Why would you need to remove them for a service?

3 reasons Rich one so the alloy doesn't corrode it self to the hub so you can't get the wheel of if you get a puncture and the other is to check the pads as you can't see the inner one with the wheel on..the last one to take the pads out on a service to clean them up

Had the same problem,(albeit caused by previous owner not Vw) had to get my local indie to look at it, had to have it drilled out in the end, as they could find no tool to go round the outside of the bolt as its such a tight area.

the AA use this kit & the garage next door to where i work has this kit and it has always removed them
