Title: New 7R to replace the MK6gti
Post by: Neilgti on January 21, 2015, 05:56:44 pm
Well i finally took the plunge and sold the Gti and after 5 years ownership needed something special to replace it, So i ordered an R after a half day test drive,
It came 2 months early  :jumpmove: as there is a 6 months waiting list for these, picked it up last Wednesday and Thursday was booked in for VWR Springs and a set of OZ Wheels for starters,
Then off to the detailers for a few ceramic coatings and a new vehicle prep, while it was in they wrapped the roof, need to get a few miles on it now so i can start fiddling properly with it

Heres a few pics

Beautiful car mate, the roof and wheels definitely set it off.

I'm going to take the plunge and order one in autumn when I've finished building my house.

I'm sure it will be worth the wait and a worthy replacement for my much loved Edition 30.

I think you can say that if you're still happy with the build quality in like 2-3 years.

New looks always great but some materials don't age well. 1st gen materials from armrest and window switches from mk5 were terrible with their rubber touch. They peeled and lost colour. Fortunately mine came with better materials and they aged well, no nail marks or anything.

What Train is that ? Where does that comparison come from ? I would expect your car pulls more like a plane and you have misheard the comment previously ? I think i'll be getting one of these in the future, especially in white -

Well just got back from a Ring trip last week  :happy2:
but before i went i changed my bottom arms and fitted B16s Ride control suspension (change settings via app on phone)

didnt come without its problems tho as usual, had these fitted the day before and the Superpro bottom arms have moved my wheels forward slightly, so the 235 cup 2s on the TDs were catching the front bumper  :sad1: (were fine before) luckily i had 225 Super sports fitted on the Oz's but wait for it ! the Ozs wont clear the Alcons  :sad1: and 10mm spacers caused the same problem as the 235's so a tyre swap was the only way out, 225 SSports onto the TDs, that sorted it  :happy2:
Well got to the Ring and time to test things out a little, suspension into pre set Sport setting car into race mode off i went, initial thoughts were a little un nerving, with the pace of the car and the steering far too skitish on the bumpy track, was pretty dangerous to say the least, so after a few laps to get use to things i altered it into Sport+ and steering into normal in the race mode settings,
Now your talking... steering much softer and this made a huge difference and got a lot more confident with the car, This thing flys ... much quicker than my 6 gti was, can get on the power much much earlier and been able to fully disable the Tcontrol is a great advantage aswell,
The trip and the car was great ... my mate took his van as his car was off the road still waiting for a gearbox shaft, not just an ordinary van tho  with nearly 300bhp and 565lb ft it was no slouch haha had such a laugh and he got a 10.07 .. beating the top gear record was with yellow flags and busy bank hol tourist day aswell haha

Me filming him on the Go Pro

I'm so fed up of reading threads about peoples ring trips, i'm literally green with jealousy right now, looks like you had an awesome time. How did the car behave itself generally? 8 minutes is a quick time, well done.

Where did you get insurance from? I've phoned a few places and they say they don't do European race tracks, I've got a real itch to go and I think once I sell my wheels temptation might be too much

Loving this car BTW, really making the best of what was already a great car out the box.

Cheers pal, you won't get insurance cover for the Ring on a tourist day, your British insurance will cover for 3rd party only ? and if you cause an accident and someone gets hurt... your insurance will pay out and then come after you to recoup the cash !!  :scared:
You'll get cover on a Track day ie DN days  :happy2:

The XDS+ system uses the brakes to torque vector across both axles, so I'm guessing the brakes will get some hammer unless you VCDS that system off (or down to a softer setting)

Well had a bit of a play today removed one of the TDs, to see if the OZs would catch with 10mm spacers fitted and Hankook 225 tyres,
Result... all looks well and will get the rest of the tyres fitted now, looks alot more aggressive i think, just needs dropping a tad more i think 10mm?

Also got them to remove the superpro lower arms and fit the oem ones back on, wasn't happy with the way it pushed the front wheels towards the bumper ! also seems to have stopped the creaking from the B16s, only drove it from the garage home but the noise seems to have gone ? time will tell on this one, also the steering dosn't feel as darty which was really un nerving on track, back on track in a couple of weeks, so will see what the turn in is like etc ... now the arms have been swapped back over ( fitted the superpro and B16s together )

Pic of the superpro arms fitted, look how far forward the wheel is !

Now you can see why i had to lose the 235's  :sad1: (225s in the pic)
Well thats what these forums are for, spread the knowledge and save people making the same mistake, modding is all about trial and error, but can be costly at times.... well all of the time  the only reason i got the arms was to give a bit more camber, but when they came they havn't got or even released the adjustable ball joints yet  :sad1:

Did they used to be SuperSports?

I assume you've dropped the pressure down for track? I ran mine high on the front, to stop it rolling onto the shoulders like that - they don't melt despite it being a bit oddball. I had the comfort of being RWD though, so mine doesn't work them that hard.

Surprisingly the front pressures were atleast 36psi and still rolling onto the sidewall ? i use to run my Gti 30 front 28 back on track, with limpet grip and never caned the sidewalls like that, that was with Yokos tho, never used SS before, they have good grip but the sidewalls are not very upright ? the tyres look stretched on if you know what i mean, prob hence why they are running onto the sidewalls, i was cornering on my doorhandles tho
Will try em with a little more pressure in and see how they go  :happy2:

Yeah, the sidewalls are pretty squishy and you've got all that weight on the nose. There's a 92Y version that should hold up a bit better.

