Title: My GTI. Brake upgrade.
Post by: N13SCB on November 17, 2011, 10:18:21 pm
Just eventuallly managed to join this forum, iv been trying for weeks to get the letter code when registering  :surprised: Looks like there are some very nice cars about on here  :happy2:

Here is my very small project thread that I had started in the summer....

After 8 months waiting on a new car I have eventually landed a replacement for my mk4:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy114%2Fekjim%2FPicture2239.jpg&hash=6ff0af3cd73aaee2c82a4d3fc669de7039da9c7e)

I had wanted a mk5 as a replacement but for various reasons after going to view at least 8 golfs I had to wait until two weeks ago to get one. I had decided I wanted grey and I couldnt believe how hard it was to get one. This had appeared for sale in Norfolk and I decided to go for it. This is what I got after a 16 hour round trip

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy114%2Fekjim%2FPicture2780.jpg&hash=60ee0ab06d4895889190218532f56d1e13fbb5c8)

I got back from Portugal yesterday and spent all day cleaning and adding my very first small mods...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy114%2Fekjim%2FPicture2781.jpg&hash=772e2021a30e1f1f48b870978310a402032c8c4d)

I bought scents as well   a wheel whores freshener and this...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy114%2Fekjim%2FPicture2784.jpg&hash=470e0eb5c2cc8b0ed528f0158865daef1c0adb9b)

After my day polishing I went out with a friend and his golf for some picture whoring, he is a far better photographer than me!

The car has since had a stage 1 map but it has never actually worked, the p0299 code is present and no specialist has a clue why yet!

Cheers,

Stu.

Thanks for the comments  :happy2:

Im going to a specialist on wednesday about the map, if that goes to plan some springs are next on order to tidy things up again. After looking about some of the golfs on here I think R32/S3 brakes are also coming in the neat future!

One of the best mods I have done. I just love em  :pomppomp:

Thanks, I had heard this off of a few people.

Thats me just purchesed a set, hopefully will get them by the weekend

Do spacers add to the look at all or is it best left standard?

Cheers, Stu.

Looking good lad.. Cant wait to see the car when you get the H&R in
Where abouts did you get that car scents stuff? How does it work?

Cheers Stuart!

TBH mate your car will look awesome with the H&R's  :notworthy:

I looks amazing already but lowered with H&R's is how VW should have made em in the first place!
I remember picking mine up after having em fitted at a local Indy, I was grinning like a Cheshire cat for days. Looked better than I expected.
Perfect stance for me anyway

I think the spacers would make a difference but I'm not sure if it would be enough to make me do it!
I'd rather buy alloys with a better offset to achieve the look!

It's like when u see the Pescaras next to the BBS VZ's.
Side by side the Pescaras are very nice (I've got em) but the stance of the VZ's look Soooo much bettererer

Again, VW should have used the VZ wheel specs!

Love the Golf in Steel Grey. My fave colour, tried 2 find one when I was looking for a GT but opted for my silver one because of how mint it was. Some nice mods, looking at H&R's myself. Any idea what they would be like with the 50mm drop?

alright buddy loving the car identical to mine and ive only just got mine aswell  :jumping: so im buzzing like you? ive done little mods and the next thing is lowering i was thinking 35mm but dont know wether it is to much, do you have problem with rubbing? how close is the arch to the tyre?
Title: Re: My GTI.

Thanks again  :happy2:

Well I bought 35mm but in all honesty it looks more like 25-30 I think, there are no rubbing issues whatsoever. They make the car feel so much more solid on the road, I would definetly recommend  :happy2:

I really don't know why people always mention rubbing???

My H&R's have settled now and lowered the car about 40mm. I have 19" alloys and even with the car full I've never had any rubbing !!!

Also I'm sure the H&R springs are advertised with different info on different websites. Some say they lower 35mm some say 50mm.
I think you will find they all lower the same though as they are the same springs. H&R state the car will be lowered between 35-50mm.
Don't go thinking that if u order springs from one place that say 35mm drop that you are getting different springs to the places saying 50mm!

The latest update on the car is that me stage 1 attempt is now complete.

Since my budget remap  the car has never ran how I wanted it to and has never made any more power than standard. Eventually, after changing every turbo related valve on the car, its beggining to feel a bit better! The car spent a couple of days at sitech racing last week to be checked over one last time for stage 1 and to be put on the rollers to find out whats happening power wise.

I couldnt talk higher of the service that I got from Simon at sitech, heres his demo car, just short of 530bhp

And the golf on arrival, with my better halfs corsa that followed me there and back!

And the results...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy114%2Fekjim%2FDSCI0117-1.jpg&hash=993fe2ffd352f3071686a4e23eab79ab287c3be1)

I got told by sitech that the 231bhp that my car made was as good as my map would allow and for what it is, the engine is doing everything its told to do. Does this curve look ok? Its now stage 2 revo next after a turbo back exhuast  :happy2:

Cheers, Stu.

tbh thats not the best power/torque curve ive seen by a long shot. Plus the figures are pretty low considering the Dastek rollers normally give inflated figures.  The torque on a stage 1 should be easily around 260lbft and nice and smooth, yours has a big torque spike that only just manages to peak at 224lbft which is really low.

Might be worth checking your diverter valve to see if it has a small tear thats releasing boost(thus power/torque)

They really arent to smooth, the car was checked and this curve has been put down to a dodgy map.

The strange thing is my dv has been changed to a piston type already and the car on a boost gauge makes 16psi with no signs of leakage or spiking ?

Does this sound right?

Might be worth looking into a swap tbh.  Go for one of the VAG specialists IMO.  Plenty of them sponsor this forum.  You dont have to spend a wedge either, as plenty of them make commendable remaps at half the price of the top tuners

Thanks mate,

I was taking the car to specialists around glasgow and they were at first producing a p0299 fault code - boost pressure not reached. Since i changed the MAFM this code has disappreared and it has not showed up again on vagcom on the rollers at sitech or when he was driving it.

The car still feels flat to drive at the bottom end and Sitech advised that a good map, i.e revo would sort this and release a lot more power.

Hopefully that will be my next step in the near future.

Are there any other common areas for a boost leak other than the dv? Incase one has went un-noticed?

Thanks, Stu.

map wise

PTprque
APR
REVO
Jabbasport
PDT
RTec

etc are all very well renowned maps on here all producing neigh on identical figures at vastly differing prices.

The only two there who differ are APR and REVO whos maps are switchable whereas the others are fixed

Slight performance update  :signLOL:

Had the golf up at the REVO vag vs ford day yesterday at crail. Still unchanged with the suspect 230hp map and in honesty the car struggled. All day I was having an absolute nightmare getting the car off the line, I eventually managed to get down to a 15.2 at 95.9mph. This was with a 1200rpm launch, it was the only one I tried like that, maybe another go would have seen a 14?

I dont know if any others were struggling as much on the line?

Anyway some pre crail and track pics taken by a mate  :happy2:

Iv just added another touch under the bonnet before my next remap ( hopefully next weekend if I get the time off ). Quite liked the sound of this mod, I wasnt having to much problems with my PCV but was advised that with a correct map a BSH one is an improvement.

It was easy to fit, I reckon there was an hour in it at the very most.

The only noticable difference is the car idles smoother, I think with a new map though it will hopefully help things along a bit.

Eventually.... I have the best update since I have owned this car

If you have noticed any of the updates I've been putting on various different parts of this build thread and throughout the forum, you will notice my ongoing problem I've been having  with the car lacking the power that I felt it should have had.

Yesterday, my Dad gave up his first day off work to pay  a visit to falkland performance in Glenrothes, to once again see if a different garage and set of opinions could get to the bottom of this.  After plugging the car into Vagcom it became apparent that between 1900rpm and 2900rpm the car was falling way below the boost etc that the ECU required to operate, and this had a knock on effect throughout the rev range. After checking every sensor and having a look over mechanics my map which I thought was causing the problem was removed. The problem still existed.

The exhaust was then removed to have the cat etc examined and the turbo checked over and yet again everything was still in correct working order. After some head scratching it was suggested between my dad and the garage that the timing could be an issue, even though my belt had been changed by a vw "specialist" before I got the car.

As of this morning falkland had got into my timing to find that the belt had been fitted two teeth off from normal!!! This is the first apparent problem since I started spending £££s on sensors over 8months ago. This was fixed and revo software was uploaded  I honestly cannot describe the difference this has made to the car, the overall drivability and the performance is unbelievable  I can't wait to get to a track now!

Would like to say a big thanks to falkland performance, the service was excellent and the courtesy car helped a lot  :happy2:

Sorry for the amount of words, I will have a pic update ASAP

Thanks  :happy2: stu.

I would advise going to an engine tuner like I did there, they were a lot more help than the smaller garages have been  :happy2:

It's not a nice feeling when you pay through the nose to fix a problem, only to find out its not been fixed.  :sad1:

Update time...

On Sunday I had the car at crail for the first time since its revo treatment. My times were 'ok' but I was expecting a bit better to be honest. No matter what way I attempted to launch the car, I was struggling to stop wheelspin. I know crail isnt the best surface but tips would be excellent

My dad has owned drag cars for years and he told me with a terminal speed of 100mph a high 13 is possible. I got no pictures but I got videos, I am still happy with how the car goes when rolling  ( im not sure how to embed?)

As comparison my stage 1 ed30 did 14.14 @ 102mph with a boot full of gear. I think you will struggle to get below 14 seconds unless you remove a lot of interior and spare wheel and get a perfect run.

Yeah I think going below 14 would be too much to ask at the minute.

I think with the correct launch and less wheelspin I could hope for 14.3 maybe  :happy2:

Not had too much of a modification update...

I had the car at a local garage to have a service and a general check over. The oil was changed to castrol gtx, all filters were changed to HEMP filters ( told the fuel one hadnt been changed for a very long time although I do have a reciept for it being done! ) the plugs were changed and the pads were done. I then paid a visit to crail, very happy with the car. Although the surface still isnt great and im still struggling with wheelspin my times have dropped again

My problem is now whether to go for a visual mod over the winter with edition 30 parts, or stage 2plus with bigger brakes?  :stupid:

Stu, if I was you i'd look into the performance parts rather than the visual ones. Winter can be known for its prangs with the obvious weather, and any new visual parts you bought could be damaged, out of the two i'd get the Stage 2+ and then wait until Spring for the visual stuff.

This is only an opinion  :happy2:

Just caught up with this thread. Great looking car. Where are you based out of interest? Noticed the Dunfermline dialling code on one of your rolling road print outs. Only ask because I'm originally from Dunfermline and visit fairly regular.

After your write up about Falkland, I'm thinking about letting them loose on my golf for a revo remap after Xmas.

Thanks, I think im being drawn more and more towards performance as well. I like the sound of stage 2!

Im actually based in Glasgow. Honestly cant speak highly enough of falkland, there were 2-3 people on my car solidly for two days when it was up. The difference after a stage 1 revo is excellent, feels like an entirely different car  :happy2:

How are the ebc discs? I've heard mixed reports, they look good though.

Ive actually only driven the car for around 15minutes since they have been swapped onto the right side and I cant fault them at all. I was told that a thing to look out for is the squeek that they cause but I havent heard any noise at all  :happy2:
