Title: My first ED30 tornado red
Post by: howie1987 on September 30, 2015, 12:30:10 am
Been on here a while and never got round to a build thread on my old car. this won't be a build thread as such as most of what i would do has been done.

Anyway on sunday morning set off on a 4 hour trip from scotland down to halifax to buy ed30sam123 car, was a cracking day sun was out. anyway got there a bit late after being lost in the countryside.

Anyway got there after seeing sam waving us down as we were still lost so that was a bit of luck. I'm pretty sure he couldn't understand our thick scottish accents haha, anyway he couldn't of been nicer, was great dealing with you.

So off we set and with me never being in a dsg before, i ended up trying to push the clutch that wasn't there and i tested the brakes and done an emergency stop. poor women behind me nearly went in to the back of me. pulled out her way and i won't repeat what she shouted haha. my head just went down and accepted her abuse. then we got to a pub for some food and every stop on the way up the road i was running for the toilet, no offence to anyone in burnley but the food wasn't up to much.

Car drives great and the DSG sounds great on gear change. still getting use to it so not really wanting to have to much fun yet.

Anyway on to the car and my plans

Here's how it came:

Factory fitted extras
DSG
Xenons
Privacy glass – tinted rear side and rear windows
Armrest with cup holder cover and rear air vents
RCD500 6 disc cd changer with 10 speakers
Lux Pack – Electric folding mirrors with puddle lights and mirror dip on reverse
Ipod preparation in armrest
Cruise control
Highline dash
MFSW – steering wheel buttons
RNS510 sat nav
Bluetooth with voice dialling.
Genuine Mk6 reverse camera integrated into rear badge
Audi S3 jacking points
Brushed aluminium ash tray cover
Puddle lights in door cards
Golf Mk6 Blue motion Engine Undertray

Other mods
Polar FIS
Full Polybush Kit
H&R 28/24 ARB kit
15mm rear spacers
cold air induction kit
S3 brakes
Autotech HPFP
Stage 2+ remap from rtech

Here's some pics i stole from sam.

Here's my other gti which has still to be sold.

Things on my list:

get the resonated milltek turboback with sportscat on. which went on tonight, its too quiet so am looking for a non res mid section now.

Changed the radio player surround for carbon effect dipped on. not sure i like it might change it.

Got some black oz ultraleggera and 4 new michelin pilot sport 3 tyres to go on thursday.

Fit the H&R springs sam gave me.

Climair wind deflectors.

Door sill guards.

Thinking of puting a THS intercooler on it but its just a maybe. pending if my car sells with mods on it, if not i will put it back to standard and use the THS.

Things in the future:
r32 style rear bumper and buy a new r32 exhaust system maybe go BCS.
Cam follower and timing belt and waterpump and general services etc but not needing done right now. car has been well looked after as you probably all know from previous thread.

Here's a pic of the dash

think it needs some springs now. got some h&r but 30mm is to low for these speedbumps about here.

Your new ED30 looks good - seen this pass through a number of owners, and it has always been well cherished! You've added my favourite set of non OEM alloys too. I know from experience they're so lightweight!

In terms of lowering springs - I was the same, I didn't want a very low riding car, just a little something to reduce the wheel arch gap. I bought VWR Springs which give only 20mm lowering.

yeah loads of receipts etc from past owners. can tell its been looked well after, inside feels like new.

yeah i love the wheels but every single person that has commented saying the other wheels i took off look better lol. i prefer the oz ones so thats what counts.

20mm would be ideal as i has the other gti lowerd 20mm and made it over the speedbumps.

Great example you've got there. Very well equipped. Congrats!

I love your OZ, obviously since I have them too, but I just don't like them in black (any black wheel really). You might consider painting them antracite like Matte Graphite Silver that OZ sells too. Just a suggestion, of course.

Am not to keen on silver. maybe anthracite later on but will leave them just now. I've always been a sucker for black wheels though lol.

OZ calls anthracite of Matte Graphite Silver. It's the colour of my wheels.

Good work!  The blue sticker from the wind deflectors is easily removed. I used a little rubbing alcohol to remove the adhesive after pealing it off.

Really nice example!

Fitted some of mandys paddle shifts today. they look good and great quality, but not sure they suit the steering wheel lol.

non res milltek mid section came to swap with my resonated one. think i've changed my mind though.

Front brake pads were squeeking a bit and a bit low so just got them changed for some pagid pads which will do me for what i need them for.

In the next months or 2 i think am going to change the rear bumper for an r32 one and change the milltek backbox. and some 20mm lowering springs probably eibach springs. then that will be about it.

next year its due the cambelt and waterpump change. i wanted to change the cam follower just now, so i might just get the rest done while its in.

Nige can sell you the rear section of the R32 exhaust or the complete system if you wish to. He's the owner of BCS Powervalve company (if I'm not mistaken). Great quality products, better than Milltek from what everyone says. My mechanic didn't know BCS and he loved it when he saw the TBE on my Ed. 30. The welds and the fitment are spot on. :happy2:

I didn't even click on when i seen the bcs in the name.

yeah i've heard bcs are great. i already have a milltek system so probably wouldn't change the full system anytime soon. can i mate a bcs backbox to a miltek section. sure nige can tell me lol.

Thats really handy then i didn't really know where to start with it.

I'm sure Nige can sort you out. BCS exhausts are 3'' all the way and for what I know, Milltek are 2,75'' after the cat. Your system might need an adaptor but should be easy to arrange.

Small update. Sorry for the dirty car.

Manged to get the eibach springs on. Sits alot better now and not like a jeep. I know people aren't a fan of the progressive springs but i think the H&R springs are just a tad to low for the speed bumps about here.

I did plan on cleaning and polishing  it today but didn't get a chance.

I also managed to swap my milltek resnated mid section out for the non res. What a difference it pops and burbles and its easy to live with aswell, not to loud and droney.

Will get better pics once its cleaned and polished tomorrow.

It was also in getting front wishbone bushes replaces with polybush. It needed a track rod end aswell and then it passed its MOT.

Next thing on the cards....timing belt and waterpump. Got a dv rev g and pvc to go in aswell just as peice of mind. Oil filter and oil change aswell and also a new battery. Oil etc wasn't needed as sam had done all that and it was all receipted and stamped by vw but i just want to do it anyway. Tbh i didn't need to do much as sam and previous owners have kepted it all to a high standard.

Thanks mate. Yeah defo sit better now lol.

They do seem a bit softer than i expected. But i wouldn't say its bouncey. For day to day use it actually feels better i think but i haven't really drove it alot since i put the springs on.

I use to have the same springs on my old type r and i liked them on that so i guess its going to be a similar feel.

And I think mk6 climatronic controls would look good in your interior and finish the dash off nicely :)

Thanks mate. You didn't see it that morning it was coverd in burd sh*te. Had to wipe it off the paint work would of been quicker washing it lol

Yeah i had thought about that. I had the carbon dipped dash from my old gti so just swaped that before i sold it. So not that botherd about that.

I have a few plans for through out the year. Probably the mk6 dash as you mentioned as it does look alot nicer. And maybe the mk6 steering wheel but it is a bit pricey lol.

I got the door sills from ebay mate.actually really good quality think they were £20.

Yeah it probably isn't worth the money changing steering wheel. Mk5 one isn't that bad.

Feel like i've lost my arm.

Thats the car been put on a truck and is heading to nottingham to get the mechatronics fixed.

While its in i'm getting them to do a few other things.

Timing belt and waterpump.
Cam follower.
Pvc valve.
Diverter valve rev g.
Brake fluid change.
Replace rear brake dust covers.
Check sticky front brake caliper.

I also have it booked in on the 25th at volkswagen for a minor service. ie oil change and filter.

Paying my tax bill and road tax and car insurance for the year am skint lol. after this i think that will all be done till the summer.

She has had everything done i mentioned in one of my previous posts so she should be bang on now.

So actually got the car back tonight, bit later than i expected but nevermind.

Took her out for a 2 hour test drive. what a difference. i can actually pull away without looking like a twat stalling my car.

Gear changes seem to be smoother aswell and it comes down the gears quicker but this is maybe just me lol.

Big thanks to slaters garage in nottingham they have been great and must of been fed up with me on the phone constantly.

Now got another dilema....

I need the dsg mapped again and am booked in at rtech on the 18th of march. but there is a place 20min from me that does the revo maps and as much as rtech are the best from what i read. am talking myself out of the 6hour drive to rtech at 3am. not sure what to do.

I was reading about the revo sps controller aswell, and that sounds appealing with the map changes. as i do some motorway miles. also the anti theft thing aswell sounds good.

Got a peron intercooler on its way and a new milltek backbox to go on. it already has a milltek but i lost a tailpipe and it being a bit old my impulse buying took over.

EDIT... Ditched the revo idea rtech here we come on the 1st of april at 12 oclock.

Hi mate. i got it from jussa on here. i wasn't aware of revised ic but from what i've heard seen these are better than ths which i had before and was happy so aslong as its good for what i need it for.

jussa sounds like he has a mega build on the go hence him selling but his was good for over 400bhp. so not sure what hes going for now.

I take it your looking for an intercooler lol?

Yeah i have thought about the open fog grills. its on my list of impulse buys haha.

Another update...

Thought the thermostat was done but it turned out to be the fans.

Things i fitted.
front two vw radiator fans.
peron intercooler. (finally got it on)
vw main thermostat.
vw coolant temp sensor.
Front open fog inserts "thanks to Mitch h puting it in my head haha"

Moved R-tech back to the 8th of april for some tweeks, due to the fans packing in.

Anyone need an s3 alloy intercooler give me a shout. or a used vw condesner.

On my way back from r-tech half way home 3 hour to go. (mate is driving)

So got the dsg sorted out and mapped.

Map on the car got tweaked also. going from s3 ic to the peron ic.

No massive gains but i knew not to expect much, and the main thing was to get the dsg, with the new mechatronics mapped.

It does feel alot more responsive and i'm happy/very tired lol.

I honestly don't have a clue.

One thing he mentioned was the peron intercooler being painted black. if it wasn't painted black it would be better. and the 200cell sportscat was restricting it aswell. but for mot purposes and it keeps the noise down a bit its not worth the hassle of removing it.

The black paint in the IC works as a coat so the heat transference between air and aluminium has an additional barrier.

I'd still love that mine was making the same sort of output. That should be enough for a spirited drive. :happy2:

Am not quite sure what he was meaning with the black paint. am scottish so the accents were a bit of a barrier haha.

Yeah thats plenty for me anyway. i wasn't really chasing numbers anyway just glad the dsg is finally sorted.

Started getting loads of viberation through the steering when braking the lastweek and got worse yesterday. would you think thats the brake discs? orderd some anyway. i'll need to check it out but was just glad to get home after a 14hour round trip thanks to manchester rush hour.

Think i might have a sticky caliper aswell.

Yeah, most likely a warped disc. If you have R32/S3/TTS calipers try the Brembo Sport 340 mm discs.

Here's a youtube explaining the problem with black painted IC:

Yeah their s3 brakes. i have already orderd some ebc grooved 345mm. i just read the 340mm are better in another thread aswell, knew i should of waited will try and cancel.

Well if i ever start chasing numbers i will need to paint strip the ic .

Would of thought they would of researched before actually painting or have known this.

The ~2 kg difference in the weight of each disc is noticeable, not much but it's noticeable. The brake power is the same, I think. I replaced my 345 mm ATE discs with the Brembo Sport 340 mm in my GT Sport, it's my personal experience.

If you have a sticky piston the repair kit for the calipers isn't that expensive, just new pistons would be more dear.

