VW Racing Carbon Bonnet..
« on: March 26, 2009, 10:42:29 am »
Hey,

Just thought it would be worth posting in this section too about the new VW Racing carbon bonnet that I have just fitted on my car.

Key points to note..

* 100% autoclave carbon fibre (no fibreglass in sight)
* Quite a bright carbon
* Tight weave
* Double sided
* 4.5KG
* £867 inc VAT and delivery..

Thats about it really..

My thoughts:

The Bonnet is amazing, really have to say I was surprised at the quality, its pretty stunning work! The box it was delivered in weighed more than the bonnet itself, goes to show just how light it is really..

Not convinced at the moment about leaving it in bare carbon, but the carbon weave is really nice, tight with no imperfections..

Anyways heres a load of pics!!

Absolutely stunning! Looks an excellent fit and is thinner than the OSIR bonnet as it doesn't have a fibreglass core. Hardcore lightweight.

However, the downside is that without a strut it's not so practical but I guess someone could fit one.

Unpainted across the whole width, I think it suits Candy White, Steel Grey and black cars but not most of the other colours.

You can fit the strut, there is a threaded hole for it, I haven't even tried to be honest, think I may do though because its a bit of a pain using my head as a prop whilst im working on the car haha..

there's no reason why you have to stick with the factory strut anyway mate, take a peek over at the DemonTweeks racing department for lightweight alternatives that wont shoot it off the car everytime you open it!

Very nice, whats the weight saving, I think the OSIR is about 7kgs, mines in getting painted at the moment, it was getting just a little bit to much attention and my kids said I was now officially having a mid life crisis.  :laugh:

VW Racing bonnet weights 4.5KG.. Standard is 15.5KG + Bonnet liner + Strut

So I think I have saved about 12-13kg..

Haha.. I think I like mine, but your right, does get a hell of a lot of looks!!

Why am I now thinking I need a CF bonnet?  :laugh:

It does seem to fit better than others I have seen. May have to have a little look on Sunday  :wink:

^^^^
I think it will fit better and match the thickness of the wings better, and also is a superior weave. Also it's lighter.

I'll be parked up alongside my mistress aka 'The Serial Manipulator' VWR's 300R at The Pod on Sunday, so we'll be able to make some direct comparisons. I'm not at all unhappy with my OSIR bonnet though.

I'd leave it a while, but would wrap it eventually.

IMO the "showiness" would get to me.

(I am a 31 year old teacher, though. :grin:)
