Buy a cheap spanner and use a grinder to make it thinner, that's what I did.

That's what I'm thinking. Angle grinder with the grinding disc right?

I usually use something like this, https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/pro102-61-2in-long-nose-locking-pliers/. It also means they can be used for more than just one job.
