Newbie with questions!
« on: May 01, 2013, 09:57:59 pm »
Hi guys,

Long story short, I've had an 04 BMW 330Ci for over three years which I loved to bits. Unfortunately I wrote it off the other week (no one else involved, low speed, all suspension damage). After working out what it's cost me, and the fact I do 1000+ miles per month I have decided to get a cheaper (to run) Golf mk5 GTI for a year or so with 5 doors to help with some house renovations we are doing (tip runs etc). I spend over 7.5 hours a week in the car so it has to have a good stereo and an auto (dsg) box.

Anyhoo, I've found a 2006 5 door DSG GTI from a dealer locally and it seems sound. 3 owners, the last owner since 2009 and he has covered 20000 miles in that time. The car is on 65k miles, full VWSH, good tyres (Pirelli and uniroyals), sunroof, heated seats, xenons. I have been doing some homework but needed some advice. It seems like it has had an RNS 510 fitted, there is also an iPod lead in the centre console. There is some coiled up wiring on the left of the glovebox. I don't think it has Bluetooth. The dash is the lowline one I think (got the split in the middle) and the steering wheel has paddles but no buttons.

The items I use regularly (and need your advice on retrofitting) are: Bluetooth hands free and a2dp streaming (spotify), cruise control, buttons on wheel for volume and track skip, and rear parking sensors. I also have a 10inch diamond audio sub I would like to fit into one of the boot side custom boxes. Is this possible with the RNS510? For the Bluetooth i saw the 9w7, is this the best option and what price am I looking at? Is the someone in Kent that can do the whole lot for me and what sort of price would I be looking at?

This is the only pic I can get of the interior: https://www.dropbox.com/s/u2ub76bd22hptio/2013-05-01%2021.50.09.jpg

I drove the car, and there was a whine/vibration from one of the rear wheels (and the runflat indicator was on), and a rattling (sounded like a heat shield) from the front of the car near the passenger side of the engine, only on low idle. The dealer said they would of course get those items sorted before I bought it. Any ideas? The only SH the car has is the VW book, do I need to look for DSG servicing or is that part of the VWSH? It's priced around 7500, is that fair?

If anyone is interested, here are some pics of the 330: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4f8fb1fkm5d8der/SAM_1097.JPG

It had quite a lot of audio work done, but it was all hidden so you couldn't see it. I miss it every day :(

I can't answer all your questions but:

Your instrument cluster is midline, not lowline. Midline came as standard on GTIs.

Retrofitting steering wheel buttons on a DSG steering wheel with paddles is fairly easy, you can just add the buttons to your existing steering wheel. There are plenty of guides about on how to do this.

Cruise control is a similarly easy retrofit, VW do a kit. Some are more tricky but it is usually a case of just replacing the indicator stalk with the cruise control version. You will need access to VCDS to recode the car afterwards though.

If it's not got Bluetooth then pressing the Phone button on the RNS will just mute the radio, if it has Bluetooth then it will go into the phone menus.

RNS is definitely retrofitted for a car of this age, not something most people would do - forum members old car?
2012 Mk6 GTD. Tornado Red. TPMS, RNS510 and reverse camera retrofit.
