Engine Oil Recommendations Please Mk 5 GTI Standard?

Apologies, if this has been done to death, but what should I buy? Standard 2005 DSG car on 39k, driven like Miss Daisy most of the time, only the infrequent blast now and then....

Also any recommended garage services to do this near to me in Bournemouth, please, if anyone knows the area?

I would just stick to the dealer oil in that case.

Yeah I would agree. Too many folk jump to recommending Millers Nanodrive without considering use, stage of tune etc.

Millers is one of the thickest 5w40 oils out there and is intended for track use, not day to day driving

Thanks chaps. A lot of posters seem to mention the Millers stuff, but I'm guessing that's for the modded cars.

I called Breeze VW in Poole, and they quoted £210 for a minor oil and filter service, using Mobil 1 Fully synthetic 5/30; or £164 for VW oil fully synthetic 5/30. Had to push the lass to obtain the spec though - they seem to just think you'll go with headline price. Gone are the days when I had the kit to do this myself, sadly.

She said that brake fluid should be done  every 2 years too - sounds a bit OTT to me. What do you guys do? Is it just because it's brakes, and hey, I must do that, or does it really need changing every two years?

I've stopped using the Millers as my car gets used as a family daily more than anything these days. I'd rather change it twice as often for the same or less cost.

How much are they charging per litre of Mobil? 

507 Approval rather than "meets requirements of" is the important bit. It'll likely be the Quantum 5w30 which will be absolutely fine.

I've seen cheap red ATF oil sold as DSG oil and labelled as 'meeting the requirements of' proper DSG oil. Needless to say it didn't end well which is why I always look at manufacturers approval rather than the oil companies opinion these days. The more specifications they claim to meet the more likely they are to sell the oil

Brake fluid I treat as something that I change when it needs doing - it can be tested to determine the water content. I doubt many cars on the road have religiously had the brake fluid changed every 2 years

Didn't know dealers were offering Mobil 1.   I've been using 0W40 Mobil 1 "New Life" (think it's called 'FS' now) in my Ed30 for quite a while now.   The engine just seems to agree with it.   Uses hardly any, sorted a momentary clatter on cold starts and seems to run a bit smoother on it.....and it's £35 from ebay 

I've taken it to the dealer a couple of times now and they're fine to use my own oil.  They adjust the bill accordingly, and pop the left overs in the passenger foot well     Which is a good sign as some service centers lob the entire 5L in, which over fills it by 300ml.

The dealer Shell stuff (Ultra AVL 0W30) is actually a superb oil, but mine being stage 2+, it was using a bit of it.

Never really been a fan of oil with 'bits' in it, but the Millers is very popular in the scene.  I just can't bring myself to pay £60 for oil.  Don't need the 'bits' anyway as I've converted the fuel pump to a roller follower 

With the brake fluid every 2 years, it's not essential, but a good idea imo.  The reason being DOT4 absorbs water, and if that isn't flushed out in a timely fashion, it can actually corrode the ABS pump's pistons.
