Undiagnosed rattle with video link..
« on: May 27, 2021, 08:49:26 pm »
Hi there, I've got a rather worrying rattle coming from my engine. I had the cam chain replaced about 15k ago so I wouldn't expect it to that. Also replaced the cam follower and the timing belt has been done since. My mechanic was at a loss when he listened to the noise and said I should get other opinions before he tries to diagnose it. If I can then I'd like to post a video on here to show the noise. Thanks, Ollie.

Does the noise change or go away with more revs and/or load?

I would get a mechanics stethoscope from Amazon and do some probing.  Might be worth also getting an oil pressure gauge kit to check the pressure.  If it's a bit low, the VVT/chain gear will be quite noisy.  The oil pump/balancer assembly is a known weakness on these engines.

Thanks Pudding I'll get one of those stethoscopes and check the oil pressure.
