Title: 2 Door Black MK5 GTi - AirliftPerformance
Post by: FamousGTI on October 01, 2014, 10:05:53 pm
Golf GTi MK5 06' - Black - 27,000 Miles.
Hey Guys, This will be my first Build Thread as i'm pretty new to the forum.
I Have been In Love with Mk5 Golf GTI's for a long time, and the time had come to buy myself one after a Long Awaited saving Period!  i decided to make a Build thread, for both my personal Log of all the little bits that i do to the car over time, and also to share with others alike, gather and share new ideas! :happy2:
Any opinions and ideas are welcome so Post Away, its always nice to hear peoples feedback!  :jumping:
Big Dreams and ideas with this one want to create something different, and something that represents me and the things that i Love about this car. ill keep you posted along the way on its journey to show Car Worthy Condition!

Recent Cambelt and WaterPump done and A Full Service. as it says above i have just clocked over 27,000 miles after a good drive up to Norwich last weekend. (I Am from Kent) it was a Solid 2/3 hour drive, but it gave the car a good run and was a pleasure to drive,  It is a Manual Box too!

A Few Specs:
-Climate Control
-17" Diamond Cut Monza's
-Auto Wipers
-Auto Lights
-Tartan Interior Which i would take over Leather any day.
the Condition is immaculate to say the least!
And all of the other usual bits and pieces too many to list.
The only downside is there is no sunroof! but with the spec, condition and mileage i couldn't say no!

Get some piccy's up! What's the plan for the car then? Or are you going to see what comes around?

I'm assuming it will be on air?  :innocent:

Photos are going up as we Speak Mate. Yes, i have got a few big plans, i hope to get it on air for Next years Show Season! in the mean time some smaller touches, like:

- Exhaust Turbo back system (Done)
- Re-Map (Done)
- Smoothed US Chrome front grill (Done)
- Oem Touchscreen Headunit (Done)
- Ed30 front Splitter or Votex - (Still Looking for one!!)
- R32 rear bumper (Done)
- Shorter Ariel (Done)
- GTI Seat Inserts (Done)
- Key Emblem stickers (Done)
- Valeo LED Rear Tails (Done)
- Glass wiper Blank Insert (Done)
- Xenon headlights
- I Want to pick up VAGCOM at some point giving me access to turning on the DLR indicators
- LED Bulbs all round, in and out.
- Mk6 Steering wheel
- Mk6 Edition 35 Gear Knob and Gator

Once i get the car looking how i want it too, i can then start branching out into performance Mods, it has plenty of power for me to have fun with at the moment, after all i want it to be a show car. that's not saying i wont be doing plenty of performance bits in the future though, starting with the exhaust and Re-Map.

For now, Work on the surface Mods until i get the Air fitted late summer; Hopefully in time to show it off at Editon38, and then it is on to wheels!

Small Update: Bought some of these Aluminium GTI Seat wrench inserts; Love these small OEM type touches that make a big difference with the look of the car!

I also have a Chrome Stripped US spec front grill on the way, so ill get that fitted when it arrives! i also havn't had a chance to give the car a clean since buying it due to work commitments, and the weather being so terrible! if the weather holds up tomorrow i shall try and get out there for a few hours and give it a blast with the snowfoam and a good wax/Detail!

Cheers Buddy, Yes it makes it look so much smarter, just adds something else to the interior! ah, nice man, is this a side exit twin tip that you have got? i am really stuck between sticking with a side exit or R32'ing the rear end and get two centre exit's! :scared: :ashamed:

Ive got the twin side exit with standard rear valance looks pretty good, but yeah the r32 twin exit in the centre does look alot nicer

Evening, some big changes on the horizon, Mods are coming in thick and fast!  :jumping: :jumping: I still have not had chance to get out and take some good pictures of the new Chrome Stripped grille, the weather has been horrendous and by the time i finish work it is dark!

I went a bit mad on a spending spree and purchased a few parts:

- White Centre Valeo LED Tail lights. Very excited to get these on, love the look they give to the rear end! found a New set on Ebay, for Just under £280 from germany, well worth the money Imo.

- R32 Rear bumper Valance.  i had a big debate and many hours scrolling through the forums as to go OEM or a Good replica part... OEM parts were going for £280-350, i would then need to get a respray so i was looking at well over £400 quid and thats before a £1,000 exhaust system!
so i decided to go for a replica part, but not a single cast bumper,  as i wanted the lower cutout valance to come away from the main bumper, i felt they have a little more depth within their look, also a lot similar to the original part! that will be on its way the the body-shop for paint when it arrives. Looking to get a full system custom made for the mk5 too over the next month or so, want it to sound and look crazy, i have always been a fan of the r32 rear end, much more aggressive and wider. so decided to take the plunge!

I Also ended up buying a few smaller details

- New VW Logo Key badges as they hard worn away on my Key Fob.
-OEM VW Bottle opener to go within the sliding compartment Under the arm rest, the cutout was getting on my nerves

Only small things but things that need doing. I will be updating you with pictures as the parts arrive, and will let you know on the fitment of bumper and lights, if anyone was unsure much like i was about going OEM or replica parts the R32 rear end, hopefully i can solve a few of these questions!

Very nice low mile example! The key fob emblem was my first mod too haha.

Excited to hear how the R32 rear goes. Do you have a link for the valance?
Cheers

Which R32 rear did you go for? It's something that I've been toying with as well, but like you I'm not sure if I can justify the cost of a genuine part.

Cheers for the comments everyone, much appreciated!

The Link to the R32 Rear Valance is here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-R32-REAR-BUMPER-REAR-VALANCE-MK5-GTI-TDI-GT-R32-FSI-NEW-BEST-QUALITY/181633249141?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140107083358%26meid%3Da38b0e2500b74d85866cbbba27fbb55f%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D20140107083358%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D281361097419
It was a little more expensive than the single cast bumpers which were around £100, but as said before i wanted a more OEM approach!

Valeo Rear Lights have been fitted.. i cannot believe how much better they look than the red originals! i am in love with them, the red outers are like a deep cherry red which really compliment the white centres! :jumping:
fitting was pretty simple, Some of the Bolts are a little difficult to get to when removing the old lights, but the whole job took less than an hour. :drinking:

One Light removed, i gave it a quick clean ready for the new ones to fit in. to remove: There are 2 Nut/bolts which are underneath the boot lining on each side, Unclip the wiring loom and the lights come free! the boot Lid Lights are a little harder, we ended up un-clipping the boot Trim so that a wrench could get to the Nuts that were in a tricky space!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faf200%2FDreamlessDesign%2FIMG_1865_zps41726854.jpg&hash=70632c1163d4380369bc00f27896f334f4a6fea7)

A comparison to the original lights (Left) and Valeo's (Right) still with plastic coating on!  :ashamed:

Yes.. it pops out. in fact you SHOULD be able to use the clear lens from your old lights.

You should also be able to get a RED flashing LED bulb in that size.

Alright man thanks, i shall take a look into it, would be handy if i can just swap over the one from my the originals, makes it a little easier and will save me from buying a new lens.

R32 Rear end Arrived today as well, really happy with the Quality of it obviously not being OEM i was a little worried about how it was going to be, but so far so good. it looks and feels sturdy with no standout imperfections at all. will see how it fits after it goes in for a respray and the full system goes on in a few weeks time!

Afternoon guys,
Went out and Picked the Rear bumper from the Paint shop today, they have done a stunning job!  :jumping:

Now it was the job of fitting the reflectors, Exhaust valance and the Heat shield took no more than 10 minutes.

I took a trip up to see the boys at EMP Performance in St Albans yesterday, it was around 65 miles away from Kent, so i left at 6am.
i really Couldn't recommend them any better, it was fantastic! i was in for a custom remap, and R32 Full turbo back system which was made up on the day and the build quality is next to none and SOUNDS THE NUTS + goes like a rocket!!  :jumping: Really gets going when the turbo kicks in!

A few shots during the day!

I decided to go for the 4" Blue skinny cut tips as opposed to the bulkier rolled tips. I think it gives the rear a more aggressive look especially contrasting the black!

They always look so different and IMHO a lot better with the R32 derrière and central exhaust. The exhaust iteslf looks excellent too, I really do like the cut tips, may have to get the same made up for mine from BCS and see what they look like in place.

Keep up the good work.

Thankyou, i really love the R32 rear, especially with the slashed tips! the exhaust was all hand-custom made on the day some real workmanship gone into it couldn't fault it! Yes i was looking at BCS before hand they have had really good write ups, although after a few recommendations and it being a lot closer to home for me, i decided to go with EMP!

Nice buddy, i don't think you will be disappointed lemme know how you get on! I got the full turbo back system; well worth the money if i am honest! for both the exhaust and remap it was £1200, Exhaust was £850, the Remap was £350 both inc VAT. i thought i might as well get the full whack done!  :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:

Purchased some White LED Plate bulb Units which should arrive in the next few days; tidy up the rear a little more!
Also going to look into changing all of the interior lights to LED's and grabbing some chrome bits and pieces, will update what gets bought and when they arrive!

I am still on the hunt for an Edition 30 front Splitter so if anyone has one or knows the best place to buy one, give me a shout!  :drinking:

Its been a few weeks, so here is an Update!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faf200%2FDreamlessDesign%2FIMG_2195_zps1r0hwfz3.jpg&hash=fc7730ae5a2596c4e9abd6ccc5d3481a1466d598)

Purchased the LED plate bulb units, and a set of front and rear pressed plates. Currently am only running the rear pressed plates at the minute, as the front is cable tied to the Lower Grille, didn't really fancy drilling the new plates yet.

Also Bought a new head unit, had been looking for a while at an RNS510 to replace my standard 300. but after seeing the reviews for the OEM Kenwood DNX520VBT's sound quality compared to the 510, i couldn't resist purchasing one

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faf200%2FDreamlessDesign%2FIMG_2273_zpsjace0zcn.jpg&hash=3aead163d81f26c3beca13f41b6e9c7de48279eb)

The old unit came out with a few Torx screws and some trim clips, and the new unit went in.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faf200%2FDreamlessDesign%2FIMG_2455_zpskplakcdk.jpg&hash=fcb99aa2f3545c96349b78f45de578b508c832f0)

Overwhelmed with the sound quality, Aux Input, USB, Bluetooth, GPS, DVD etc.etc, and it really fits in well with the interior. :jumpmove:

Its been quite some time since i last posted an update here, I have just been Non-stop saving over the summer so all of the small car parts have been put on hold. it was finally time to have the airlift treatment installed to the golf. The install was done by the boys over at Plush Automotive who have done a fantastic job, if you have any work that needs doing get in contact with them one of the best in the business.  :drinking:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faf200%2FDreamlessDesign%2FIMG_4215_zpsyzl2xqid.jpg&hash=f280160ad1b03d8824dd62404c70989a05026375)

It was their first install of the new Airlift Performance 3P Management system, this is paired with Airlifts performance struts/ and a 5 gallon tank. was excited to see what they would do with the new shaped control panel blending it into the Cigarette lighter compartment. the new Panel is also trimmed in Alcantara and fits like a glove. :popcornsoda:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faf200%2FDreamlessDesign%2FIMG_4239_zpsypgcnafx.jpg&hash=2c486a33532be6e77005167ab1e0e38c250a1260)

I will get some photos up at some point of the boot build. I wanted a simple half sunk tank Build for the moment, until some future plans develop.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Faf200%2FDreamlessDesign%2FIMG_4229_zpsqhfksowt.jpg&hash=5419e37901a6cebee17c30163a40ddbb5329d82c)

Absolutely over the moon with the result, and I'm really looking forward to the summer months next year already
Next on the shopping list is an Edition30 Splitter if anyone has one for sale give me a shout. Then its on to UltimateDubs in March so i might see a few of you there!

I was on the lookout for a new set of wheels for this years season and stumbled across a set of 19" OZ Superleggeras, mint condition in satin silver, come with genuine OZ centre caps and brand new tyres! Heres how it is sitting after fitting them last weekend
There's also been some other pieces added, a Matte Black Sunstrip, repainted the chrome strip on the front grille matte black & I have also managed to grab an edition 30 front splitter!

Cars looking great!!

Out of curiosity did you ask for that 3P set up or did they suggest it?

I've been emailing Phil @ The Install Company (he used to work for Plush but has gone solo) and he suggested that same set up for me.

After researching it they do a 3H system with height/weight sensors too.

Cheers

Thank you! i was originally looking at V2 management, and was offered 3P at a very good price over the V2 so i decided to take the upgrade! very glad i did.  it just depends if you want to splash out and get the 3H system; if I'm honest 3P is a fantastic management and i can't really see much point in the extra money but it depends what you want out of it,
Obviously 3H being height censored, it can adjust with different weight in the car, however i have found even with a heavy load in the car the 3P handles it perfectly.

Hope that helps!  :happy2:

The cars been off the road for a few weeks as a coil pack had blown  :sad1: i decided to order a full set of R8 Coil packs, and some new plugs, keeping the older ones for spares. its now back to driving like a dream  :jump move:

I took a trip down to the AutoFinesse Chill&Grill yesterday; it was a really relaxed day, and some good cars on display. it was probably the best the car has looked to date! cleaned up really well with help from a selection of Auto Finesse Goods. definitely should have taken some better pictures though...
