Title: Golf GT TDi
Post by: vRS_Pagey on July 27, 2011, 09:53:00 am
Previously posted in the General forum but I thought I would move it over here........

Well after nearly a year of hunting and some sound advice both here and on the Briskoda forum we have finally found a Golf GT to replace swmbo's Focus (the work horse) the car not swmbo!

The vehicle spec:

2007MY Golf GT Tdi PD140, Graphite Blue Pearl, 44k, 1 owner from new with a fvwsh.
Standard equipment includes auto on lights, rain sensitive wipers, auto dimmer rear view mirror, electric windows front and rear, electric/heated wing mirrors.
Optional extras - MFD2 DVD Sat Nav with ipod prep, highline display, centre armrest, electric slide and tilt sunroof.

So anyway, we left home yesterday and around 1.5 hours and 100 miles later we arrived at the sellers, although the car looked good the only way I can describe it is 'neglected' the owner has been using his new car since January leaving the Golf to his son who was doing between 10-20 miles a week.  Looking beyond the accumulated kak, the bodywork was tidy, and structurally it seemed sound.  On to the test drive - a stage 1 vRS it ain't but tbh, its not to shabby, I ran through the various checks recommended by members and all seemed fine (no strangled owls under the bonnet).  When we got back to the guys place he handed my a document wallet which contained every receipt/invoice since he originally purchased the car.  This included an invoice from the stealers for a cam belt change in February!   :happy2:

After a cuppa and a chat with his son about KW Coilovers and the vRS etc   :drinking:   we began negations, to be fair for the condition, mileage and spec it was cheap but hey ho when in Rome...........

.........2nd offer excepted and he threw in a nearly new set of Thule 754 aero roof bars.  :)

Ok enough talking, below are the pictures before and after a bit of TLC.

So far so good, well happy with it.

What’s next?
During the clean up today I removed the mud flaps, never been a fan and esthetically I think it looks far better without them, changed the standard halogen bulbs for a set of Ring Xenon Max (previously in the vRS).
Imminent - replacement headlights with black inners (ordered) gloss black wrap for the grille area, GTi rear silencer, a GTi front and rear valance and side skirts which will be colour coded.  Last but not least a remap!

That is possibly the dirtiest engine bay I have ever seen in a MK5.
Bet you felt so good once it was all cleaned up?!

Some additonal modding, including fitting a colour coded rear GTi valance (painted professionally), GTi front splitter (painted in the comfort of my garage) and finally a bit of wrapping for the B pillars to spice them up.  :happy2:

Tbh the pictures of the splitter don't do it justice, suffice to say I will be DIY painting the side skirts when they land.....

Next on the agenda, get hold of the GTi lower insert for the splitter which I will be painting gloss black along with the lower part of the rear valance.  :happy2:

*on another note, you say you have ordered GTI headlights with black inserts? If so where from because I'm after a standard set of them too & can only find some on E-Bay, but they all look fake to me :(

You have just missed out on an OE set (on different auctions) on the bay, used but apparently mint, each went for less than a 50 quid.

I am sorry to say I have gone for copies, but apart from them not having the VW logo (which is pretty special) over the bulb they are as good as OE, made by Hella.  Only got 1 so far, paid £33 inc del and you can't tell the difference......

Thanks mate, the 'B' pillars are wrapped in gloss vinyl, I had a bit left over from doing the front grille.  :happy2:

Today has been a quieter one, all I've managed so far is to fit LED number plate bulbs and chrome indicator bulbs.

Update:

Finally got the exhaust sorted, my mechanic did a great job, but being Mr.OCD I wasn't 100% happy with the alignment of the exhaust trims and also they stuck out a bit far, so after an hour an a half of work which included completely removing the bumper to get a grinder on the pipes he welded on, here is the result........

