Metallic/springy noise on hard cornering

(1/2) > >>

MattyAB19:
Hello,

I am really struggling to diagnose the cause of a noise on my mk5 GT tdi (170). It’s standard (hasn’t been lowered or anything) and the noise seems to be most noticeable and quite loud when cornering hard left at 30mph or more. Sounds sort of like loose or rubbing/springing metallic noise. I once had a car with a similar sound and the whole rear brake gubbins had corroded away within the rear drum brakes. But this has rear discs. It also happens occasionally when I let off the brakes just as I am slowly coming to a stop in a straight line. It seems to be coming from rear left wheel area but it’s very difficult to accurately pinpoint.

Please help if you can! :)

Flyingscotsman:
I would check to see if one of the rear coil springs is broken or cracked.  Quite common on these cars.

GVK:
Rear spring or rear disc back plate failed around the mounting points

Thanks both of you for the fast replies. Rear disc back plates look very rusty but seemed to be solid and no movement. Springs also look very rusty to the point where I could pick off bits (of old paint possibly), although I couldn’t see any obvious cracks. Here’s pics of the springs. I’m gonna try the springs first, then change back plates when I next get rear brakes changed. Thanks!

GVK:
They normally snap at the bottom, if you remove a rear wheel you can see the bottom of the springs better
