Thermostat

I know my engine has the common thing about the main thermostat needed to be changed but how do I know if it's the main one or the second one my car reached 70 fine on short journeys has to be driven quite a while longer to get to 90 but like most ppl when costing etc it drops down

GTIEagles:
I think if the inline thermostat has gone it will eventually reach 90 degrees but very slowly and it should stay there.

But if the main thermostat has gone it may or may not reach 90 degrees and the temparature will definately drop when coasting.

So it sounds like your main thermostat has gone.

Well it gets to 90 after a while doesn't drop massively tho I'm sure there was a thread I see on here the other week explaining that you can use the climate controls to work out temperatures etc I don't wanna have to pay out for the main one when it might not be

GTIEagles:
Try the inline first and if that doesn't do it, it's definately your main. The inline shouldn't take too long to do looking at the guides but the main looks to be a right PITA so probably best left to a garage.

Worth trying inline first as its much cheaper. The inline cured my slow warm up, but the temp was still going up and down after it reached 90. I had to get the main one done to cure this but was quite expensive though at three hours labour.
