Hi all
Had a coil pack go on mine this weekend.
28,000 on the clock
Anybody else's gone and at what sort of mileage.
Just one of those things I suppose, very common on all modern cars, due to emissions, needing a powerful spark.
Dead easy to do other than getting off the engine cover! Why are the grommets so robust, it took me and the RAC man to get it off without breaking it!
Cheers

I lost a pack around that mark, and then another two at maybe 60k. No trouble for ages though.
-
Had a coilpack die on me last wednesday car has done 35k :happy2: So i replaced all 4 just to be on the safe side.
-
out of interest how much is it for all four?

Good practice mate. Mine seam ok at 34k miles (touch wood)
-
I managed to get 50k before one let go. I then got a nice set of RS4 ones from the USA ( same but has a nice red touch to them) even delivered they cost half price than from a dealer. :scared:

Thats good to know, cheers. Direct fit? No more reliable i guess, just easthetics?
-
They look identicle to the normal ones just for colour. Not sure about reliabilty, has anyone heard of RS4 owners with coil pack probs? They might be better.

I paid just over 96quid but i get special discount
-
Anyone got the stock number of the proper Gti coilpack ?
-
Oh, me likey that.
-
The part number on my 08 coil packs ( not rs4) is 07K 905 715 D the RS4 one is 06E 905 115E
-
Put one in mine at 29k, number one cylinder.
Part number 07K 905 715 F

How do you diagnose a failed coilpack?

How do you diagnose a failed coilpack?
My friends 1.8 20vt just had coilpack failure and that was running really poorly. Misfiring, sounded like a flat 4 on tickover, smelt a bit rich. Not experienced it on tfsi

More or less the same on a tfsi car did sound like a subaru :signLOL: Plus i had a very eggy smell :surprised: and the engine managment light come on

Would you say its worth keeping a spar in the boot just in case or can you still get home even though one has failed?
I havent had any probs as yet on my 06 GTI 52k
-
I once just drove home (only about 5 miles) and then to the VW dealer (also about 5 miles) on three cylinders.
-
i have just had my second coilpack gone, when i changed the first a month ago i didn't bother to take it apart to change the last 3 after testing, seems like i should have done so :stupid:
mine goes like a 3 cylinder Daihatsu charade, sounds like esp is cutting ignition, atnd won't pull at all.
-
Is there any way of logging or diagnosing a failing coil pack with VAGCOM?
-
will the car still boost properly when the coilpacks start to play up?

You can get home if one goes but i wouldnt recomend driving far. If you do happen to have a spare in the boot you should be able to fit it at the side of the road quite easily but you will need to find out which coil pack is playing up the way to do this without a vag com etc is to simply unplug each coilpack one by one until you notice no difference in the engine. Obviously if you unplug a coilpack that is fine the engine will run alot rougher as it will only be running on 2cylinders :surprised: If you unplug a coilpack and there is no change in the engine idling it should be that coil pack that is knackered. But honestly the best thing to do is take it to a garage and get them to do it for you :happy2:
Plus some engine covers are a right pain in the backside to get off :fighting:

Not sure how vagcom shows engine faults but the computer in work the proper vw computer just showed misfire cylinder 3

I think so mate i could still feel my turbo kicking in when mine went wasnt a nice experience when its only running on 3 cylinders though :rolleye:

Good point about identifing which one had gone, I assume a AA/RAC guy would be able to do this?
-
Yeah they should be able to identify which one has failed even if he hasnt got a computer its a very simple task to do when you know what to do.
-
I've had one go at about 70k miles. Most of the VW Assist RAC vans carry the GTI version (different from normal Mk5).

Hope you don't mind me piggy-backing this thread.
Please delete if so and I'll start a thread.
At my 2nd service 20k Awesome Gti picked up that there was water in no4 spark plug hole.
I've just fitted irridiums and all but number 4 coilpack were shiny, like new.
This was where water seems to be still getting in to it;

should I be worried?
-
Do you power wash the engine? I had power washed my engine and later i found water like you did so i put it down to that.
-
Never ever as Ive seen what can happen when water ingresses into the coilpack loom :surprised:
I have no engine cover but bizzarre how its just in one cylinder
-
Didn't DanGB have a problem like this? It's very strange how water gets in there under the bonnet in a hot engine :scared:

Yep, melted all his coilpack connector and damaged the loom. The sound insulator used to droop so i removed it, it seamed to retain water so maybe that stops it from getting on the engine.
It drooped looked messy and scorched my engine cover. perhaps ill try a new one and try new clips.
The only other thing i can think of is if the sealing rubber on the coilpack isnt doing its job
-
I get water in my engine bay, when I lift the bonnet it drips right onto the coilpack area.Think the bonnet insulation did stop this from happeneing.
-
Mike, Poverty;
Guys, I also get water in my engine bay as I have the sound insulation removed and when I bought the car I changed the plugs and cylinder number 4 was full of water also :fighting: I phoned the dealer I had bought the car off and it turns out they had pressure washed the engine before I went to look at the car :surprised:
So I used an air line to blow out the water in cylinder 4, cleaned the Coil pack with WD40 and Electrical Contact Cleaner and refitted everything been fine since.
I do periodically check the coil packs by removing them and seeing if there is any water building up around the spark plugs again but nothing since thankfully.
When I remove the coilpacks I clean up inside them with Electrical Contact Cleaner and cotton swabs (like the ones for your ears lol) then spary a light coating of WD40 on the outside of them, let them dry off and refit them. I don't know if this helps them or not though.
-
Will give that a go, ta mate :happy2:
-
She's poorly :(
misfiring. Coilpack 4 was dirty and wet. Steve @ statlers put me in a new one and seamed ok. Still misfiring in hi map under load :'(
what to do. Was fine till I swapped for the irridiums
-
What is the ed30 / cupra / s3 coilpack part number?
Cheers!
