Title: E30Dom's Edition 30
Post by: E30Dom on April 16, 2011, 09:45:27 am
Hey all,

Thought it was about time i stuck some photos up of my Ed30... So far all i've done is LED number plate bulbs, LED sidelights, satin blacked the VW badge and removed the GTi badge on the boot... oh and given it it's first detail...

She's going in MOnday for a new water pump and cam belt under warranty which will sort the scuufing/squeaking noise cominig from the engine... Then Having the 40k service done in May by APS and should get their Stage 1 remap at the same time...

Future mods include ITG Maxogen CAI, Milltek TBE, Twintercooler and Stage 2 map, with lots of suspension mods, coilovers, ARB's, UNibrace, bushes, TD pr1.2s etc...

Here she is now...

OK, so have had some luck...

VW agreed to replaced the water pump under warranty to fix the squeaking... along with thi sthey replaced the cambelt and tensioners... Also because the service light came on 1 month after owning the car I had a little moan, so they offered to give a complimentary service, a 40k/4 year one which got them to include spark plugs...

So she was all up together, but the service didn;t included brake fluid... So, have been in contact previously with APD Performance down here in Dorset about the service, before I knew i was getting it FOC, so got them to change the brake fluid to SuperBlue and put in a new air filter... as this wasn't part of the service ?!?! weird...

While she was there I had them put REVO stage 1 map on as they are Revo dealers, and boy has it transformed the car! Absolutely awesome...

This weekend I gave her another polish, but also was getting sick of the usual prob of rusty bells on the brake discs... so went from

too...

More to come...

Thanks to JKM Rolling Road day I was able to see what difference the Revo Stage 1 remap gave, Thanks APD Performance!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv108%2Fax_vts_dom%2F2011BHP.jpg&hash=7a08e73fabdfa5fd2dbfd2153404e07e2e63fc0c)

With that I'll need;
Uprated clutch
LSD

Thanks guys...

With summer round the corner I thought it was about time to give the car a decent detail...

Out comes the rotary polisher... Left work early to get the car washed, clayed and dried and in the garage... Thought i'd start tonight and finish off tomorrow, 1 rear quarter panel, 1 rear door and half the roof...

Some shots...

Are the led sidelights bright enough during the day to act as daytime running lights?  Also, do they look okay in the dark with the standard dipped/full (less white) lights?

Leds are noticeable, but not bright like drl's... Always like the idea of fitting drl into som standard headlights... You can get white looking bulbs that look ok with led sidelight bulbs... Think Mandy's are the best i've seen... non-xenon.

Some pics from todays clean...

Woohoo!! :jumpmove:

Booked in Thursday 21st June @JKM to have the APR pump installed with a new follower, BCS Stainless Sports exhaust mated to the Pipewerx 3"Downpipe, EVOMS intake fitted and the stage 2 map tweaked to suit... VERY excited...

Have also just put  a deposit down on some Scirocco R 345mm brakes to keep the extra power under reigns...

Good news Dom.

I've literally just got back from a trip to JKM for some tweaks  , and will be fitting my 345mm R32 brakes on Monday. Looks like we're (spookily) heading in the same direction following the last RR day.

Only minor difference is the K04 turbo in yours, which will make a minor difference I guess  :signLOL:

You heading up to inters next weekend?

Well after upping the power it was time to up the braking...

Purchased from Mr AKS, was a Scirocco R setup that came straight off a new car and he ran on his car for 10k, but came with new pads...

A quick machine polish and a couple of coats of poorboys wheel sealant et voila...

The brakes are bedding in nicely... don't believe I have full contact just yet of the new pads on the used disks, but getting there...

But, even now, they are flipping fantastic! Anyone that says they are happy with the standard gti brakes need to drive a set of bigger brakes, so much more confidence in them....  :notworthy:

Ok, revison G diverter valve fitted, and yes I would have to agree, feels alot stronger and responsive and seem to pull harder through the rev range than the D i had fitted, so happy I changed that.

Also going to fit the latest revision PCV, so I know that's up to spec. Booked in for a major service at JKM on the 8th September, so going to order some red coil packs for then to be fitted with the new spark plugs, so i know it's all uptogether...

Also have been offered some GAZ coilovers for a great price, with a discount due to being an previous customer(had their coilovers on two previous cars lol), so would be rude not to... These have shorter body length and stroke, adjustable rebound dampening, and can specify the spring rates and opt for helper springs too...

Along with these i'll probably order is it the TT-rs top mounts which are supposedly 30% stiffer...

Can't wait... 3 week build time as they are hand built.