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FDSC04710.jpg&hash=f06abd8cc586874c2aaf7b4b4ea96896c654bcde)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FDSC04711.jpg&hash=2940ac880955f66a50428fa24e5606389ffbcd5c)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FDSC04709.jpg&hash=9ea4e8265ac674a4b9a4ee7221b2b0441190e27d)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FDSC04712.jpg&hash=ebd31fb8472d1e652e8b4311516411b7916cf138)

I think it looks good and definitely passes for OE but I am still on the hunt for an genuine Tsi/Tdi/Gti back box for the true OE finish (unless a performance one crops up).

  I can be a nightmare with things like that, tbh I'm still not 100% convinced, I keep going out and adjusting it a fraction!  :rolleye: It's been cleverly done though, basically my mechanic has welded a length of pipe to the standard back box then added a bridging piece with a shorter length of pipe running parallel, this is what the trims are then screwed to.  The functionality is still there with one outlet feeding in to the new pipe and the other expelling as before.   :happy2:

Edit:  Forgot to add the picture of the rear badge, just added a bit of gloss black vinyl to refresh the tired grey inserts -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FIMAG0384.jpg&hash=71fcad606d1d987cc156a9f7d940b5ffdf8d719d)

I've also had the rear brake discs and pads changed, painted silver hammerite around the edge and on the bell/hub prior to fitting.  No pictures though as it's a bit boring....... :indifferent:

I haven't got round to ordering the skirts yet, I was going to wait and get the GTi lower splitter insert to save doing 2 journeys to TPS.

The part numbers I have which are for both 3 and 5 door (confirmed by TPS previously) are:
Left skirt - 1K4 853 859 B9B9
Right skirt - 1K4 853 860 B9B9
4 x Adaptors - 1K0 853 493
4 x Screws - N10354602

I will be colour coding the skirts myself and painting the splitter insert gloss black along with the lower part of the GTi rear valance.  If I have enough paint I will also remove the vinyl from the front grille and paint that.  :happy2:

The GT and GTi have essentially the same front bumper and lower splitter, the GTi does however have a centre section that inserts in to the front at the bottom.  What I did realise though is that when I changed my splitter (original was damaged) I ordered the GTi one and this has fixing points running along the centre of it, I think the lower insert will still fit a standard GT but perhaps the install will be more fiddly.

The part number for the insert is: 1K0 807 110 9B9 approx' 40 quid with VAT.

Fitted my dash top vent today, well happy I think it makes the space looks 100% better.  :happy2:
A big thanks to demon666 for finding it on the bay. :drinking:

Just need to get a sunlight sensor to fill the gap at the back.

Also cleaned up the rear calipers and painted them gloss black, no pictures but they look much better, hope to do the fronts tomorrow (weather permitting) will post some before and after shots.

Lol @ you both.  It does look like a speaker I will give you that, but it is actually a vent, I think it is standard equipment in the GTi but not the GT, at least not all of them.  The tray I replaced it with has a blanking plate to block the vent, with this installed it reduces the flow when set to the occupants which makes for a much more pleaseant and temperant experience.  :happy2:

Thinking about it, its probably fitted to all cars which have the climatronic A/C.

Post by: dodds-gttdi on August 20, 2011, 10:02:49 pm
The vent wasn't standard on many cars. I think the early GT and GTI's came with the 10-speaker set up (not the 6 you get now) and that included the big one above the centre of the dash. The scroll on the front of it is for a vent, but it comes up at the front, right next to the windscreen.

I have an early ('54 plate) GT which came with all the pre-cost cutting goodies: metal glovebox handle, no roof aerial and a ten speaker system. Will try and get pictures up tomorrow in the daylight.

Nice colour car mate, glad to see your treating her well. :-)

The vent part is within the area I've marked, when I fitted the unit I can say for sure there is no room for a speaker either in the unit or the space it goes into.

Title: Re: Golf GT TDi
Post by: vRS_Pagey on August 22, 2011, 06:16:06 pm
I did think about doing them red as the front calipers are indentical to the GTi/vRS, but I want to keep this car as low key and subtle as possible.  In my youth I modded a lot of cars and most of them had a 'moody' feel, which I really like.  :happy2:

My vRS is a good example -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FvRS%2FDSC02827a-1.jpg&hash=0e2bbcfdff3a2694bee2cdf2be6b3046b425ccb8)

Tbh it was quite easy using a no.10 flat artist brush and a bit of patience, I didn't mask anything up, just removed the retaining clip.  The most difficult part was balancing the umbrella on the garage door as it starting pishing down half way through.

