GT 170 Suspension comparison
« on: January 07, 2012, 06:04:24 pm »
I have a MK5 GT TDI 140 and wanted to know if anyone knows the difference between this and the GT 170 suspension setup I.E ride height, dampers etc. Does the 170 have a lower ride height than the 140? If so I guess it would be a matter of buying the 170 springs and replacing them in order to keep it OEM?

Exactly the same suspension mate, the only difference on some of them is the GT SPORT came with a 15mm lower ride height i.e like the GTI.

I wanted to lower the suspension but not by too much so it sits lower but not by too much, not sure if I have the sport version or not, its not on log book but it has 17" bbs alloys GTI style front grille, leather steering wheel. Any way to tell or would it be on log book only?

No idea where i saw the list with the different mods. The GT Sports with the dark headlights came with lowered suspension as Darren said.

Here is mine standard height (GT Sport so should be -15mm):

Lowered on springs so roughly between 30 - 40mm i guess?:

I think mine are standard also, was thinking of putting Eiback sportslines on with a 20mm drop.

All GT Sport are lowered by 15 mm, but not as stiff as a GTI.
170 BHP GTs may have slightly different spring becaus of more (front) weight
compared to the 140 BHP.

Look for the Volkswagen Driver Gear springs made by Eibach. These offer
the slightest lowering similar to the pictures shown.  :happy2:

ps:
I'd swap the 288 mm discs for the 312 mm ones

The 170tdi  BMN engine is the exact same engine has the 140tdi BKD its just the turbo/manifold, injectors and ecu that are different so no weight difference. Same block and cylinder head.

I know the differences between both 2.0 TDI engines, but VW specifies
different weights and fwik they also use different springs (refer to ETKA).

Driver Gear springs work well though and are very popular in the US,
but I'd recommend to use lowering springs with Bilstein dampers or at least
GTI dampers.

Do you know where I could pick some VW driver springs up because your car has the exact lowered look which I am after I.E link, part number etc
Thanks