I'll get a price from my usual part supplier so you have something to compare to

Post by: E30Dom on August 23, 2012, 06:41:01 pm

Ok after a bit of research I learnt a few more things about springs rates...

Taking the VWR kit and KW Clibsport kits which are 90-170 front and 70-170 rear, this relates to 90n/mm spring rate over free length of 170mm and rear being 70n/mm.

This equates to something 500lbs front and 400lbs rear, which after talking to David at GAZ was a stiff track setup, which the two kits quoted are...

So after some delving, and some help from Hassan at Awesome Gti, he came back with info from KW that the V3's have a spring rate of 50.56n/mm front and 44.17n/mm rear which equates to 285lbs Front/250lbs rear...

As I wanted a slightly stiffere set up between the two, I have gone with 365N/mm front and 310N/mm rear, which is some 20% up on the V3's but no where near as stiff as Clubsports...

David will set up a good window of damping adjustment around these spring rates.

Let the 3week build time commence! ;-)

Dom what would be the cost of me sending a set of V3 springs and having a set made to the same size but at a poundage between the V3 and clubsport?

Used coil springs in Rotherham near me years ago to make custom springs for Gaz dampers but can't remember how much they were.

Car is being serviced @JKM on Saturday morning, new spark plugs, filters, oil etc... Hopefully they are going to check the car over for any faults and check the Revo settings as I seem to still be getting a lot of soot deposits on the boot...

Along with this, I have ordered red coil packs which should brightne the bay a bit, and about to order the revision N PCV vlave and gasket...

Then I know she's totally up together for another 6-8k miles... :signLOL:

I'm not expecting them to say/do much about it, just think its the result of a high powered turbo car... Especially one with an apr pump on stage 2... Really want the Intercooler on and stage 2+, but saving for a house, 2nd baby due in 18 weeks and nursery fees just paid, gotta be careful...

Wanna get coilovers on first too...

Haha she knows what I'm like  :signLOL:

My 1st child was brought home in a very stiff V3'd R32, so only far I treat the 2nd child the same...

Back from JKM, dunno why but I always leave there with a sense of satisfaction and reassurance... All fully serviced... Jim logged the car and found no faults, has dropped the Fuel from F7 to F8, not that he thinks it's made much difference, all boost/and fuel was hitting requested throughout the rev range, no timing pull through the revs, he says it's running "Spot on!" and "feels like it has plenty of grunt" so I'm happy with that... :happy2:

Felt perfect on the steady drive home...

Oh and the red coil packs are fitted, seemed rude not to as they were changing the plugs... lol

Well the car is absolutely flying! I think with the fresh plugs/oil/fuel filter etc. and possibly the F7 to F8 tweak, it feels fantastically quick... Well happy!

Have just completed my mini project task on the car which was remove the wheels and remove each arch liner, and clean out the mud/leaves/stones/twigs that build up behind them... many years of AX ownership has taught me, mud holding damp against the paint constantly induces rust... so was keen to carry out this maintenance, which I will do yearly from now on...

Method was remove wheel, remove arch liner, dig out the compacted mud/leaves etc., thoroughly wash the underside of the arch with muc-off cleaner, and rinse off to ensure all mud was removed... dry. Wash/scrub the archliner inside and out and dry. Reft arch liner making sure it fits perfect(they fit quite poorly anyway!). Wash the wheel inside/out and refit... repeat at each corner...

This is majority of what I dug out from one arch...

Title: Re: E30Dom's Edition 30 - S3 Intercooler Install
Post by: E30Dom on October 06, 2012, 09:59:56 pm
OK today I have installed and S3 alloy intercooler, so I can go Stage 2+...

The APR guide is invaluable, just a few things;

The bottom screws for the grill are T20 not T25...
Think atep 19, the screws are T30 not T25...
Bag and label all screws, this is the best way to keep track...
Make sure the two prongs sit in the grommets and the top/side mounts slot in the cage and screws go in ok
The GTi hoses are easily modified with a hacksaw blade, cut in 3 places and bend back, take care so not to cut the rubber surface, if holding in a vice and cutting at the top, the alloy will split before going in to the rubber if you cut evenly...
Clean or replace the seal for the connector into the discharge pipe.
The inlet pipe hose goes straight on if you modify the pipes the way i did...
The discharge pipe hose needs to be trimmed to get the angle right, about 5mm off one side...
Found the slightest trace of oil in the hoses, but believe this is normal - as the lowest point off the system and oil vapours being drawn through it collects here.
Take your time, be methodical, tick off each step as you go, and note the APR is not so detailed on the refit stage.
The connectore plugs are easier to remove if you push them on first before pressed the clip.
This is a manageable one man job... I have proven that.

Some pics from the install...

Saftey first, car jacked up...

S3 cooler is a worthwhile upgrade.  :happy2:

Does whacking on an S3 intercooler potentially mean that you can run more timing?

Jabba Luke's (400bhp) ED30 was running an S3 Alloy intercooler, said it worked just fine  :happy2:, no need for expensive Twitter-coolers or THS-books

I wasn't questioning the S3 intercoolers function. I was just asking what benefits does it have? I.E. on a stage 1 car... would this be beneficial? Could the timing be increased?

I thought the s3 cooler was good on both my 2+ eddy and gti
Performance wise even without adjusting the settings you could feel like you had bolted something on that gave more you more power deffo worth doing and not just for a power point of view.

You are either:

1) - A geek who keeps written records of all our individual mods.

2) - A female because you remember every single word said or written.

Having said that, I have been grateful to you many times for being told about a mod to my car which I had forgotten!  :happy2:

What's better, any advice?

I would go stage 2 plus . Take the engine to its peak preformance on standard internals etc then all that is left is handiling mods (if wanted) and servicing you will be a happy bunny  :happy2:

....The temptation for more power is always very tempting and those who have Stage 2+ and are happy with it will doubtless encourage you.

Perhaps the most important considerations are that:

- Power is useless without traction. Time for a LSD to add to your handling package?

- The more you push the performance envelope, the more risk of unreliability or future problems. But I'm not saying that Stage 2+ isn't safe.

Ask advice from Jim @ JKM?

Are you down on the 20th then Red?

Yeah have the scirocco R set up which are brilliant!

Have asked JKM whats best, upload the latest stage 2+ map and set up, or upload the latest stage 2 map and set up, maybe gaining some more from higher boost/timing settings...

I wanna be running reliably the best set up for the hardware, then I can concentrate on suspension next year...

....I think you missed reading the '?' (now in bold) when I suggested that Dom might consider also asking advice from Jim @ JKM. I think that JKM know Dom's car and their knowledge and expertise is such that it may be helpful to ask. I certainly have asked JKM about some mods before doing them - I value their opinions more than I do from most individuals on a car forum.

Jim at JKM set the Revo Stage 2+ map up a treat, settings B8T5F8 and it's holding 1.4bar all the way to redline at 70% duty cycle... Unfortunately no power graph as I was too tight... so will have to wait to the next RR day...

OK... the last few weeks I've noticed my fuel consumption increase and the idle get ever so irratic, not at all bad, but thought I'd swap the PCV valce just as a precaution...

One revision 'F' PCV valve removed and new Revision 'N' Valve and new gasket replaced, and have a sweet idle, it pulls through the revs smoother and the consumption is back on track... Sorted :happy2:

Once happy bunny... All the latest revision parts fitted now, full Stage2+ hardware, Revo Stage 2+ software with B8T5F8, sub 5 degree temperatures and the Edition 30 is running spot on!

Bad news is, it's coming up to new Tyres time... I thought bloody hell, only put the Conti Sport Contact 5's on New Years Eve! But then realised I have done about 17k miles!

So looking at either Michelins or Goodyears... :scared:

Method was remove wheel, remove arch liner, dig out the compacted mud/leaves etc., thoroughly wash the underside of the arch with muc-off cleaner, and rinse off to ensure all mud was removed... dry. Wash/scrub the archliner inside and out and dry. Reft arch liner making sure it fits perfect(they fit quite poorly anyway!). Wash the wheel inside/out and refit... repeat at each corner...

I noticed a load of leaves in the front of my doors of my ED30.  I'm tempted to do this at the weekend.  I'd never thought about the rust possibilities.....

Did you do the rears also?

The collection of parts have started...

A delivery from AKS Tuning arrived today... :jumpmove: (Only ordered Tuesday and Alex had to order in, now that's service! :notworthy:)

-Vibratechnics Lower Subframe Mount
-Vibratechnics small dog-bone mount
-SuperPro front wishbone bushes

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv108%2Fax_vts_dom%2F148A2BD0-512D-4ACF-A64D-1CF243A7A775-715-000000B06BED54AF-3.jpg&hash=fda072aea708c85197678b91c9a5b6c2279133a4)

Decided to go without the SALK bush for now as only had S3 solid console bushes in at the end of 2011 when the clutch was done. Will replace as and when.

Also have the subframe bolt & Spacer kit to go on, but everything will go on when the coilover & ARB's are purchased...

A quick Microsoft paint to visualise what it will look like once lowered on all this kit...

What a day...

In for its MOT today, knew the rear pads were really low so opted to have replaced along with an oil service/inspection... Phone call later in the morning to say one of the rear calipers has seized... So a bit more labour... Total a £300 bill...

I also asked them to log the car to check fueling, boost and timing... Happy to report, hitting all specified figures and zero timing pull across the board... Reckon I could up the settings a little till the warmer months come back...

All in all, bit of a shocker, but glad she's all ready for another years motoring... And all my suspension mods! ;-)

Insurance looming in March...

I take it they were direct fit ? I think I read the tt were stiffer aswell but in reality were not, let us know how they are once fitted or once you've compared to the oem mounts.

Is the bearing bigger on these ( outer )

Title: Re: E30Dom's Edition 30 - GAZ Pics! ;-)
Post by: E30Dom on February 26, 2013, 05:33:01 pm
OK, so buying GAZ probably wasn't the safest route to go, they're not well known in VAG tuning circles, they're a small company based in Basildon Essex, but having had they're products before, I knew they were superb and worked very well... would have been easy to buy an off the shelf option from KW, Bilstein etc, but my budget wouldn't allow and I want adjustable damping...

So after waiting 3.5 weeks, the excitement was tarnished last night when unwrapping them from the packaging...

The fronts came out and looked superb, with the 40lb helper springs, platform adjusters, bumpstops etc...

The I opened the rears, the shocks looked fine but the springs looked odd, then were 7" long 2.25"Diameter springs, later find out these a linear springs, fair enough, but looked too short and no platform for height adjustment.... fears and concerns started... each of the GAZ stickers were starting to peel, like if someone had dirty fingers when placing them...

All the c-spanners and tools were there also...

I then tried offering up the front springs to the top mount bearings and the spring cup wouldn;t go into the spring, like the ID of the spring was too small...

So, here's me panicking, wishing I'd paid £100 more for the AP APX versions...

So I wrote to GAZ immediately...

Today there are sending me new rear springs, platforms and spanners, and four new stickers... and they assure me under load the spring will seat itself into the bearing...

So hopefully all sorted... Can;t wait to get fitted now... More pics later.

Dom

Unfortunately they're having to go back... I'm having too many fitment issues to have confidence in them. It's a shame as they are very nicely made, but the springs have let them down. The ID of the front springs just doesn't fit the oem top mount bearing and the helper springs are rendered useless as fully compressed even on lowest setting...

Just about to order some AP APX adjustable coilovers instead.

Care to explain how this is then rich?...

It doesn't Robin.. There are too many other variables to consider, one of which is the dyno  :signLOL:  :popcornsoda:

Hot air temperature dueing spring / summer or warm days is when an intercooler helps engine cooling and Sustained power output,
On a typical cold winters day, it's not gonna make the blindest bit of difference, and show on a dyno, that already has too many other variables as was proven yesturday

Only thing different is the surface area of a radiator Dom, it's a larger version, that is all, allows for faster cooling when air temperatures are higher then on a day like yesturday.
Title: Re: E30Dom's Edition 30
Post by: E30Dom on March 03, 2013, 09:34:10 pm
No. There is a less pressure drop across a THS/APR intercooler than a GTi/s3 intercooler, meaning the turbo has to work less hard to meet the specified boost...
Title: Re: E30Dom's Edition 30
Post by: Saintsteve on March 03, 2013, 10:11:19 pm
The actual power gain from an efficient intercooler design over OEM is typically between 4% and 8% with a temperature drop of 35C-40C and this will obviously depend on the ambient temperature - the bigger the difference between intake temp and ambient temp the better the cooling effect.
As a general rule of thumb a slightly bigger intercooler will have better cooling properties although it usually creates more drag.  This extra drag needs be carefully weighed up against the cooling offered. The longer the air is inside the intercooler the better the cooling effect will be.
In other words, not much that can be accurately measured on a rolling road from this weekend and cold temps.

So you're telling me a car that made 309bhp on stage 2 on a standard GTi I/C on a 22deg day on B8T5F7 should only make 9bhp extra on stage2+ with an uprated I/C on a 6deg day with settings B8T6F8!? Same rollers.

Maybe I should have gone Superchips...  :P

Exactly what I thought, it is supposed to cool the charged air... it's not cooling ambient air.

I don't think there is any doubt that an aftermarket intercooler is of benefit when driving enthusiastically on very hot summer days (remember them?) and of course on trackdays.

What I was uncertain about was their benefit on the rollers - What added bhp numbers might be gained as a direct result in that particular context.

Has anyone done back-to-back dyno sessions without and then with an aftermarket intercooler?
Title: Re: E30Dom's Edition 30

Dom, did you ever dyno the car on stage 2+ before fitting the IC?

I can't say I've noticed any significant gains since fitting my IC. I didn't think IC's were supposed to 'give' you any power gains, just helps prevent loss of any ponies due to heat and other conditions. However, I would say 318bhp does seem a bit low for your car with your mods. :sad1:

No unfortunately not... The I/C was added then it went stage 2+... I thought it felt stronger on stage 2 with the I/C added, may just be placebo...

Yeah, thought Stage2+ was supposed to give more, was certainly under that impression...

The AFR is flat at 12.4 on F8, reckon it would help to go F7 to bring it closer to 12.0 or as Leaner=faster keep it as it is...

Don't forget that Revo have revised all their K04 codes.

So were you on new Stage 2 before going 2+ or was it the old Stage 2 and you now have the revised 2+ code?

Go back to stage 2 if you think it was better. You're not the first person to dislike Stage 2+ and also see no big difference from Stage 2.

I couldn't remember, just had to look back at my graphs lol... It made 313bhp with OEM pump, then months later made 319bhp with APR pump. Revised to the newer map the same day and made 312.8bhp.

I think people's 'lower than expected' figures may have something to do with the newer revised sedated Revo maps. Seems like a few of us may be comparing the older more aggressive maps to the newer more sedated ones.

Graeme, do you think your figures seem about right for your stock car?

Yeah I think your right - I'm sure Dom can relate to this too?

Yeah my car feels every bit 172.5bhp, one thing I've realised is the Rocco makes the same torque on JKM's as my GTI did on JKM's at Stage one  :surprised:

Mandy, no worries... I appreciate everyone's input...

I'm aware Regal are probably going to over read, but gonna give something to gauge... Maybe can take an average lol...

VAS Works were very surprised by the result, they think its alot stronger than the results gave...

A clever man said to me today, ignore the dyno results...

I have a whole host of suspension goodies going on that with the power this car has is gonna make a superb all round package...

Would be interested in other people's stage 2+ maybe I should post on all relevant forums...

have to remember it is not about peak, it is about everything under the graph.  You might find you have made 40bhp mid range where you would notice it.

I wouldn't be too concerned - this is JKM's dyno after all.

Back in October, at the JKM RR day, my car made 320bhp (Revo Stage 3) and Justin's Stg 2+ Ed30 made 322bhp.

As others have said, the feel and way the car drives is much more important than peak power on a RR. If you need a boost, take a trip over this way to AmD - you'll easily hit 360-370 bhp  :happy2:

Ok, let's get back on track... It's got plenty of power! ;-)

So lets go for a more complete package... Suspension time!

So far the only suspension upgrade is a UNIbrace, and even though you can feel the difference it's not till you update the suspension components you feel full effect...

These arrived in the post yesterday courtesy of AKS Tuning, which I purchased off Mike_TFSI... Thanks guys! To add to my huge pile of other bits...

Oh you bite so easy :signLOL:

3 Revo cars, running new code and all 3 ran less then the old code.. Mandy's stage 2 run 7bhp less, dawain's 2+Car and of course Doms 2+ car.

Find me someone that's had the new code running higher Bhp??!!.. :popcornsoda:

Not that bhp figures mean anything as it means diddly squat IMHO

Perhaps the old code, the  Revo figures were aimed at peak figures, and now the Revos new gen maps are better to drive, with less up top and better midrange.

You can't have both, you have to loose one or the other.

What I don't understand is, why do Revo's map have such a diversity, ie, you can mess around with timing, fuelling etc, and still have some cars set on these settings and others set on other settings at the same stage of tune.. JKM setting cars at those settings and reading Revo on Facebook today, saying the polar opposite?

Hopefully recovering from my bike accident, though slow and long process it seems... but to start preparing it for a visit to R-Tech...
Larger THS intercooler fitted with the a/c condenser rad which normally sits in front removed.

Once the Nology plugs and oil service are carried out, it will go to R-Tech for a full health check and 2-3 day live map session...

Are you sticking around to watch Nick map it? It's great to see him fiddling around with the map right in front of your eyes and he always explains what he is doing and the effect it will have.  :notworthy:

My brain was fried after an afternoon of Nick Gower tech-talk  :signLOL:

Don't worry it ain't going anywhere soon, Missus won't allow... So new rear discs, pads, handbrake cables, caddy 2k rear calipers and some gloss black high temp paint... To sort the rear out... ;-)