Darkside Developments EGR delete kit arrived Saturday -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FDSC04765.jpg&hash=96891c40675f7211f7ded95d25f859ed1f65c38c)

Had a spare couple of hours last night so I had a crack at fitting it.  Not as easy as it looks, especially when trying to undo the bolt at the back of the unit, space is extremely limited.  But after a lot of patience, success -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FDSC04773.jpg&hash=ff5b183eb829cf79618b20336a235bf5e4f0b22a)

I OE valve was a bit crusty but not as bad as some I've seen -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fpagey1255%2FGolf_GT%2FDSC04777.jpg&hash=ecb0d657675e28a1a06914165db73edd9dffb40e)

First impressions, the car doesn't feel as sluggish when pulling away and no CEL.........yet.

My is only the PD140.

During the first 20-30k the EGR will perform efficently, but when they get clogged up with crud (like mine) it can affect performance and economy due mainly to restricted air flow.  You could remove your EGR and soak it in petrol or carb cleaner, then refit it.   But it will get caked again, with the delete pipe in place you get a smoother air flow which will stop the nastiness.......

It definitely has improved throttle response and pick up, I can't comment on mpg as I uploaded a Shark remap tonight which will improve it anyway.

That's a the vacuum hose which is no longer required when the delete pipe is installed so it just gets blanked with one of the spare bolts.   :happy2:

At this stage it is just a photoshop mock up, but I will be ordering the lights in the next few weeks.  I've had them fitted on the vRS for a couple of years now and I personally think they look very OE.  Wiring is actually quite simply, on the Octavia negative goes to the - side of the battery, positive goes to position #1 on the headlight plug and the yellow controller wire #10 iirc (easy to find out though).  With the controller wire attached the drl's will go out when the dipped beam comes on.  The biggest job was modifying the grill inserts to fit the lights flush with the bumper.  One other thing I did was wrap them in smoke tint Lamin-X film, so when they are off you can hardly notice them, which I like.

For the Golf I will get another set of lower grilles and play with old ones.  I've just received confirmation from the supply that they will work with auto lights which I wasn't sure about.  Once I have completed the fit I will give you further details, and a 'how to' guide if you want?  :happy2:

If you were going down an OEM+ external retrofit DRL route Pagey, for me it would have to be the OEM Audi S6 DRL's that I think you can just about pull off on the Mk5 R32/Mk5 GT. Jake (danishmkvgti) was very recently selling a set on here for a more than a fair price  :happy2:

If I had a front grille setup suitable, I'd have gone down that route myself.
You may not like them, nor may others, but I think they look dead smart and will perhaps suit it better than the others you've tried which maybe don't work on the Mk5 as much as they do the VRS?

They're obviously more or less a Volkswagen part too and should be very reliable.
There's a couple of sets on ebay.de on most days. Avoid the Audi dealers directly as I think they're £400+ for a set.

If they fit then the bottom grill slot may work on yours?

With a bit of grill modifications I'm sure you probably could dude  :happy2:
They do look smart in either the top grill slot or lowest slot.

I think most .:R's have them in the bottom one as it's an easier mod, not because it's not necessarily possible to amend the other end of the grill surrounds?

It would look very OEM+ which is my cuppa tea and you couldn't be accused of them looking tacky or bling.

I am a sucker for the S6 DRL's just wish the GTi had grilles that would suit them! Oh well :( R.E. Factory built ones there is some on eBay, not exactly like above but a quick search -

If it was a vote I would be thinking RS6 wheels which is why they look quite far out of the arch, and they do look like the Golf R wheels.

Looking good  :happy2: what else do you have planned?