Yeah loosing every bit of weight counts. i've emailed them to cancel. they are also a cheaper than the one's i bought which is a bonus. i think i'll try the 340mm brembos out.

Yeah i will get my caliper checked but it always squeeks at low speed when am not braking. the refurb kit won't do it any harm either way. cheers mate you have gave me loads of advice helped me out loads tbh.

Car's looking great - very envious of that power - must get mine mapped! Can't believe I've resisted so long...

I can well recommend the Brembo Sport 340 mm discs too - bought a set for mine when doing the R32/S3 front brake conversion, and the ones I bought have a very good paint coating on the edges of the disc and the hub, so are still looking sharp after 8 months. I know it's aesthetic, but I just can't stand rusty brake discs! Bought mine from Opie oils on here, who also gave a forum discount

It's just a coating. The pads will remove it and the metal will show. At least the rest of the disc will be a bit more rust resistant.

I did get to test the brakes yesterday. not paying attention and nearly going through a red light, in the rain and still stopped me pretty quick and i was actually suprised the abs didn't need to get used.(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20160505%2F39e32b0488b72978e89f232accee90fc.jpg&hash=68fb1a87b9ffbf0d024725ed6a02780fdbc5fa75)

Seen these mirror caps and impulse shopping took over  never really been in to carbon mirrors but i think they look no bad.

Just noticed a massive chunk out my door aswell. pretty annoyed but am going to get it resprayed at the end if the year anyway, as the stone chips on the front are pretty bad and annoys the hell out of me when am polishing/waxing her.

If that's the only mark on door I would just touch it up mate!
Unless your getting wings painted when you do front end the they might aswell blend it in a little further down the door and cover the chip

The red is really bad for showing stonechips. My dad just bought a red ed30 and it looked awful. Just had front end respray and much better. It's almost as bad as my black car for showing imperfections!

My plan was to just get the front end painted and roof. but being red i just thought am aswell getting it all painted due to needing to blend it, but yeah i could save money and just see what the painter thinks. my mate knows him well so see what he says.

Yeah its bloody annoying. i don't think mine are that bad but i know they're there so it annoys me.

Someone asked me if i had got it resprayed the other day, so my waxing skills must not be to bad

Check the dust cover behind the disc and see if it's catching or loose. Mine did this on the back and it had rusted on the bolt holes and became loose.

Hope this solves it.

Had the full front end painted and got rid of the stone chips. Both wheel arches aswell as they were starting to rust. Nice job but my pics are crap i was in a rush lol.

Also had 2 new rack ends and fully tracked finally sorted. And a new battery.

Small update.

Didn't really need it but the service was due.

So usual got changed oil and all filters including fuel filter.

Cam follower which the old one had hardly any wear. Dv and pcv also got done.

Also got some subframe spacer kit fitted finally.

I was kind of reluctant but i took it to a good indy i've been using for years which are great but i lost the FVWSH. I don't trust the stealers and they are all arnold clark about here, so no chance i was giving them the car.

Everything i planned on doing to the car is done now so getting bored  itching to do somthing with it lol.

Rs3 is shouting my name

Small update.

Had a random code come on in the ecu and epc light was on. So rtech wanted me to send it down and i got it back and put it back in and now the traction control light is on.

Its somthing to do with mechatronics map and the map on my ecu not 100% sure what, but speaking to niki at rtech he knew what it needed so i need to go the 12hour round trip down again and stay the night.

So while i'm down going to get the walnut carbon cleaning and oil pickup done and the runner flap delete. Also going to try get a day at donnington race track while we're down (not in the ed30).

Plans to sell it were flung out the window anyway maybe next year.

Doesn't make sense after all the paint job and other work i've had done to then sell up.So i'll enjoy it for this year and see what happens.

Made it to rtech on tuesday morning left at 4am and then took a trip into london and stayed the night. Never do that again its chaos haha.

Anyway rtech sorted everything out.

They changed my spark plugs, fitted the dv+, carbon and injector clean, fitted rs4 pressure valve.