How to ruin handling and ride of your MK5 GTI!!

The white Edition 30 looks ridiculous.......I bet it handles like a pig being that low. The geometry of all components completely out of kilter and ruined.......thats why VAG and respected motorsport manufacturers like Bilstein, KW will be curled up or cringing!

Liking your MK7R though.....some nice touches. Have APR or Revo or others broken the encryption yet on the latest generation cars???

I followed jay around rockingham and was surprised how well it seemed to handle. No idea what it felt like behind the wheel though.

@Msportman (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=437) that Ed30 is likely to be on air ride, so he has lowered it to that height when stopped. He probably raises it to a sensible height for track. . . All at the push of a button

The ED handled really well on track, and it had crap tyres on, as said by Gray it is on air and one of the best kits available at that,  when it's raised it feels like it is on coilovers and certainly doesn't feel like it's on bags, it's not my cup of tea ... But etto
It's running around 380bhp and Mike couldn't shake him off  :happy2:  ........

Yes mate Revo and all the other tuners have been remapping the mk7 Gti and R for a while now,  with some great results aswell, I love mine with the stage 1  :happy2:

Yes my thoughts entirely re air suspension.

Only reason I asked about the mapping on the 7R was that Revo mentioned they had issues with breaking thru the encryption on the latest 2015 car's.....same with APR apparently.

Hvae you ever tried the KW Clubsports?

I'm ordering my third set....brilliant for track and very comfortable on the road. I ran 2 degrees -ve on my old ED30's on competition rubber.

I was contemplating a new R which in my personal spec retailed at £32k thru Drive the Deal
Then another £4500 for map, brakes and suspension.......I may wait for a few to come thru on the second hand market.

I am ordering the KW's and a BBK (Yet to be decided)

Awesome sorted a Stage 2+ package for September

Should be all up together later in the year and ready for next year's track season

What spec and power was your MK6 GTI?

Do you feel power shuffle from the Haldex especially under load on track

Little update on suspension,
Still not 100% happy with B16 ride control system, still making noises and sloppy handling... think it is more of a gimmick rather than for all out handling, so Bilstein have sent me a new B16 kit... not the IRC version, and after 3 months of waiting for them, these have had an upgrade to a triple bearing system and i have noticed that the springs are quite heavily protected with rubber sleeves, getting these swapped over next week foc  :happy2: so hopefully this should quite things down and sort the handling out.. loved the B16 kit on the MK6 and i should of opted for this in the beginning instead of the Gucci version, Hopefully Autotechnica can fit me in this week and get em screwed on  :happy2:
Will update next week

Neil, this is a thing of beauty! I own a mk6 GTI  and currently in the market for one of these used (hopefully next few month) and looking for one in white with the idea of putting the black alloys, roof and mirrors like yours. Either white one or red

The prices of the Rs are absolutely ridiculous for what is basically a golf. You think its worth it upgrading from the mk6 to R? any extras worth looking for on a used one?

Thanks for the pics Dan,
Was having problems on track that day, blew a boost pipe to pieces and kept going into limp mode by shutting a cylinder down :(
We have tried allsorts to try and cure it and is back in as we speak,
it seemed to of started when the cooler was changed ?
Basically it registers a misfire and shuts a cylinder down, was always on no:3,
Changed coil packs
changed injector on cyl 3 (then the misfire went to no:2)
tried 3 different types of plugs
done bore scope (all fine)
comp test (all fine)
Smoke test for leaks (all fine)
General check on all wiring connections
Latest stage 2 Revo Map
back top old stage 2 Revo map
Tried stage 1 map
loads of logs, and shows the odd misfire on all cylinders, fuel pressure ok, boost levels all good,
Rev it to around 6.8k and bang cylinder shutdown :( it is now moving around and shutting down cylinder 1,2 or 3
Really starting to piss me off now .. Going to try putting the standard cooler back on.. on Monday or maybe try stock map 1st ?
Ive got a Ring trip coming up this week, so really need it sorting now (its runs great if not revved to 6.8k)

Any ideas greatly appreciated :)

That sounds like a right PITA. Not a permanent solution but to make it drivable on track maybe put in a 6.7k rev limiter. Best of luck sorting it  :happy2:

@Neilgti (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1306)  Bit late with this now, but did you get to the bottom of the misfire? Could it have been the valve spring float?

I'm suffering with a similar problem  :sad1:

Thought we had got to the bottom of it, after loads of logs etc, it was overfuelling all the time higher in the rev range .. which was making it run really rich when pushing on,
Changed the ECU and this cured it, or we thought it did ?
It was happening that often I could replicate it all the time,
After the ECU change .. I couldn't replicate it,  so I booked in at Cadwell to make sure, few laps in same old story !!

Hence why I've now got the Clubsport lol

Really good shout on the valve float after reading that would of been my next port of call,
Hope you get yours sorted pal ..

I just totally lost the plot with mine

Mines slightly different in that it's not cutting the cylinder like your's was, just missing like mad when over 6K. Hope new valves will sort it or i might be out for a clubsport myself

Thanks @Tfsi_Mike (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=293) only really looking into it now, so only come across APR's offering at like £800  :scared:

Are the R8 springs something Alex would have mentioned? Is it a common replacement? Must do some research...

Alex is aware of them but I don't know if it's something he would recommend over super tech.  They just seem to be much better value for money to me.

Yes, just the normal GTI doesn't have the new diff. It just has XDS which works with the brakes.
