Midway through the exhaust system (approx under rear passenger footwell) sits a box - to increase the noise, people (mainly US based) cut this out and have a non res pipe welded in.

If you look at aftermarket systems, such as Miltek, you will have the option to go 'res' or 'non res', and two pipes are supplied in the system. Pick you're poison: 1) Loud, or 2) Louder

Thanks Gareth - I wasn't 100% sure about what the exact process was apart from knowing something was taken out and it made the exhaust louder !

For those who don't want a stage 2 remap or pay for an aftermarket exhaust, I wonder if this is a cheaper alternative ?

I guess it boils down to what you want from your car. For a bit more noise, a resonator delete and/or a backbox delete are relatively cheap and cheerful options, and can sound a bit better than standard.

However if you're plannng on tuning at a level more than just a remap, you may as well get a full TBE system, as the standard pipework will eventually become a restriction.

Has someone had this done to there car if so is the sound any good.?

I've just done mine today. It's a HELL of a lot louder than it was. Maybe a bit too loud, I havn't decided yet. It sounds good under load but makes a funny noise when you change gear at lower revs. I'm gonna see how I like it for the minute but may end up putting a small silencer back in just to make it a little less noisy. Quick video for ya, sorry it's crappy phone quality but it'll give you an idea.

This was about 30 mins after I went for a drive to test so you could class this as a warm start. It was alot louder when cold.
