Really good to see so many of you all again, hopefully the next meet we all attend won't be as cold!.
And a big thanks to those of you made generous donations to the forum :drinking:

I personally found it pretty tuff getting the power down at the start, a couple of times I just spun and got terrible starts :ashamed:
To much rev as not thatfamiliar with launch control and it showed. That 14.1 I got I used the paddles in m mode.

Here's my result. Sh!t 60 ft as I can't seem to launch as well as Vtec (Ben). Best things are I achieved my target of under 14 seconds and over 110mph terminal speed. Also went up against Rupo off R32oc and nailed him :P

13.6 @ 110.75 mph with a 2.58 second 60 foot time in the wet is mighty impressive in my book :happy2:

got my burger after 20 mins!! :signLOL: 14.8 and 14.9 for the little french monkey. only did two runs!! needs to be a track day or airfield day next, straight lines sucks!!! :fighting:

Great day guys, really good to meet loads of new faces, pleased with Phylis's performance, raced 2 stage 2+ Ed30's (1 manual and 1 dsg)and lost down the quarter miles by only .1 of a second. Not bad for Mr Standard :happy2:.
Seemed the lower the torque gave a better pickup from the start. Track surface very slippy : :grin:

The Stag race was called off due to heavy snow showers closed the Pod strip as we were both on the start line!!!

How the Fook does that VTec fella get down there so fast it's unbelievable :chicken: Run after run he started perfect. :fighting:
StevePG needs new oil in his DSG he went down the strip that many times. :grin:
JPC knows how to get his soot chucker off the line it would be interesting seeing him in a ED 30. :evilgrin:
And mr wheelmans times were amazing for a standard GTI. :chicken:
I also saw Billy boy and John_O get beat by a man walking his dog. :signLOL: hope your car gets sorted Billy :wink:
All in all a great day shame about the weather it was fooking freezing. :scared:

Really good to meet you all, some for the first time, and others again.
Had a great day! Wish I'd stayed at the Pod longer, as it brightened up after that first batch of mild snow!
I think I'm addicted to the drag strip now though, what a rush when you're at that start line waiting for the lights to change!
Shame about the traction problems today, think the tarmac was just too cold, and that red diesel stuff that the marshalls were laying down to allow for burnouts just wasn't evaporating - thereby making the first 60ft pretty slippery!

Good day today! You all left a bit early though!..
Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet all you guys, but I did get a chance to watch almost all of the cars run which was cool! :smiley:
I had 4 runs over the course of the day, had a few problems with the DSG not allowing me to engage the launch control after the burnout, the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree lol..
Anyways, 3 out of my 4 runs I had a 2.32 / 2.38 / 2.37 60ft time with the launch control..
Bloody typical but my best time of the day I had to set off without the launch control, and the results were as follows..
60ft 2.50
1/8 mile 8.72 @ 92.45 mph
1/4 mile 12.98 @ 118.60 mph
Pretty pleased with the results, especially the 1/4 mile trap speed..
As far as I know this could be the fastest time recorded for a UK MK5 GTI? I may be wrong though..
Anyways, mega day (shame about the weather) but we should definitely do it again soon!! Next time, 100kg+ out of the car and another 100bhp I think! :laugh: :happy2:

It was good watching you against Ben. on the 3 runs i saw of yours it looked like your best start. Both of your cars nailed the start and you looked to be just in front by the 60 foot and then easily pulled away there after. :happy2:
PS i could not believe how your car compared to the black S3 hardly anything in it from start to finish. :driver:

Anyway, great day chaps and good to see such a big turn out especially on the strip, it's addictive isn't it? :jumping: Makes for a lot better day when the weather is a the right side of freezing though..
There was some really nnice motors there today (especially the vags obviously :happy2:) and some seriously quick ones too..
No improvement on my PB time, but did improve somewhat on my terminal speed and finished off with a best of..

12.9 @ 118mph with a damp start is a pretty amazing time and trap speed. What has been taken out the car so far with regard to weight saving? Having read the build thread it is a Revo Stage 2+ car, right?
Pretty impressive terminal for you too Ben. Reckon this is down to colder/denser air compared to your 5mph slower terminal speed from a previous effort?

Oh, yes!! Absloutely brand new, from a written off S3, that was rolled by it owner after 800miles, F+R Calipers, Discs, all 4 hubs. all hoses, all bolts, 2 front ball joints, all 4 stone guards for Cough** £420 Cough** The discs are brand new, no lips at all, the rears still have the circular honing marks on them. One of the stone guards lip is a bit bent, but none to bad. One of the front calipers edges is a bit sccuffed, where is has been lying on its face.
Even got the S3 Metal badge thingys.
Well happy!
Oh got all 4 ABS sensors as well!

