1.6 FSi 2007 Oil & Filter Change.
« on: August 22, 2022, 10:25:02 am »
Hi guys,

I did a full oil/filter change at the weekend, completely drained it... I filled back up with 3.6l but upon checking the dipstick the next day it appears to be a bit high - the reading is just above the perforated mark on the stick.

I left the engine to drain for well over an hour after releasing the filter and there was barely a drip when I eventually put the sump plug in so I don't think there was any excess in the system? Now I'm starting to doubt the amount I refilled with? 3.6l is right for my engine isn't it?

Thanks.

Had you started it before checking the level ?

Thanks! I've checked when cold. 3.6l yeah - it's weird too, because if anything I'm stingy with my measurements so I would have expected it to be under...

My wife has the 1.6fsi and it takes about 3.1ltrs when I do oil changes......always seem to have about a litre left from a 4ltre can.

I think 3.6ltrs must be a completely dry engine.

Thanks man! Yeah, I think I might pull out a couple months f hundred ml and get my line down... I don't think its the end of the world if I leave it but it did seem a bit high.

I have to admit I have gone over the max mark on many occasions, so I wouldn't be concerned.

There is at least 0.7ltr of oil that wont drain - this is split between the sump and the cam chain/vacuum pump. Edit - those are numbers for a 2.0, not a 1.6

If you still concerned if you can either get your hands on vacuum pump with a skinny hose you can suck a bit out of the dip stick tube or careful release from the oil drain.

Yup. Every time I do an oil change I just chuck the entire 5 litre tub in. I can't be arsed to bugger about pouring exaclty 4.7 litres in. The excess will burn off eventually anyway

An extra 0.3L probably won't cause too much issue, but but unless you're dropping the sump etc, it's probably closer to an extra 0.6L.

I recently dropped the sump and I'm sure I put back in more than 4.6L to get to the mid-way mark on the dip stick.

Thanks all!

I've just checked, this is a few weeks off of the change and the engine was cool. Last driven at lunchtime - it's now half five.

Not my actual dipstick, I didn't think to take a picture but the reading was:

Circled in blue. I think I'm goin go leave it :happy2:
