Title: What drop do you have on your MK5 GT/GTi?
Post by: AjayB on October 31, 2011, 06:47:59 pm
I have a little problem with my Golf Mk5 Gt Tdi, its been lowered by 35mm with H&R springs but now its scraping on anything and everything.. even on uneven road surfaces im getting contact. I didn't think this amount of drop would cause problems? anyone else having/had these issues?

The box and product code on the box match up to 35mm, will the springs have the drop marked on them? (I.e 35mm or 45mm).. might have to get one of the springs off to check..

Cheers, Ajay

I've got the H&R 35mm springs on mine and it doesn't scrape on anything. What size wheels do you have? If they are quite small with a low profile, that would be your problem :scared:

These are the best pictures i have so far, i'll take some more clear ones tomorrow. For the size of the wheels i am running 18's.. this scraping is getting hard to live with tbh  :sad1: Bare in mind the last picture is parked on the slight lift on the path on the passenger side but only small as you can see..

what's scraping mate the wheels? Are they the correct offset? You're car doesn't look that low that it would make contact with the road....

That'd be a good start if it's scraping on the front  :happy2:

On the front arches there is a screw holding the plastic liner to the metal arch take the screw out and fold the plastic back a fraction, I also bent the metal tab out of the way.

If you feel or look under the front arches you'll see the screw

dropped 35mm and the gt-tdi is lower then the 1.9 as standard, yet my car with 40mm looks lower sat on 15" steelies, ( not car lower , arch gap lower/less )

how can that be right unless i am mistaken!!

either way,  unless you have strangely wide wheels with a crazy offset, i wouldn't expect rubbing, seeing as GTI models came with 18" alloys (i think) so your car running 18" should be - no problemo!

I'm thinking of just removing the 18's and the springs and going back to the original setup as its really annoying me :( cant quite find what the problem is... Awesome GTI said they think the shockers might need upgrading to some better ones but i dont want to spend that much money on the suspension just yet.. i even removed a little bit of the front undercarriage when it was down at Awesome to get the remap. These wheels atm are 18x8 ET45.

What is scraping, the tyres in the arch when turning or the bottom of the car on the road or even the tyres in the arch when driving straight?

Fella whats exactly scraping?

Does it Scrape over speed bumps? When Turning your wheels? With weight in the back?

Mines dropped around 60mm all round... Running 9J rears.. ET35... and ive got no scraping...

Most likey the the plastic undertray.. seems to have two protruding plastic edges either side that usually catch on raised road surfaces... Ive just sanded them down..

To be honest i think it probably will be the undertray.. lined it up against my mates gti today and it looks as if my undertray is hanging rather low! Seems to be scraping on the left side more that the right though :S Happens over speed humps anything over 5mph and on uneven road surfaces.. i still need to do the screw mod under the front wing as i don't know if its rubbing slightly on that also when i hit uneven road surfaces.. If it is the undertray, should i replace it? or just remove it and leave it without one

Don't give up mate, you will find the cause! Maybe get the car up on some ramps and have a look. The undertray might have come loose and is hanging down scraping the road.