12.9 @ 118mph with a damp start is a pretty amazing time and trap speed. What has been taken out the car so far with regard to weight saving? Having read the build thread it is a Revo Stage 2+ car, right?
Yeah the car is Revo stage 2+, but with ALL bolt on's too.. Im fairly confident that I have about 95% of the K04's capability unlocked, im hoping for another little bit of power and torque from some extra bits that Ill be sorting out soon..

15 at 101mph just could not hook up and was spinning in 3rd gear so was backing off the gas and was trying not to be too hard on the clutch :sad:

Hmm, yeah I like there stuff.. Its a little pricey though haha..
I really want to stick a set of 18x9's on the car and run 255/35/18's, but it would involve a lot of work! And im not exactly sure how much benefit I would feel on the road day to day..

Bit guttedwith my runs actually - was going there expecting mid 14's - just couldn't breach the 15 sec mark - gutted - had the usual Bluefin 6.5k misfire despite trying to short shift from 1st to 2nd ... I dunno ... quite gutted my best times :-

Also Nadine, my better half had two runs at the end of the day ... by the time you all left 15 mins later track opened and away to go. Here are her best times :-

Just talking here at home ... forgot - I had a full coolbox, all detailing stuff (huge box), a quilt, pillows, camera bags my works gear - full tank of gas - suppose that has to be about 100kg !!! That could easily account for .5 second - easily ....

Had a look on SCN and see an otherwise standard Leon Cupra TFSi with a Revo test map topped 110mph too :surprised:
Not doubting any figures at all, but the terminal speeds seem quite high on all the cars today compared to what the same cars were getting last year with much the same modifications.
Ben - Where did your additional 5mph terminal speed come from mate? Also, how did the Meganes, VXR's, ST's etc get on?
Must try losing weight next time I go to the 1/4 mile :smiley:

May have something to do wih the fact that it was 0 degrees C = dense air = more power = lower time but also lower traction & cold tyres

It's only 3.7mph actually.. :wink: :grin: But to be fair, I do think that the right lane may of had calabration errors on the speeds, as it was generally 2-3mph more that my left lane runs. Noticed it with one of Jonny's runs as well too (he did a 115mph in the left lane). Also the right lane did spaz out a couple of times (Luca ran a 131mph and I saw a VXR get 118mph too, even though it ran 103mph on others).. Just an observation, but could be wrong.. :confused:
Did get a 109mph in the left lane though, so still an improvement either way. :smiley:

Pretty happy with the results as there is loads of room for improvement in the 60ft and the mph indicates the car is making good power.
With a warmer day i could get the 60ft to 2.2-2.3 so should break into the 13's

Yup.. I know exactly what happenned and why... During the S3 Intercooler install, my brother-in-law removed the coolant hose next to the air intake by mistake. We reclamped it but had to pull it slightly so reconnect it. What happenned was that unbeknown to us, the hose when pulled was rubbing slightly against the radiator fans and over the next week was gradually cut away until it burst on my run today :sad:

Not too much of a problem in that its only a hose replacement thats needed, but as I'm getting an oil/filter change and spark plugs this week at VW, so may as well get the Master Tech to take a look - he knows what he's doing as he's an enthusiast and built his own Mk2 1.8T conversion. I am thinking that the hose may have been secured by clamps which may have come off.

arh, but from a day to day LEGAL usage on the public highways, theres not much in it unless you go into high speed, then the ed30 is a true weapon.Convert the torque into grip and an old mans auto box :signLOL:, you have a VERY quick car!
Goes to show all that power is great if you can control the traction.
Have to say nathan, your car stood out for me at the weekend. She looked fantastic mate, and you should be proud of what youve done to her . Big :happy2: from me.
Hurdy your car is just insanily quick!, and Ben what is your secret!!!!!. I was tempted to ask Ben if we had time to go down the strip in my car to see if its driver skill that he does soo well or is it his car. Perhaps may be a good test nxt time out?.

Ben - Where did your additional 5mph terminal speed come from mate?
It's only 3.7mph actually.. :wink: :grin: But to be fair, I do think that the right lane may of had calabration errors on the speeds, as it was generally 2-3mph more that my left lane runs. Noticed it with one of Jonny's runs as well too (he did a 115mph in the left lane). Also the right lane did spaz out a couple of times (Luca ran a 131mph and I saw a VXR get 118mph too, even though it ran 103mph on others).. Just an observation, but could be wrong.. :confused:
Did get a 109mph in the left lane though, so still an improvement either way. :smiley:
For me the speeds (and times) were very consistent between lanes..
I did my first two runs in the right hand lane, and saw..
119.54 MPH
118.30 MPH
Then my second two in the left hand lane..
118.60 MPH
115.76 MPH (this was because I had the problem with the launch AGAIN!!! As a result I was just over 3mph down at the 1/8th mile, so again would have been a 118 MPH run arrgh..)
Also, my speedo was reading over just over 130mph lol..

New on here and i dont own a Mk5,but was up at pod how cold?!!There were some lovley Mk5's up there. I liked the white one with alcons and TD prorace wheels very smart car and quick to :happy2:.
Anyway i wanted peoples opions on if they thought the right lane was trapping fast?

Yeah, my car picked up 27MPH from the 1/8th to the 1/4..
I raced Andy in his GT3071R turbo 8P S3 (running around 450hp), he got a better launch but I pulled on him throughout and ended up with a 5MPH higher trap speed..
Remember that Santa Pod is a FIA European Drag racing venue, the times and speeds are not an estimation. I feel a hell of a lot more comfortable quoting figures from Santa pod than I would from GTI International.. Im sure most would feel the same way..

The S3 trapped at 114.58MPH on his 12.7 run, I was next to him on that run, and I trapped 119.54, as I said I was pulling on him like mad at the end of the run..
Why? Do the figures seem to high to be true??
There was a fair few GTI's there on the day with a real mix of modifications, gives a good idea of what was achievable..

Think if you look at my results yours seem very believable, guess your running around 370 - 400hp? With the ambient temps being so low the cars were definitely making good power, but the starts were a bit on the slow side because of traction issues..
As I said, I can only go off my 4 runs, 2 in the left, 2 in the right, and to me they all seemed perfect..

Yep i reckon 370plus but is'nt that a big trap for that.I dynoed in the summer but it had been all day on the dyno mapping and did 355ish on a DD roller.Since then i have started running meth injection thats allowed an extra 4 degrees of ignition on boost!It felt strong up top yesterday but.....The other thing is i have no idea what it weights but would guess 1320-1360kg. Whatever i will take it, and claim bragging rights lol.

....I love watching it but have no plans to ever run. I used to do amateur Time Trials (bicycle) and so I'm very familiar with the bug! It's not actually all about beating everyone else but more about constantly trying to improve your own PB (Personal Best) time. This thread with the wonderful enthusiasm of previously virgin dragstrippers is absolute proof of how the addiction gets hold of you!!
Sorry I had to leave without saying a proper farewell to many and to miss the group pic.
Should all be much easier in better weather.

Also Nadine, my better half had two runs at the end of the day ... by the time you all left 15 mins later track opened and away to go. Here are her best times :-

NOT BAD AT ALL considering Nadine has never been near a track, never had a performance car etc etc - well chuffed fro her - her time sheets are her pride and joy at the moment !!!

Im really not sure about the power, if im totally honest then I think it should have around 370+hp.. As cars with much less had achieved around 360bhp.. But it could be more, I really dont know, it would be interesting having a figure for the car, but im scared to death of posting it anywhere as your inevitably going to get shot down for crazy claims etc etc..
Thats why I thought the 1/4 mile testing would be a better way of showing the cars potential, and to be honest, I was shocked with the trap speeds, especially when you look at this..
This is the 1/4 mile leader board for 2.0T FSI cars.. It shows the car, 'box type, and turbo.. Most of there cars were ran in hot weather on drag radials..

Yes, indeed, she just wanted to keep going, with the EMS light flashing though thought it wasn't the best idea in the world. Bit annoyed with my times ... phonecall to superchips will be pending - been a lazy bugger and only just got up - so will get on the phone in the next 1 mins. Great to meet you at last Robin :happy2: . I used due do the strip in international every year in my Mk1 16v - which I may add is doing better times than my alleged 300bhp ED30 ....

I can't believe how flat that appears, no digging its backside in and lifting the front. Did you do anything in particular, or is it all talent & those fancy engine mounts?
Haha.. The rear is quite stiff, and I have about 10mm of rake in the car.. Also the solid lower mount means that there is almost no movement in the engine and gearbox, which helps traction etc..
Also modulating the power in 1st, once it was in 2nd I had enough traction to use all of the power.. Also the DSG makes for a very efficient smooth gear change..

Neil, That 2.35 second to 60' is a good indicator of how the Quaife helps out too. A lot of other cars couldn't get anywhere near that (including me!) :signLOL:
I'd like to know what Illyun got for his 60' time too as he also has a Quaife. Illyun also managed a 113.5mph terminal trap so is also making good power. :happy2: With his quaife and the power he has he should really be down in the low 13's.

Think this was the best of my day, had better reaction times, trap speeds and 60ft just couldn't put them altogether on the same run.
Think I had about 10 runs but after the snow with less cars there its easy to keep going round, I went up against the white Revo TT 4 times :embarrassed:

Apparantly that silver Scirocco that was there yesterday ran a 14.2 and it's STANADARD!!! :surprised:
i ran against it aswell, he got ahead at the start by 0.18 of a second reaction, and i finished same distance behind him. i think it was a dsg aswell??,but yes i couldnt make up the ground i lost on him.
We were pretty close other all sections of the quarter mile.

Sounds like any forthcoming "hot" Scirocco is going to be a seriously quick car then, if the standard is anything to go by!

Having read all the above, I am really unsure what to think about some of the results.
To put it in perspective, a stage 2+ TFSi Cupra with a semi reasonable start managed 13.6 @ 109.8mph at Crail and that is a strip which everyone claims unusually high terminal speeds, yet at the pod, a stage 0.75 Cupra (Revo trial map) managed over 110mph terminal speed :confused:
Also, despite non perfect starting conditions loads of other cars that are running 30bhp less than the stage 2+ Cupra manage to match the 1/4 mile time despite having slower 60 foot times :confused:

Mine is Revo Stage 2, Milltek TBE and ITG Panel. Think Neil's is AMD Stage 1 and Milltek TBE AFAIK. Quality vid that though mate, need to get me one of those cams.. :happy2:

Hi guys nice to see your cars going up the strip! Didnt get a chance to come over and say hi as some of you will have noticed, I was taking the scirocco up quite frequently :) (15 times in the end)
I was sharing the car with my cousin that day which is who Phil came up against, I'm nagging to get the other slips off him at the mo as I havent gotten to look at my 14.2 properly (Up against the pale blue mini)

Someone told me about the group photo so I turned the car around and started driving towards the area I thought the group photo would be at... then I got distracted as cars started lining up for the strip and I thought its back on! So group photo vs going down the strip? Sorry guys, no contest :evilgrin: :evilgrin: :evilgrin: But then I was stuck in the bl00dy queue for 40 minutes :sad:
BTW where did everyone go? I know some of you guys came from far away and I asked JonnyC and was surprised too that more didn't stay on. Luca came back though :happy2: Sorry... rambling on there. This is meant to be a reply to times etc... We only got one run each before the pipe split but decided to initially try different methods down the strip to see what worked best.
Technique 1: Just use launch control and mode S all the way. No burnout.
My wife's cousin tried this first and got the best result. I'm sure he could have got a better time with a bit more practice but it wasn't to be :sad: His times were:

Technique 2: My brother-in-law used the manual paddle shifts from start to finish - no launch control. I think Hurdy tried this or the method below to good effect at GTI International last year... however, we didn't get good results using the paddle shift although this may be due to the driver as his take off was better than the one above, but then for some inexplicable reason he seems to have slowed down later on between 330ft and 1/8 ET.

Technique 3: Use launch control and then change gears manually. Sounds good in practice but I messed up my burnout and only got my front wheels wet which caused wheel hop and loss of traction initially where I lost a whole second. I think with a few more runs we could have got our 1/4 mile time down to below 13.50s but i'll leave that for the 14th March when the car has been sorted.
I was also meant to have my black BBS CHs on with new Michelin PS2s but A1 Wheels hadn't finished with them... so I was using Hurdy's old Contis - a bit worn upfront with about 1mm left at most :laugh: I blame the Revo Stage 2 prior to the Quaife being fitted. Next time I'll have light alloys with semi-slicks. :evilgrin: :evilgrin: :evilgrin: VWR engine mount to stop the wheel hop and will be looking to lighten the car as much as possible. :happy2: I'm sure I can get a very low 13 or maybe even under 13 by doing that.

