Title: Cheapest Coil Pack?
Post by: Boothy on January 30, 2011, 01:55:08 pm
Just a simple one......

......Had a look on Google and I'm struggling to find many places that sell these. Its likely that I'll need to buy one very soon so was wondering if anyone had found somewhere that did them on the cheap?

Cheers.

I bought 4 from here:

Worked out at £80 all in delivered - didn't have to pay any duty either.

For the Mk5 GTI they cost no more than £25 each. You don't have to change all of them at once. I keep a spare in my boot.

Tried Google and they were all around £40.00 and I'd heard that when one goes the others are usually not far behind. If I can get away with just one, for £25 I'm laughing! Haven't tried the dealers though yet. Are they about £25 from there Robin?

I think if it's £18 (?) then you may be liable to pay duty but on the invoice on the front of mine they listed the pack as $19 something, but didn't have it listed as 4x that (since I bought 4) - so customs perhaps thought it was below the £18 limit? However, I believe they sometimes add in the postage cost too, so perhaps I was just lucky. However, still works out cheaper even if you get stung.

....From VW Assist via RAC when broken down on the roadside!

I've had 18 months between 2 coilpacks going.

Spoken to Vw, Skoda and Seat. Cheapest was at Skoda who gave me 10% off. £32 plus Vat but everywhere out of stock so tried Andrew Page wholesalers. £46 inc vat and in stock but not quite the £25 I was hoping for.

From what I gather the engine becomes a bit smoother and with increased mpg.
On the performance side there is documented dyno evidence of hp and torque increases but the exact values vary depending on the car and state of modifications.

Ended up just paying £46 for a coil and fitted it this aft. I just wanted it sorted so just went and bought it. Picked up some new plugs too which my mates gonna swap over as its approaching 60k now. The plugs they sold me are NKG double platinum but no where on the pack does it say they are iridium which I thought they had to be? they were around a tenner a plug so I'm presuming they will be ok to use?

....Continual misfiring, down a cylinder so huge loss of power at low revs, or even unable to turn the engine over at all. Always feels and sounds like a far worse problem than it is has hit you.

....Mine felt like my exhaust had blown! Big stuttering at low revs but more driveable (kept under 50 mph) though still not healthy.

My first one caused me to be completely unable to restart my engine after stopping for V-Power.

I wonder if sourced in the UK. Expensive though. As Thor suggests, you'd want a lifetime warranty at that price.

So, this thread has gone from seeking the cheapest coilpack available to suggesting the most expensive in the world!

I had a few just 'let go' when under full load in my last 1.8T, car sounded like it was a Scooby  :sad1:. The last time it happened I pulled over in a bus stop and replaced it with the spare I had in the boot, I got some very funny looks from the people waiting for the bus  :signLOL:

There are only one or two places that officially do Okada stuff in the UK and it's mainly for BMW and Scoobies.

If you want to get them then get them from the US but postage and import duties may make these coilpacks even more unaffordable.

....If they were lifetime guaranteed and delivered a real saving in mpg then they might be worth it but not with all the duty hassle as well. I resent paying any kind of such taxes.

when one of mine went it felt like i'd thrown a piston to be honest, it was shaking and shudderingso badly i thought the worst, it was close to being undrivable and if i was further from home i would have called in the rac, but as i was only 1/2 a mile away i limped home with all the warning lights on! :scared:.

I replaced all 4 as they were revision 'b' units and quite prone to failure (apparently) so off to http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/ (http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/) the next day to pick up a full set for £102 inc the VAT. an hour later and the car was sweet again, no need to have any lights or fault codes cleared, just worked fine!

I worked out it was pot no. 4 and binned that one, i kept the others for future emergency repairs, one in the spare wheel well for 'real' emergencies but to be honest the RAC carry these as they break down so commonly.

....Well, that's what I was told by my RAC mech. He actually showed me the one he'd got on board and phoned another RAC mech mate of his who was on his day off. It was very early on a Saturday morning and his mate's wife seemed to relish getting her hubby out of bed for it! My mech then disappeared for 45 minutes to go and get it. I guess that some RAC mechs might carry them for the GTI but that was my experience. Far fewer GTI's on the road than other Golfs.

It would be logical and economical to standardise such parts right across a car manufacturer's model range but each engine type has different requirements as the never ending development makes progress.

Out of interest I'll ask JKM when I see them on Wednesday - They're changing more of my coilpacks as I had a misfire on their dyno yesterday.  :happy2:

....Ooops! I drove 90 miles home from JKM but kept the revs low and didn't experience any misfires. I'll have to drive 90 miles to JKM on Wednesday and will take it steady again.

Are you advising that even doing that is a no-no, Stu?

As the misfires happened on JKM's dyno, wouldn't they have advised me not to drive the car if it was that bad?
Title: Re: Cheapest Coil Pack?

Has the coil pack failed completly (running on 3 pots) or just getting misfires?

If its just misfiring then you will be fine, its just not advised to drive with a dead coil pack..

....No-one near except my VW dealer and they would have to charge me a minimum labour plus I know they're very busy right now and probably couldn't fit me in before Wednesday. My Service Manager friend has now left and the two women replacements frankly wouldn't know what a coilpack was - They'd probably think it was a special offer on contraceptive coils!

I could phone them tomorrow though.

....Sneaky but I like it!  :drinking:

So, do I park up somewhere a few miles from home, call VW Assist and say I've just had what I think is a couple of misfires and am worried about driving further so could they please help (pity I'm not female on such occasions). Tell them I think it's a coilpack.

I'm not sure they'd come if I'm at home for such a fault although I do have full cover including home.

Re my occasional misfire only under load:

JKM, who experienced the misfire under load on the dyno on Saturday, tell me I should be fine to drive the 90 miles to them if I continue to take it steady. I have to pass by JKM on Wednesday anyway and I have VW Assist/RAC full cover and a spare coilover in my boot if it gets worse en route.

I have a recording session tomorrow and so doubt my window of free time would coincide with Dave also having a window. Plus I am low on V-Power and would have to travel an extra 30 miles to get some before visiting him whereas the nearest Shell station is on my route on Wednesday.

So thanks for the helpful info, Nath, but I think Wednesday and JKM is my best option.  :drinking:

....Something I acquired on the way  I better check that it is indeed a coilover as I thought I spotted some batteries in it. It compliments the 5-litre can of aptly named Fuchs oil I also carry - Something which Thor likes to use on special occasions such as at hen parties or jumping out of birthday cakes. You never know when you might need these things.
