when i pulled out a junction and changed into second it was like the power cut from the car and then it was like the revs were being limited and would struggle to get past 3000rpm and when it was above that it felt like there was no boost is it the engine limiting the revs for some reason or is the problem bigger like turbo gone or that its a 2005 golf gti with 76k miles anybody help me out
-
Yes - the car goes into "limp" mode when there's something wrong.
We need a clearer discription plus is your car manual/dsg?
Given that it's out of warranty, I'd say have a look at the VCDS register and see who is the closest to you and get it scanned for faults. Could be anything.
-
its a manual and one of my mates has vagcom so he should be able to scan it for me
so its not likely to be a turbo problem then if the car is meant to do this when something is wrong
-
also the car is due a service for the last 1500 miles just not had the cash to get it done plus it came on before 10000 miles the light
-
yup no power above a set rpm and a top speed.
could be 1 of a million things, as small as a sensor or as big as your engine was stolen and replaced with a hamster.
-
well the only thing that ive noticed weird under the bonnet is the oil cap has split in two again 3rd cap now is it possible the top half could have came off and hit summit and caused a fault
-
split in 2??? never heard of this!
-
Anything other than a fault scan is speculation so as above get your mate to help out.
-
yeh the top part keeps coming off but the actual cap itself is still in the hole lol i need pliers to get it out
-
With your broken oil cap sagas, me thinks it is something to do with incorrect pressures in the crankcase ventilation - which will lead to errors in the air/fuel mixture.
But as others have said, get it scanned with VCDS asap - and then post your fault codes.
-
a few weeks back after topping up the oil (1 LTR over 5000 mls anyone know if this is ok) i started the car up BLOODY HELL the engine was hunting, chugging making a right racket ,it was then that i realised i had left off the oil cap.I couldnt beleve the difference it made.

Haha - I've done that - ONCE. :ashamed:
And your oil consumption is well within spec and reasonable tollerances. :happy2:
-
Could be a coilpack.......
-
faulty pcv maybe? best way is to get the car scanned for any faults 1st :happy2:

what would cause this problem and would it be an expensive fix

Your crankcase ventilation system is linked into your inlet manifold - any leaks anywhere in the intake system will really mess up the air/fuel mixture, therefore messing up the overall running of the engine, and ultimately throwing a warning light on the dash and will make the engine go into 'limp home mode' (where the engine feels utterly gutless, and wont rev over 3,000 rpm).

i have bluefin stage 1 on it should i go back to stock till i find out or wait till i get it scanned incase it clears the fault codes
-
Cant the bluefin handset get the codes from your car? I'm sure I read it somewhere.
-
im not sure if it can ive heard something about it but never really looked into it
-
just restored the original map back on still getting the light coming on and the car is idling really rough feels like its misfiring also the bluefin had no option on it to scan for codes just imobilise or blufin
-
got aa out the guy had vagcom told me it was the fuel pump thats the problem
-
got aa out the guy had vagcom told me it was the fuel pump thats the problem
Which fuel pump? The car has two very different pumps!
Me thinks if the AA diagnosed it with VCDS (aka VAG-COM) - then it is probably the in-tank low pressure fuel pump.
-
im not sure what fuel pump but it definatly was vagcom he had im going to try get it scanned again and get the actual fault code that came up im sure it was something about fuel pressure regulating but i honestly cant remember for sure
-
Dont blame the mechanical HPFP immediately, i have seen this fault caused by various other components. I would reccomend finding a local specialist that can help, or a member on here that has vcds that can take some logs and post up any fault codes.
-
i was speaking to a guy who works for vw and he said it might be the fuel pressure regulator but he said get vcds done and then he can tell me whats wrong
im gettin my mate to scan it tomorrow night all going well he has a mk4 gti so i dont know if his lead will do my car might need a newer one for can ive heard is this right or will his lead be able to tell me fault codes
-

If it mentioned fuel pressure - then I'd stick my neck out and say it is NOT the pump. More likely to be the fuel pressure regulator, of which there was a recall-type service action.
-
i had that sensor go but had no issues like above all i had was a massive flat spot from 4k up , i would be a little more concerned about splitting 3 oil caps , something is pressurizing (head gasket , worn rings ?)
-
fault code p2294 fuel pressure sensor open circuit or bad connection
any help i got this from my local garage they ran their diagnostic machine on it not vag com i cant get any1 to scan it with vag com
and i think the oil cap thing is due to my engine cover being held on my one mount as whoever serviced it last snapped the others off so there is a bit of movement in the cover possibly knocking against the oil cap
-
Are you sure it wasn't P0194?
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16578/P0194
-
the garage told me it was p2294
-
With regards to the oil cap, I had to replace one because the 'handle' part at the top if you will split from the bottom part which effects the seal. It wasn't leaking or letting air in or anything just very difficult to take off becuase you had to push down hard to make the thing turn. Is this what the OP means rather than the sealing part has failed?

I think he's been misinterpreted here ...
-
yeh thats right the thing is still sealed its just the plastic handle thats came off i dont think ill bother with getting another one as they keep breaking
-
anybody know what this fault code means p2294 i cant seem to find anything other than fuel pressure sensor open circuit or bad connection
-
Sure its not p2293?
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18725/P2293/008851
I have seen this a couple of times, both times was fuel pressure sensor at fault.

my filler cap has done the same top part has gone all together now anybody know if the R8 oil cap fits ?
-
Boxer... yes the R8 cap fits!
-
the problem is the sensor on top of the fuel pump has cracked because of the engine cover hitting it because the mounts are broken the pump has to be replaced as a unit to fix this i took a pic on my phone of the damage so the picture is not very good (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy204%2Fstu_no_1%2FIMG00014-20101102-1424.jpg&hash=cb34b242a8aff4ba22563b08b728ae8d074acb38)
so anybody with a loose engine cover dont just ignore it or it could cast you a fortune now im having to buy a new engine cover and a new fuel pump to fix the problem and ill be getting a new oil cap when i get the new cover on so if you have had problems with your oil caps breaking check that you engine cover is not hitting off your fuel pump
-
There is an APR pump on VAGOC IIRC.
-
if only i didnt need to get it serviced asap after all this i would be wanting to get a hpfp its already pissing me off that i have to buy a new engine cover when i intend on getting a forge twintake at some point but i cant afford 350 plus a fuel pump and servicing it
-
Can you borrow an engine cover from someone??
If not try the bay or a scrappy.
New cover is quite expensive as it includes a MAF.
-
nobody i knows has an engine cover and was at my local scrappy the day nothing plus i dont know when ill have enough for an intake now anywayz so ive just ordered a new one costing me 150 it comes with a new air filter aswell
-
:happy2:
Boxer... yes the R8 cap fits!
Cheers
-
If you buy an R8 cap from a dealer then you need to open it up to orientate the markings correctly - Quite simple though.
Some places such as awesome sell them already modified.
-
Had to do it on my mk4 will get one from the steelers i think
-
Stu I have a engine cover + the sensor u require. Pm me if you didn't sort this.
-
aw man talk about bad timing i just spent 300 pound at vw buying a new engine cover and fuel pump lol
-
aw man talk about bad timing i just spent 300 pound at vw buying a new engine cover and fuel pump lol
sorry man only just saw this :sad1:
i know the pain of buying a fuel pump!
-
how did u have the sensor when it doesnt come seperate
-
Both sensors screw off the fuel pump, I have 2fuel pumps, one on my car and the other sat in my garage.
-
orite well vw dont sell it seperate talk about ripping you off eh
