Variable valve timing

Hi people,

Simple question - does MKV GTI have variable valve timing - if so what kind and any other details would be helpful.

Im sure it has, but only on 1 camshaft!

MKV GTI (original engine anyway) has - continuous variable valve timing on the intake camshaft which is turbo-related.

So now you know!!

Anyone available to explain that a bit better?  TT?

Nope.  The Audi 'valvelift' actually varies the 'lift' of the valve, ie, how far down into the combustion chamber they poke.  Our beloved Mk5s don't have any variable lift technology, nor does the Mk6.  It would seem that Audi are keeping their valvelift to themselves!

Hmmmm . . . . the VVT on the inlet camshaft isnt turbo related at all.  It is simply controlled by the ECU map, and the actual timing is 'advanced' by oil pressure in a vane pump type of adjuster on the battery end of the engine.

Ok interesting - so when I step on the loud pedal its the ECU raising oil pressure to advance timing rather than a mechanical engineering advancement or have i got this all arseways?  :confused:

Just a general question when I have a few people reading this thread - do all direct injection engines use oil in normal use and are VAG engines different/better/worse in this respect?

In a basic sence, that is correct!



Just a general question when I have a few people reading this thread - do all direct injection engines use oil in normal use and are VAG engines different/better/worse in this respect?

Any engine can consume oil if they are not correctly run in - so it isn't unique to VAG engines
