Why take it off in the first place? My front grille is smoothed off so my plate is attached with suction cups

Ita a bit of a funny one as motorbikes dont need a front plate

Because where can you mount on on a motorcycle that can still be read and won't cause the rider to hit if they fall over the front or hit a pedestrian?
(that's why they were removed anyway as they were mounted perpendicular to the front mudguard previously in years gone by.

This guy knows.

People tend to forget the actual purpose of a number plate. It's for recognition.
If your car is stolen then the anpr readers on motorways will pick it up to give police an idea of the direction it's travelling.
Without it or with it on the dash it won't be read most the time.
I don't pull people when at work for it as it's dangerous for me to be slamming on my brakes and turning around, overtaking traffic just to pull you over and hear the excuse that the stickers dried up.

Haha well I drove back from Corby and when I pulled into a service station my number plate had started to peal off! So I pulled it off for the rest of the trip home it's been on my dash for a couple days! Just wondering if its illegal or not!

Haha there's so many opinions on this!!

Having no number plate is illegal, but I haven't one on mine for months and have never been pulled for it. As long as it's visible I'm sure it's fine. Al who commented is a policeman I believe. They won't bother turning round and pull you for it, but if you're parked they'll probably say something.

Having no front number plate does make the front end look a lot cleaner. I'm sure people
Are going to disagree with me but that's my opinion.

The spirit of the law is that one needs to be displayed. The wording is old and no doubt the intention was that vehicles need to have one in a position fixed as per the makers plinth. Type approval says it all.

Al is spot on. There was a show GTI stolen recently that ran no front plate, i wonder if this was picked up by the cameras.

@dombacon if you were stopped, a commons sense approach probably would be taken. Ultimately it's a £100 ticket or court. In your case I don't think it would be in the public interest to prosecute, but of course I'm not the deciding people.

@George10 traffic police would though :p

it's not illegal to remove it. what you do with your property is your business. but from what i understand of the law, it is illegal to drive on UK roads without it

Wow, great spelling there!

Really don't think you can call an officer a jobsworth for doing their job. If he caused an accident, then it wouldn't have happened if you had your plate on the front of the car which you are required to have by law!

And there's always a forum knob. :stupid:

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I would say he is entitled to be superior in this case as he is actually a policeman!
