Warm starting/cutting out issues
« on: October 25, 2009, 07:48:45 pm »
My car has some intermittent faults. It had these for a while now, and I can symphatise with dealers when it comes to intermittent faults, as its hard to fix something when its working fine infront of you. It had 12 fault codes at the time, however none really related to each other.

Anway car got reflashed and it was fine for a while, but the every now and again it will play up. Like refusing to start when warm, cutting out on idle, or cutting out after a WOT period when slowing down and clutch is depressed. Have had misfires detected on VAG COM, car running like a bag of nails with the engine shaking violently and the exhaust sounding like its blown.

When it refuses to start I have to depress the accelerator to bring the engine to life but even then after revving it for a while it can still die when left to return to idle. Then after it has done that and I physically stop it from dying by just revving it a little, the car will stay running but it will idle at up to 1500rpm and then say half hour later it can go back to normal.

Now I can only presume its either fuel or ignition related. Changed the sparks for some iridium ones but it still refused to start up once after taking it for a drive.

Can coil packs be intermittent?

Car has done 9000 miles, but its been doing it since about 5000.

Oh and I can get a combination of fault lights on the dash, the most frequent being the epc, esp and low tyre pressure light combined, but the car wont always limit the revs with these lights on display, and when the epc light goes away, the other two will remain on and the epc will be disabled until I restart the car.

Think this will probably be a job for Jkm or AMD me thinks.

It has hpfp internals, blueflame dp, revo stage 2 plus and itg intake.

The car has done it with mods and without any mods though.

Think im gonna change the coil packs unless someone has a good reason why it would be unlikely to be that, just its sorta odd for the coil packs to be intermittent, and surely if it was them one of the pack would have given up ghost by now?

id change them, you've done the plugs, so take the hole spark equation out.

have you done your PCV. not sure if that could be at fault. If your manifold take off isnt tight it could cause fluctuations etc.

I know my car isn't the same (Golf 1.4 FSI MK5) but my car didn't start up from warm sometimes, turned out to be a temperature sender. The problem hasn't occured since. Maybe worth a try.

pcv catch can? No pcv mods for me so far.

Could be route to look down, tbh if the coil packs dont do it, I think it will be time to let JKM or AMD have a go.

I mean your std one could have gone. they are a known weak point. is there someone elses oem Pcv that you could take off temporarily to have a go with maybe. or perhaps get to the catch can mod to elliminate it altogether

Could borrow cuprak1's pcv I suppose. Think I need to read up on pcv symptoms.

my money is on possibly the cam follower which could of worn out, even more so after the hpfp was done.

What oil do you have again?

I might get the catch can soon so we can swap my PCV onto yours?

have to let me take a look but its always dark wen we meet up lol

first check is get the actual fault codes and do a web search /ross tech wiki.
You may have more than one issue.

I'd always be tempted to suggest flashing back to stock , and even removing modifications to get to a known working state before tuning....

engine shaking etc sounds like coilpacks, can swap between cylinders and see if misfire is in same cylinder or not.

starting sounds like fuel pressure , be it from the low pressure side (in tank pump / filter etc) or high pressure side (rail, injectors, sensors) (you can log this via vagcom , and see how it drops once the engines turned off)

multiple dash lights can often be a sign of low voltage in the entire system, so id want to check your battery voltage under load ...

you couldnt be in better hands than JKM  :happy2:

You seem to know your stuff, as alot of your suggested ideas on the issues correspond with what was flagged up on VAG COM.

The first time I had it VAG COM'd when it was really bad I got 12 fault codes

Have got em saved so will post em up tomorrow or so. However had the car scanned about a week ago and nothing of much interest was flagged up, but still need to get DanGB to email them over.

Wayne did dan email you the fault codes at all? Dont think the cam follower is a issue, plus AMD surely would have said something if mine was worn, plus the mileage on mine is a bit low for a worn cam follower, as I was experiencing these issues at about 5-6k in.

DAMN, get those logs off to revo mate!  they might be able to help, after all its revo code which could be a contributing factor.

you couldnt be in better hands than JKM  :happy2:

.... x 2

Also JKM are a Revo dealer. They know much more about the 2.0T FSI than most.

They sorted my boost leak problem and they sorted illyun's very complicated problems, plus many many more 2.0T FSI cars.
