Have twin discrete tailpipes on my gt tdi, wanting to change cat back/ back box for a gti/ ed30 one so i can have the twin tailpipes coming out.
I have brought a gti rear valance already...
What is it that i need to change?? I dont know much at all, lol! Is it the cat back or back box? whats the difference!
Any help much appreciated, feel free to laugh at me too, i dont mind!

I bought a Cat Back Milltek system for my GT-TDI. Got it from Awesome with a rear valance which came to £416 delivered.
You can get a Resonated or Non Resonated system, Resonated inculdes an extra silencer where the Non Resonated doesn't.
I think i've also read about people fitting the back box from a 170bhp TDI and using a reducer clamp. Have a search around, might be able to find something about this.

Yes i think i read this somewhere too, on another forum. Did briefly look into a Milltek resonated cat back but about £400 like you said! I'll happily settle for a used gti exhaust or similar for under £100.
So did you go for resonated or non resonated? What's it like?
-
To change to the twin exhaust easiest option is to get a 170 back box part no:v1k6253609bh for around £120.
You then need to cut your the pipe on exhaust that is currently on your car just before it reaches the back box you will see on the 170 back box where this needs to be done but leave a little extra on the pipe on the car to allow it to slide into the back box pipe. Then its a simple case of cutting 2 v shaped pieces out of the pipe on the 170 box slide this over the existing pipe add a little exhaust paste and clamp the pipe down onto the pipe on the car you dont need an adapter.
Im not the best at explaining things but anygood exhaust centre will no what to do its a 5 min job max.
Ill try and get some pics of mine up today.

Thanks Ben :happy2:
I did look into getting the 170 back box from vw, think it was just under £200. Tried to look around for a cheap used one and came across the Ed30 exhaust on here instead so I got that.
Do you know if it will fit on my gt in the same way as you describe??
Those pics look good, like the way only top half of the valance is coloured...
-
Yeah i belive its more or less the same with the ED30 exhaust but im not sure the whole sytem is needed just the back box but if you got the whole system keep the centre section and stick it on ebay etc. Yeah it makes a drastic difference to the look of the car especially if you leave the centre section black it breaks it up a bit. Have you found a exhaust centre to fit it yet?
Ben
-
Exhaust should either come tomorrow or day after i think...
Havent really thought about anywhere to get it done but i know someone who works in a garage who may be able to do it.
On the link that you provided earlier, i see they were saying something about needing the gti arch liners? Did you have this problem at all?
Also, the gti valance i got is the rough one, not the smoothed one so dont know whether i should smooth it down, or try to shall i say! :signLOL:
-
The valance you have will be the ''standard'' GTI one.The ''smooth'' one is from the edition 30 which is a lot more. :happy2:

Oh I see... Never thought that! I knew the smooth one cost about 10x more so just opted for the other one...
-
Yeah stick to the GTI valance and get a bodyshop to do it should cast you around £100 smoothed and sprayed which is still £200 cheaper than the ED30 part.
Ideally you need the GTi liners as the gti bumper is a little wider at the bottom so you will have about 1cm gap at the very bottom. I didnt bother changing mine but if you are fussy i belive the gti liners are around £20 each.

I've (and my bf) just spent the best part of today trying to smooth the bumper down, still not as smooth as I'd like yet but getting there!
I think I'll prob whack the bumper on and see what it's like before deciding on the arch liners...
Ben, don't suppose you got any pics of yours just so i can get an idea of how it'll look?
-
Good luck smoothing it all down its not as easy as sanding your nails isit :signLOL:
Ill get some pics taken tomorrow i was going to get some for you today but i left my camera lead in my house so ill take some in the morning for you.
Ben
-
Well it's slightly harder than i first imagined (nothing like filing nails!) but i'm sure it'll be ok in the end
If all else fails then I'll take it down the garage for them to finish it off before they spray it.
I thought about takin some before n after pics of the car but the weather is poo at the mo.
Look forward to seeing your pics!

Before and after pics are a must just get your coat on and get out and take some.
Here are the pics of the arch liners on my car excuse the pics a pro i am not

Thanks for the pics, golf is looking good :happy2:
I see what you mean about the arch liners, dont think it will bother me too much...
Dropped my valance off today, slightly gave up with the smoothing over! They said they'll primer it and smooth it some more before spraying it. Asked for bottom half to be matte black, dunno if it'll look right
Cos we know the owner, he's goona get my exhaust sorted and fitted too! :happy2:
Might try out my camera skills in a mo...
-
Its ok :happy2:
When it comes to the centre section i would leave that as it is textured or have you already sanded it?
If you have sanded it matt black would look cool :happy2:
-
defo worth doin...the cars look so much better with the twin pipes....cant wait to see it finished

I did exactly this on my old GT TDI, I bought a GTI box on ebay they come up regulary as people always changing for aftermarket, from memory think I got it for ~ £50 in mint condition. Then I took off the old box and the mid section pipe. This needs to be laid next to the GTI box as the lengths are different (as are the pipe diameters) I cut the TDI mid section pipe to fit the GTI box and bought a reducer connector (from halfords I think, they are about a couple of quid or get one from your local kwik fit or similar) then the GTI box fits straight onto the TDI hangers, perfect fit, connected up with the reducer. I fitted the GTI valence (didn't paint it and jobs a good one. The sound was prefect as was the fit, quality, etc and best of all the price was really cheap.
Really good cheap mod, don't see the need for any expensive milltek back box (or similar manufacturer)..............
-
Hi, thanks for that info.
Few days ago, I dropped my gti valance off at my mate's garage to be primed/sparayed etc...
He told me to get hold of a reducer and clamps etc then he'd fit the back box for me when the valance was ready to go on...
Went to Southern Exhaust for starters, explained that I needed a reducer for Ed30->gttdi, asked for my reg. etc but they didn't have a clue about the sizes so were basically useless...
Went to TyreShops/Exhausts, again explained my situation, they lifted the car up... The bloke there had no idea either, said he'd only know if he cut and fitted it all there and then. I couldn't have it done tho cos valance not changed yet, so still got nowhere!
I asked in VW if they could tell me the pipe sizes, answer was no.
Told my mate that I had no luck, in the end he just said leave it to him and he'd do all of it at his garage(valance+exhaust), he couldn't believe it either that it was so much trouble just to get a reducer! I didn't think it would be this hard and cant understand why nobody seemed to know the size.
Dont suppose you can remember the size of the reducer you used? I'm not sure if the GTi exhaust and ED30 would be the same size anyway...
-
No sorry don't remember the size, I basically measured the new gti back box section and the old TDI section before I took the old exhaust of the car. I think the ed 30 is even wider than the gti.
-
It does look noticeably wider
How did it sound when you had the gti back box on there, any different to before?
-
sounded exactly the same, just looked much better with the twin rear pipes. Which was why i did it (and being an ebay buy it was a cheap quality mod as std VW bits ;-))
