Diesel sounding GTI FSI-T Mk5 :(

May have read this wrong but you can probably listen to it not on axle stands to see if it's coming from the bottom, but if you do get it on stands then you'll be able to check for physical play in the sprocket as well

I think you will need to drop the sump to see the sprocket,I know the timing belt has to come of to remove the chain drive so I guess its behind the belt cover it least
