Mk5 Golf GTI timing issues.
« on: April 01, 2026, 09:40:34 pm »
Hi guys, I have been working on my nephews 2006 Mk5 golf GTi (2.0tfsi BWA engine)
Background - Car timing chain snapped, pierced a hole in casing. (Chain not belt)
Had a full head rebuild, 8 inlet valves, pressure test, skim new head gasket etc by a friend, full service with correct grade oil etc. Eml illuminated so we read the codes.
Only one showing is P0011 A Camshaft Position (Bank1):Timing Over-Advanced Or
System Performance.
Live data in block 93 originally phase position bank 1 showed -10
I assumed that the mate had made a mistake with the timing so I stripped the chain side down and it was exactly as it was supposed to be.
I then stripped the belt side down, it was one tooth out so this was corrected.
We are still getting the same fault code as above.
Live data in block 93 is now showing phase position bank 1 -4
We have tried a new Delphi camshaft sensor and this doesn’t change anything.
We have tried a new aftermarket vvt solenoid and a used replacement and the phase position remained exactly the same.
I have visually inspected the wiring going to both the vvt solenoid and the camshaft sensor and can’t see anything obvious there.
Just to add, the car drives flawlessly, just goes into limp mode and brings the same fault up.
What’s my next steps? I am drawn to possible camshaft damage on the intent side. Is there anything anyone could think of that I may be missing before I strip the top end down and potentially have to spend another day one this bloody thing!
Many thanks in advance

This implies timing is out for sure if checked at hot idle so needs to be revisited.  When mine was -4 I had chain stretch on and the phaser could not compensate anymore.  When I changed that chain, I also did the phaser as it was worn along with the tensioner that usually causes the issues over time........then it was a perfect 0 at hot idle

I did have to use the cam tool to advance the inlet cam so the chain links were the perfect number apart..........there is a good video by Decimal tenths explaining.

Hi. Thank you for your reply.
We have already replaced both the timing chain, camshaft adjuster and tensioner. These were Febi so I know they are decent quality.
That’s a great video, that’s what I used to ensure the chain timing was perfect.
