Hi peeps
just got a concern
ive been reading loads about this and it seems to be normal having mayo under oil cap in the colder months
but my worry now its in the dipstick only small amount. The reason why im worried in all threads it says its ok if its at the top
of the oil cap but be worried if its in the dipstick, so im worried :scared:
i noticed it in mid november this year only had the car since july 2011 i do about 300 miles a week so always check my oil 2-3weeks
i started to clean it every other day for 2 weeks and i would say for the last two weeks not even looked at it until today and notice it was in the
dipstick as well
Car drives normal no problems and coolant has not moved
i do 18 miles one way to work and back so total 36
its 4 miles from my house to motor way then i pretty much drive 60mph on the motorway for 12 miles
it takes about 6-7 miles before the water temp gets to 90c
ive notice cause i got dsg i dont really go over 2000 rpm dont really race the car
once at work car is sat for 9 hours then same journey back.
the other thing i dont get i have two friends with gti's (dsg) as well i made them check.
one has very similar driving pattern as mine with no mayo what so ever
and the other all local but drives like hes just stolen it and hes got a very small amount
so my main question is should i be worried about the mayo in dipstick
thanks

This is very common on Golfs in winter. If your car's running perfectly and your not loosing coolant etc don't worry.
It's simply condensation due to the cold weather. If you drove your car for an extended period or drove it harder it would likely not be as bad. Mayo on the dip stick is nothing extra to worry about.
You've answered your own question by the driving you do. Low winter temps, low revs, driven gently, not an overly long commute and most of it on the motorway where you'll be getting a massive flow of constant cold air.
Just keep on giving it your usual checks and if nothing changes (i.e your coolant level changes, poor running etc) forget about it.

as above, and I would also give the car a oil change

Post a pic up showing the colour of the oil on the end of the dipstick.

Thanks guys
After my journey home last night I did check it
And it did seem as the engine did not give out much heat I put
My hand on the engine not really hot after 18mile drive
I don't have my engine cover on as I have nuespeed induction
Shall a change the oil now or give it few weeks till the weather gets warmer
Cause the same will happen again?
Thanks

I've just had exaclty the same scare, milky oil and all of a sudden a loss of coolant so feared the worst. Got it checked out and all that was wrong was a leaking pipe, the milky oil on both the filler and dipstick was as stated a lot on here apprently a combination of doing short journies (wife only goes 8m to work) and the onset of the cold weather meaning the excess moisture isn't burnt off properly. Apparently Porsches are really bad for it.
-
Short journeys and a dodgy PCV are usually the cause. Far less common, it's coming in from the oil/coolant gearbox heat exchanger.

thanks i will have to get that checked out
do you know if its expensive to buy had a look on eurocar parts website cant find it unless im looking in the wrong place. Or is it dealer only part
-
It's usually a split bit of hose, a couple of pounds from the dealer. Whip off the engine cover and you should see the venting system - check the crinked looking hoses.

looks OK ,give it a longer trip ,and it will go away

Do you reckon it will go away once it's mixed with the oil like it's indicating that on the dipstick
Or will it need a oil change, only had it serviced 3 months ago by awesome gti and it wasn't cheap
-
In answer to your question. It'll be fine. Don't bother changing your oil just because of the condensation. It'll only happen again with the new stuff. It'll disappear after you use the car more or the weather warms up etc. Looking at your pics it's not that bad at all. My mk4 Gti was terrible for it in winter.
-
That's nothing, go on a log run and get it good and hot - all that will evaporate away.
-
Looks like it needs an italian tune up to clean out the cobwebs :signLOL:

-
Ive had this recently and had it in the past on an audi. I only do short journeys aswell

glad i found this thread as i was panicking myself.
My gti isnt really driven much as i use the van for work so the car might do 10 miles a day at most, and the mrs does most of them and seeing as she is learning at the moment the car really isnt getting a chance to get hot.
Think i might take it on a nice drive down some a roads on the weekend, let it stretch its legs and ghet warm :)
