Thudding noise when switch engine off
« on: July 02, 2021, 07:24:59 pm »
I get a low thudding noise when I switch engine off after I've been driving a while.  Only about 5 thuds, which are relatively quiet.  Engine is off, car is stationary, so nothing mechanical is moving as far as I can figure.

Any ideas what could be making the noise?

if you switch on ignition, engine off, and sit for a few minutes - the climate control makes lots of weird noises - could it be that?

I thought that, but the climate noises are more higher pitched clicking type noises.  This is more of a quiet thud.

I suspect I'll never find out what it is as it's difficult to explain!

Check the dog bone bolts are tight....this created a thud on switching off in a previous golf of mine

Rock the engine when off to see if the gearbox or engine mounts are not shot.......this also made a thud in my wifes mk5 when the gearbox mount was dead

Worth checking the dogbone as suggested.

I got a similar thudding after shut down the other day. Sounded like it was coming from the right side of the engine bay.  My guess is gurgling in the coolant expansion tank.  Kind of sounded like the coolant after-run pump could be purging air out.

I checked the dogbone and it seems ok.  Unlikely as well as it thuds 4 or 5 times.

The coolant thing sounds interesting, as it only happens after a decent run, and the thud seems to get quieter by the 3rd or 4th thud.  Sounds like something not worth diagnosing as it'll take ages to find!

Don't worry about it.  Mine does it very occasionally. Maybe next time, pop the hood with the engine still running, jump out, then lean through the window and turn the engine off, then quickly stick your ear in the engine bay.....but it does sound like coolant line purge.  If you can't hear anything under there, it's probably just air being pushed out of the interior heat exchanger.
