Air con issues...any ideas?
« on: July 04, 2009, 03:43:07 pm »
The lack of AC in my Golf bugged me one last time today so I took it to a garage to get a regas.

They informed me the system was showing it as full of gas, so they emptied the system and loaded it up again.  However when they got into the car, it was still blowing hot.  They also leak tested it with no problems.

They plugged in their Bosch diagnostic kit hoping to see an error code, nothing there.

So I'm stumped.  Will a compressor fault throw up a code?  Are sensors prone to not showing fault codes?

Any help would be great!

The fan is also not coming on, my BMW tech mate says that it won't come on without a working fan, so thats another thing to think about.

Thanks maxitrol

Have you checked all fuses?

Is your outside temp readout in the mfd screen seem correct?

Andy, pulled out and checked every fuse inside and under the bonnet yesterday, all of them were fine.

bacillus, the interior temp guage reading is fine too.

I have a feeling the fan's on the blink, as my mate said.  Thinking about it, I haven't heard it come on since I got the car.  What I'm going to do is keep an eye on the fan and the coolant temps (I stupidly forgot today whilst stuck in traffic at Silverstone), hopefully that'll be it.

Thanks for your suggestions guys!

I had this earlier after leaving Renault World Series. Aircon just wouldnt blow cold air, in spite of it working perfectly every day since we have bought it.

I gave up in the end and we opened the windows. After about 30 minutes i thought i would try it again, and low and behold, within 5 seconds the air was cooler than cool.

Sounds like a leaking sensor to me, happend with mine recently, seems fine now. Blows cold anyway, not freezing though.

I actually spoke to the local air con specialist today and he told me to bring it down as he doesn't think its fan related.

I don't have the money for him to check it out yet, but I think its got to be worth an hour of his time to save me throwing a good fan.

Its not the fan.  :rolleye:

If its an early MK5 theres a good chance that the compressor is seized.

AS MENTIONED IT MIGHT BE THE CLUTCH PART ON THE COMPRESSOR PUMP NOT ENGAGING PROPERLY

If you have a Zexel or valeo pump, VW has a tsb on it, it should be replaced with a Sanden pump (or Nippon Denso). I changed mine last summer and now it has stopped working again. The pressure valve is changed but in vain, the system is tested for leaks 3 times. Now i'm going to change the dials in the cabine, just to exclude them. Might be the Sanden pump even though it's only 11 month old  :scared:
Not the best part of a MK V the air con  :sad1:
