For one reason or another i actually forgot about doing this since the last change :surprised: (getting married etc )
I bought 2 cam followers last time so had a spare sat in the Garage. However for the last 28k miles it hasn't been changed :ashamed:
After a gentle reminder with a thread put on here today linking my tutorial i thought i'd nip out and get mine swapped over.
I took some pics to show what the wear is like on a Mar 2007 TFSi engine. I kept the new one in the pot whilst changing the pics just so i didn't get it dirty.

.........fancy doing mine ?.
-
Where are you located?
I don't mind if you want to drive to me :happy2:
-
Quite similar wear pattern to mine after about 15k miles. I'm just not hearing about the 'horror of Autotech HPFP internals' from any source any more but probably won't leave it to 28k myself
-
I wouldn't do normally myself Dave and i will be ordering a new one tomorrow so i have a spare.
I just forgot as i haven't been using the car as much and i can't expect the wife to do it
-
This was my follower after around 31k.

Still had plenty of life left in it but I changed it anyway.

This is an extract from an Audi TSB. If you read through it says that the wear indicated by mine and others Cam Followers doesn't need changing. But i always do mine for peace of mind. £25 for new Cam Follower or about £1k for new camshaft. Makes sense to me

As I know nothing about engines, can the cam follower actually "go"? Mine is 07 with 26k miles and I'm wondering about doing the belt, pump etc.
-
It "can" go (as you can see in the pic) but generally on newer engines (late 2006 iirc) there was a revised design of Cam Lobe which improved the problems people were having.
Only reason i check mine so much is because it has done 61k miles, has Autotech HPFP Internals and is at Stage 2+ so i just do it to be safe rather than sorry.
You still have a while yet before your Cambelt & Pump need doing (4yrs and 80k is the norm but VAG keep changing their minds).
I did my Cambelt & Pump at 52K miles purely because of being Stage 2+.

Can't really get any further as im in Folkestone :sad1:
But follow the tutorial and you can't go far wrong :happy2:
-
I thought it was only the early axx engines which don't suffer this problem?
-
The earlier engines are more likely to suffer, as Carl said they revised the cam lobe for later cars.

........typical :signLOL:. But thanks for that.

Done a bit of digging on this and info on almost all sites say axx isn't affected, it was only from 2006 onwards the problem started. I remember joegti had his checked recently and had no wear at all on a 2005 engine?!

Someone has mentioned above about cambelt change, do they replace this with the cambelt and water pump change? And for reference the latest from VW customer services which I have in writing is 4 years and 110k on the cambelt! Think the wind was behind them that day.

Cheers Gene, I suspected as much but im ever hopeful of finding some intrinsic value in a main dealer service, but im never happily suprised! Might look into getting this done at somepoint then. :sad1:
