20" Alloy Wheels and the MK5 Golf
« on: March 29, 2009, 04:00:14 pm »
With the golf more infavour of wearing the 18" alloy wheel, and the 19" being the first choice with more aftermarket setups out there, what do we think to the 20"?

Something frought with fitment and rubbing issues?

Makes the car looks like a rollerskate?

Far to impracticle and just not a sensible choice for a daily car

or is it a perfect choice?

Discuss..........

feel free to use pictures to illustrate any + / - points your feel are worth mentioning

would like to see a pic of that car from the side to get a better idea.

i personally think an overwheeled car looks worse than an underwheeled car if that makes sense...

couldnt comment on fitting and what it would do to the handling but am guessing there would be issues with both.

i personally would love to have the money to do loads of things to my car but my insurance is kind of pushing the limit on what i want to pay (£600 a year) doesnt sound much but hate spending loads on insurance.

i guess it boils down to if you had a pot of cash would you rather spend it on the way it looks or the way it drives...

Candy white GTI, MRC tuning Remap - the rest will remain standard...

I reckon the ride will crack your nuts because of the low profile, but apart from that as long as you get a safe offset and width i dont think fitting will be an issue.
I feel they are just a teeny bit to big to keep the proportion's right though the style of wheel could help this.

here is a GTI with 20's

Certain style's of 20's suit the mk5 as eye candy  I think personally! But 19's would be as big as I'm going :happy2: That said while at Wrc in Preston yesterday there was a set of 20'' Audi S8 rims on 225/30/20 tyres that were going on an A3 they looked HUGE

big wheels look great on the mk5 , they balance the shape  :happy2:
However , the big issue is handling etc dynamics. Unsprung weight can go up significantly.
So if you are doing it , check out the wheel and associated tyre weights compared to OE
for me I wouldnt rule out 20's , but they would need to be rel light otherwise you are destroying one of the mk5 best points.

i'm sticking with the 19" fitment but couldn't help my eye straying  :fighting2:

personally i think as said with the correct rim the look works, the wrong rim however throws the dimentional appearance right out of the window

handling wise, to build a cruiser/show car then not an issue which is why i mentioned the daily aspect of fitting them, roundabouts have to be approached without fear

but 19" seems to offer the best compromise of looks and practicality

I think you've hit it on the head ^

As an aside, my Vectra VXR had 19's on, they made the car, however as it was my daily driver the run to work wasn't always comfortable and at times it felt like the VXR had flat tyres on poorly resurfaced areas of the road. Now with the GTI on 18's the same bits of road don't feel so rough (although they are probably a lot worse) 20's would be too much.
Cheers,

Wayne
