....A batman is a soldier assigned to a commissioned officer as a personal servant. In my father's case, being a Royal Artillery Grenadier Guard, his batman was mostly his driver. The incident was when carrying an ammunition case between them and the batman (I wish I knew his name) shielded my dad and took a fatal wound.

Next question? What's a 'fag' in his first year at school? - Same as a batman.  :happy2:

Occasionally, but more often when I was a student. Often I found that those I picked up were students as well.

Hurdy:
I've picked up hitch-hikers in the past. No long distance hitchers, but several petrol-can wielding ones. Most memorable was a squaddie in civvie clothes, who was late getting back to Catterick. Took pity on him and took him there, which was a 15 mile diversion for me. Some of the stories made my toes curl :laugh:
