squeal when turning whilst braking at slow speeds.

It probably is pad movement as you've already said, but it shouldn't cause noises like that.    I think in my case the whole lot is just knackered because I also get an inconsistent pedal.  Sometimes uber sharp bite, sometimes not.  Past experience points that to worn calipers/carriers, so I might just replace all of it tbh.  Standard 312s can't be that much?

Yeah same, the brakes work OK, it's just irritating as you say!   I had brand new rear calipers fitted by VW last year, along with new discs and pads. That stopped all the noises from the back brakes, so I'm sure a refresh at the front will achieve the same result!
I'll get some prices from VW.  I'm not interested in uprated or ebay pattern brakes, so I'll let you know the costs.

All of that is solid on mine (apart from the servo leaking, another bloody job on the list!!) so I doubt it.  Is yours definitely a clonk, as in heavy metal parts moving or touching?  My noise is more of a less severe clicking.  Can't feel it in the pedal or the floor, but it's defo the front brakes making the noise, and only on very light pedal presses at slow speeds.

If you still have the old ones, why not try putting those back on, and seeing if the clonking disappears again? I think I'd rather have a squeak than a clonk, ha ha - a clonk def sounds like something is moving / not fitting right. Would bug the hell out of me!

I did consider doing that as I've still got them. I'm thinking the click/clonk noise was probably there before but because they were squeaking when braking it drowned it out:confused:

Can't be doing with the clicking noise so I'm going to put the old pads back on tomorrow. In the meantime here's what VW supplied me. Anyone know from the numbers if they are correct for my car. I know its got golf/variant on the box but maybe gti pads are different:thinking:Cheers.

Yeah. My old squeaking pads are Mintex so I'm gonna grease them and put them back in.

I have a set of Delphi pads and discs I recently fitted to mine and they have to be the quietest and smoothest brakes I've ever had on a car, mine is a GT TDI but has the same 312mm front discs and the same calipers as the GTi. Really impressed by the quality of the Delphi stuff.

Old Mintex brake pads are back in and clicking has disappeared but the feckin squeak is back even though I cleaned them up and copper greased the backs and all the points that are in contact with metal. At 1st there was no squeaking and all was good but just as I got home after an hours drive it came back as I pulled into my drive. Just gonna put up with it for now as I've had enough:-(