I had Stage 2+ Revo put on by Northampton Motorsport on Saturday but they couldn't fit in a rolling road. Nice guys, but not VAG specialists by any stretch. I'm not sure what the car is running but tbh it doesn't seem any faster than at stage 2 revo - maybe because the torque is being limited as I have a DSG car. I will be getting it to JKM next week for a full diagnostic and set-up.

convoy down was bloody good, i think there was about 10 of us, but i got held up at the toll so ended up doing WARP speed to catch up with billyboy :laugh:

No, that was as per my instructions as I don't want to work the turbo at 100% all the time - only at events like the pod. I had my Select Plus in the boot but forgot to change the boost to 8/9 when I left in the morning :ashamed: Plus I wasn't 100% confident that past putting the map on my car, that Northampton Motorsport knew what they were doing with the car as they don't work on GTI/Edition 30s that much by their own admission, so thats also why I wanted a low boost just in case :grin: :grin: :grin:
I just thought it would give me a bit of a power boost for Santa Pod, but I am going to JKM to have the car set-up properly. BTW Northampton Motorsport do have a good reputation so this is not a direct criticism of them, but they aren't experienced with the Mk5 Golf platform.

The Pro race 1.2's are roughly 4kg's lighter than the OEM wheels each, so 16kg's in total. The theory is that rotational mass is equal to 4x that of static weight loss. Which would mean that changing the wheels alone should be equivalent to shedding 64kgs off a standard Golf GTI.
Say on a Golf Gti with 200BHP (1400kg base weight), to achieve the same power to weight ratio as a car weighing in at 1336kg's you would need an extra 8bhp.
That means pretty much nothing though to be honest, as the rotational mass has more of an effect from lower speeds, and would you see 8bhp on a car weighing 1400kg in a 1/4 mile test, im pretty confident not.
Its worth doing, but like any weight loss, you need to get a load off before you will see any real benefit..

Well after looking into it a bit more i am pretty sure the right lane was having an off day.Here are my two time slips chose these two becausue they are a virtually identical time.But different traps,the quickest trap i got in the left lane was 112.6.

The actual difference in time I calculated for the second part of the 1/4 from the slips was 4.355 and 4.360 so about as identical as it gets. Since i was in 3rd gear there only shifting to 4th,so most variables are out of the calculation at that point. Because we know the time and the distance we can calculate the average speed to be respectively 103.330 mph and 103.211 mph over the last 1/8 mile. So there is no rational explanation why one slip would read 5mph higher or lower.My quess would be the times are right but the calibration was off for the whole lane as i was up at the 1/8th by 2mph ish.Does anyone know how the system works?
I cannot explain how jonny got the same time in both.What are the chance of getting some money back or a free day :grin: pigs might fly lol!

To be fair, Jonny from what I saw, did three runs in the right lane and one in the left (against me). The one in the left was 115mph and the 3 in the right were 118/119mph, rapid either way really.. My runs were 3 in left lane, best being 13.2 @ 109mph and 7 in the right lane, best being 13.2 @ 111mph, so I tend to agree with you mate.. Times were cock on, but the speed calibration was out IMO..
There was a few other cars which had the same results from what I saw..

Rudeness!Lol the ST has a newer Volvo engine and its quite different to the ones in the 850's.It not as good to tune as its 2.5l they run thinner liners and are alot weaker as a result and like to split with hard use,ford also put tiny IC on it and becasue its a higher compression 9:1 vs 8:5:1 for the older 2.3l units and does'nt use direct injection or similar it like to run inconsistantly IMO with knock when the boost is upped.Bet your glad you did'nt buy one lol.The older 2.3 volvo engines can take some pretty mega power with the right mods.I just like the noise.

This would explain the significant increase in your terminal speed over 1 week with no additional modifications.
Most of guys got cracking times but the terminal speeds seem out of sync with what might be normally expected.
My eyes have been opened to the gains available from weight loss though. Been looking in to a set of Pro Race 1.2's again and I will be going with no rear seats, no passenger seat etc etc for my next time. Would be handy if I could lose 20kg from my 100kg body weight too :signLOL: . Local lad reckons he can supply and fit my current F1's on to a new set of Pro Race 1.2's for £570.
By the way, it is clear DSG is the way ahead with regard to 1/4 mile times but who got the fastest 6MT timefor a K04 TFSi?

I couldnt get a decent 60ft they were all 2.6 or higher. Once i get the vwr clutch and shortshift kit fitted i can do burnouts and get a 60ft around the 2.2-2.3 mark and shift gears slightly quicker to get into the 13's :happy2:
