EGR valve/ Glo-plugs

(1/5) > >>

Bazman:
Hi there,

I have a golf mk 5 GT TDI.

I recently had the engine warming light come on and the message about emissions workshop.
Now the mechanic has had a look and says it needs a new EGR valve and glow-plugs which looks like it's gonna cost circa £700 all in!

Thing is the car runs 100% fine there are no symptoms what so ever. (Well there is one actually: after start up on a very cold day there is a very faint wiff of exhaust fumes right after start up but it disappears almost immediately and is only in sub-zero conditions.)

£700 seems a lot to repair a car that is running perfectly?

From the above it seems that the EGR valve is not critical, and as I am not experiencing any problems so I don't need to delete pipe either.

Can I just leave the EGR in place?
If so should I have anything else done like have it mapped out of the engine control system?

TBH the glow plugs appear to be working fine too, but that is a secondary issue cost wise.

Thanks Baz

Andy:
My egr is still in place but been mapped out and also the egr cooler removed

Bazman:
Thanks Maxitrol,

Is is strictly necessary to remove the EGR cooler? Can I just map EGR out and leave everything in placve?
How much was the ECR cooler removal?

Like I say car is completely symptom free so really don't inclined to spend huge amounts.

Matto:
Do you know what faults you were getting? ASV's are quite a common failure also.

OSB:
The ERG went on my wifes mk6 TDI - lots of lights and went into limp mode. You'll know when it happens!
Had to be fixed quick and went VW (local indys were not really interested) cost £1600.... Ouch!