I have an OE GTi back box coming, and possibly a downpipe with decat.  I will be having a go at tinting the rear lights for the R32/ED30 look.  GTi skirts which I will colour code myself and a GTi spoiler insert, which I plan on spraying gloss black along with the lower part of the rear valance.  Minor things which have already been completed, Lockwood S/S sill plates and LED interior lighting (I will add some pictures later).

Beyond that I will divert my attention back to the vRS to go stage 2 and also looking at R32 brakes so the 312mm set up be a straight swap to the Golf.  :happy2:

Quick comparison picture of the headlights -

Pagey don't put the lockwood sill plates on if you at the state of my sills after I took them off you would not even consider it...my sills where actually rusting and I had bare metal after I took them off and the paint came off with it.

They just collect water underneath and sit there damp all the time :sad1: look good but not the best solution, I'm just going to buy some carbon vinyl and do some of my own sill covers.

Just a small addition, fitted an OE GTi back box earlier today (thanks to JackG for supplying).  Had a bit of a problem in that the adaptor pipe I ordered was 64mm to 54mm, but the OE pipe work bulged very slightly at the fixing point to 55mm, so I had to bodge it a bit until a new connector arrives next week.

Tbh it doesn't look that different to the trims I had fitted previously, but I am much happier having the real thing on there.  :happy2:

Apologies for the state of the car, it will be receiving a serious clean later today.

I was waiting for someone to ask about those.  They're just reflective tape cut to shape, at the minute they are a bit to light but I have a 2nd pair that will be getting tinted when I do the rear lights.  It is a standard GTi bumper.

Yup, just spent the morning and most of the afternoon cleaning them, (household products and nasty chemicals from the garage) then a blast with the random orbit sanding before filling the damaged areas.  Tbh if it all goes horribly wrong I was going to pay for the refurb anyway, if it works a few hundred quid saved!  :happy2:

Just done a quick photoshop of the Golf with Zeniths, the jury is still out, opinions welcome -

I've been thinking long and hard, and have decided to do the Zeniths in anthracite, it just means a bit more work painting the insides.

It's been a while since I last posted on this, mainly as the vRS has been receiving some treatment, namely S3 front brakes, Milltek downpipe with sport cat and Shark stage 2 software......

Things have been quiet with the Golf but I have now made a few additions.  I recently got a set of GTi side skirts, lower spoiler insert from another member, I also got my hands on a complete GTi brake set up also from another member, this was manily so I could have the vRS rear brakes refurbished to match the S3 fronts, but as I had them I thought it would be rude not to upgrade the GT to 312mm fronts.  Anyway, the spoiler insert was a 5 minute job and makes the front look a lot better, I haven't got any pictures but I'm sure people know what they look like.  With the skirts I really wanted them coded to match the front and rear spoiler and valance, so I attacked them with my random orbit sander to knock back the texture, then gave them a couple of coats of plastic primer, two of the colour and three of clear coat, I then wet sanded with 2000 grit and run two passes with the machine polisher, very happy with the results -

Any pics of the splitter insert and did you just use the clips and bond the skirts on or use the support rail also? john

I didn't bother taking pictures of the insert as it's just a bog standard GTi one, the only difference is I colour coded the lower spoiler.  I can do though?

I fitted the skirts as per the GTi, apart from the support rails, screws back and front, 4 x adaptors that fit in existing holes in the sills, and double sided foam tape along the top.  I did it like this in case swmbo turns around in a week and tells me to take them off because she doesn't like them!!  :scared:

So far so good!

Seems I spoke to soon, one of the skirts is trying to escape......

Edit:  Fingers crossed, all sorted!  :popcornsoda:

Imo, they look soooo much better.

Those look great! I need to do this to mine, how did you take the bumper off? I'm assuming by what I've seen that there is a screw for the lamp hidden behind the bumper?

There is a mount for the lamp behind the bumper, you can see the tab sticking out on mine before I fit them in this post (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,79540.msg838760.html#msg838760).
Removing the bumper isn't too difficult, just a load of screws around the arches, underneath and a couple under the grille. Just make sure you get the sides aligned in the mounting brackets when refitting.
