AndrewJB on here will be a pretty good guy to ask, he had stage 2 DPF delete on his Leon Fr TDI and was pushing over 220Hp with a Shark remap.

When I was doing 25k+ a year, I had a leggy diesel hatchback and a toy car for fun. Was the cheapest way to get my motoring thrills, and punting a lazy older diesel around made me appreciate the performance of a lighter agile car all the more. The other good thing was that I'd park the diesel anywhere and not give a damn. Not suggesting a GTI is a car to be treasured (only a hatchback after all... flame suit on), but it's a bit more interesting and worthy of a bit more respect and care.

Might not suit your circumstances, but a 4-5 year old repmobile is a cheap way to travel. Failing that keep the E30, buy a Toyota Aygo and a mask - they're great on fuel and surprisingly good fun!

but, he said 14k or less.  Have a look on auto trader for 335d or 535d beamers for that price.  They arent many at all, and what few there are have massive mileage

That said what about a BMW Alpina D3? 215hp std, 245hp @ stage 1

Plenty of them for sub 14k, and thats alot of car for the money.

This is the same as mine. Stage 2 with DPF/EGR delete with shark software and running 216bhp/464nm.

Not when i can get a facelifted Octavia vRS TDi estate 170 in Dark grey with under 20k miles... Hmmm do I do it?

Swap it. My ed30 was stage 2+ , went to a 123d and didnt bother mapping it for 12 months, now stage 1and I have never regretted the swap... Once or twice something really powerful has passed and ive thought 'the golf wouldve stayed with that'... thats it...

The Octavia VRS Diesel are such a bargain.

Which car are you referring to? The Toerag will not better any of those Diesels when its average on a combined cycle is 23 MPG...

OP - The 170 Diesels are no doubt good cars but imo there are better diesels on the market for a similar price...I think the GTD is a bit expensive in comparison.

Perhaps dropping to a 330D would be not as large a performance drop than a TDI 170 would be.

If your heart is set on VAG then fair enough you wont end up with a shocker.

Also DPF removal may become an issue in the future if regulations change?

I'v come from a 170 PPD and it's the worst motor I have ever owned personally, you may be lucky and I hope you do. The injectors go wrong but are under warranty, the DPF's clog badly, and sensors go. I had my DPF removed prior to problems. The turbo had a bit of play so that was replaced, the head cracked leading me to fork out a £2500 bill.

I wish all this was a one off but theres quite a few people with the problems mentioned. Let's hope you do get good one.

I think the 09 onwards TDI is better for DPF reliability. There are many MK5 petrols and diesels with problems (Oil consumption anyone?) and I agree there is more than a one off!
