I never planned to change my rear brakes from stock but got tempted one morning last year in the For Sale section by DaveB who is something of a brake specialist. Yes my rear would occasionally get slightly twitchy under hard braking but nothing to worry about. I have AP Racing Big Brake Kit on the fronts and can't praise them highly enough.
My stock GTI rear discs were not in good shape:

Volkswagen Racing fitted my S3 rears for me and not without difficulty in undoing a spline on each side. Not a job I would consider doing myself:

I didn't know quite what to expect when I went out for a test drive. To be honest I was very concerned that I might fall victim to the placebo effect. However, the car's braking now feels very solidly even front and back and there is no sign of any twitching so far.
I had plenty of time to paint the calipers red but I think they look better left in black with my OZ Titanium colour wheels. There is volumes of space for ventilation and brake dust disposal with my OZ Alleggerita's. I didn't need to do this mod but I'm rather pleased I did.

There are quite a few other GTI/Ed30's on this forum now fitted with S3/R32 rear brakes.

those guys were busy over the weekend  some smashed up cars at oulton  crazy gits
brakes look good Robin
-
That guy doing the brakes for you, looks like he is doing a body search on JoesGTI when he recently came back from Holland.
The black matches the wheels really well. :happy2:

yeah fit my brakes too  i spent a few hours chatting to him,he knows his stuff

good move mate . a good upgrade if you have bigger fronts
-
Maybe it's just the pictures but did they remove the rear splash guards
-
cool RR :happy2:
like you I prefer black calipers.
-
RR are we not going to get a product review, a good review from all the guys whp have this would be a good edition to that forum.
-
very good and usefull mod!
-

....You spotted it well, Steve. The GTI (06-build, 05-plate) guards wouldn't fit the S3/R32 disc size so we decided to leave them off.
-
^^^ Umm IIRC all GTI rear splash guards are the same (but could be wrong), they just need bending back to fit behind the wider ventilated discs :happy2:
-

....Hmm.. I suppose that if people thought it would be helpful I could start a review thread but I would need to gather more info and also include links to threads like stokeballoon's fitting guide etc.
-
robin do you still have the guards ? they defo fit but as steve said they need a little tweek . happy do do it for you if you still have them

....That's exactly what I thought too. However, there didn't seem an obvious way to adapt them and we decided they weren't really necessary. I'll keep an eye on that area whenever she's up in the air on a lift.
I ought to check stokey's thread and see if he posted more specific info there.
-
Very nice! I have a set that I got from SteveP and can't wait to get them on my car. Think I will be sending them to DaveB before hand for some of his magic before hand :happy2:

....That's very good of you to offer :drinking:. IIRC they got cut into - Nearly 5 years and 82k miles made it difficult to remove the stock brakes. I left them in VWR's scrap pile.
-
if you do decide to get some more drop me a line mate

....Will do. I'll see how it goes without them. :drinking:
-
Nice one Robin. They do make a considerable difference to the balance of the car under hard braking and a VERY positive one :happy2:
-
So the fronts are red and the backs are black? :rolleye:
Waiting for the review!

Some where sceptical of my previous reports..............
Anyhow, GTI splash guards are all the same, just need to push them back a little bit. They are fitted for a reason, about £5-6 a side from the TPS.
Edit - Splash guards are about £10-12 a side, bit more expensive than R32 Fronts............

Yep when I brought a set last year they where £12.10 a side (RRP).
I will be retaining my splash guards when I get my R32 rears fitted next week :happy2:

....Thanks, Dave :happy2:
Then perhaps I should buy some shiny new black ones.
Can they be fitted without removing the rest of the brake assembly?

....Sometimes the design theory/logic doesn't work.
I'll take and post a side-on pic in due course (in that review thread I might one day get around to writing). Don't forget that my OZ LeggyRita's are a major aesthetic component and also that my AP red calipers look nothing like an oem caliper. The design logic says it shouldn't work but I honestly think it does on my particular car.

Respecting and accepting that 'splash guards', or are they 'stone guards', are fitted for a reason, I'm curious what that reason is.
-
Splash, Sh!t, stone guards, all stuff to be kept away from the brakes IMO. VW spent enough time designing it, and ensuring fit for purpose and safe operation.
To refit a set, you will need to cut a part of the shield out, to feed it over the hub. See the below illustration.
part numbers
1K0 615 611 P - Splash Shield left
1K0 615 612 P - Splash Shield right

Ps you will have to remove the disc and caliper, not sure about the carrier............

Ps you will have to remove the disc and caliper, not sure about the carrier............
....That's a bummer! I suppose this can be done without undoing the brake lines and having to bleed the brakes?
I assume a S3 or R32 sh!t guard can't be fitted to the GTI.
-
S3/R32 guards have different bolt hole mounting centres, i could not get 2 screws in, never mind 3.
Leave the brake lines attached, no need to disconnect them, and therefore no need to re bleed.

Thx Quality Dave :happy2:
You can go back to your fishing now..

I thought that I read somewhere (maybe on here) that the splash guards from a MKII Leon Cupra fits......maybe I dreamt it..... :signLOL:

I'll have to sort out the splash guards later this month after my Noodleburgering trip with Hurdy (who IIRC doesn't have splash guards either).
Meanwhile, can anyone advise me, please?:

^ The part painted black is oem silver on my S3/R32 rears and I'm wondering if it will go rusty. I should have painted mine during the many months I had before fitting.. Duh! Is it possible to brush paint without taking off the whole brake kit again? What sort of paint?
-
Hammerite maybe?
Alex
-
i painted mine whilst off the car without the pads in using red engine paint .

....I'm told that engine paint is very unlikely to withstand the level of high temperatures a hub-disc can be subjected to, but that caliper paint will.
I've found a caliper paint which can be brush applied. So I won't have to remove my brakes and leaving my car inside my garage unused for 48hrs is no problem.

BBQ paint?

ready for fitting now :jumpmove:

Both spray paints :sad1:
I'm really pissed off with myself for missing the opportunity to paint mine during the months, not weeks, I had them stored in my garage.
-
Spray a load of it in the lid of the can and then apply with a brush - job done.

....A good workaround but spray paints are usually very fast drying. I think I prefer to use the caliper paint which comes with a brush. At this stage I don't want to be doing more than just removing a wheel if I'm doing it.
