Title: Aftermarket reversing camera
Post by: MPS on October 09, 2012, 08:45:52 pm
Anyone fitted one of these? Look pretty good, a damn sight cheaper than the flip out badge cam as well. It fits in one of the numberplate light holes.

You can get wireless versions as well - pretty daft though because there's as much wire as the wired versions lol.

Can't go wrong for £14 surely? The only thing is you need a video out on your radio, of which only some variants of the RCD-510 have.

They do work, but expect to buy a new one every year or so. For the price I can live with that.

Does annoy me a little that the protruding camera blocks a bit of light output on the number plate.
I bought an LED white canbus festoon for the other unit so the colour output is the same.

They're not perfect but don't leave any permenant cuts/marks on the car and if you have a HU geared for it, then why not have one?

£14,,, na wont work or as said before may do for a while on poor quality then stop working,,,,, up to you dude but most things on e-bay from china costing little money is junk,, personally i am off to vw soon to get them to supply and fit dealer sensors and wire it into a new 510 unit,,, good price they gave me too

I think its one of those things that everyone is unsure of, I dont like the look of them patruding, followed a car the other day wsith somthing similar fitted I wondered what the hell it was at first. But I think for £14 its not bad and maybe worth trying.  :drinking:

With a CCD not CMOS you'd actually be amazed how good the picture is for the money even in the dark, more so when a properly insulated video cable is used with it and not the length of spaghetti that comes with it.

Can't slate it for being Chinese...most goods are these days! I've had these types of cameras for four years so believe me, they do work. Not once has it failed to come on when reverse is engaged.
If you look at the spec of most aftermarket cameras. they are using the exact same camera lens prety much.

The reason I replace mine now and again is cos they are so close to the road that sometimes a stone cracks the perspex, & £14 is expensive if you shop around

If I had an OEM HU I'd probably have the boot handle one, but can't be f'd trying to interface it with my Zenec HU when I know this already has the wiring in place.

Give it a go, for £14 it's disposable so if it does not work it's no biggy. Looks sh*te quality but if it works, it's a win for you.

Anyone going for these cameras with aftermarket audio in the car, I recommend you get a video cable such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5m-RCA-Phono-Digital-Audio-Composite-Video-Professional-Quality-for-Home-Cinema-/230862407159?pt=UK_Computing_Sound_Vision_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item35c078c5f7 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5m-RCA-Phono-Digital-Audio-Composite-Video-Professional-Quality-for-Home-Cinema-/230862407159?pt=UK_Computing_Sound_Vision_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item35c078c5f7) to cut down on interference.

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, the cable that comes with it is as thick as spaghetti and not well shielded.

surely the Scirocco VW camera would a better option, seen them sell for not much on ebay and the cable is £40 from the dealer

i asked the parts manager face to face today at my vw dealer if vw sell the parking camera as all it would need is a new tail badge and cable plus coding and was told they are not allowed to do it ?
wtf,,,, so damn stupid
i have ordered oem parking sensors and will maybe need to get them colour coded,,, to supply and fit and colour is £330
would be interested in how your camera works before my parts come, when do you plan to get the fitting done

i mentioned earlier that i've used these for a while and they are ok, but not perfect. the one joe has is the same.

you run a 12v, GND and video cable to the HU. assuming it is OEM or has a CAN box then it works automatically in reverse. with my zenec i can have it running on screen permenantly if i wanted.

there is no bulb out error when removing one light but looks better with a CANbus white festoon opposite it to blend in.

that particular camera 95% fits the bulb holder location but it's pretty much hidden.

have run a few cheapo cameras in on different cars. don't expect it to match a £300 OEM camera but they're more than good enough.

Iv got the rns-510 headunit. Doh, didnt know about the scirocco camera!

I've got the scirocco camera in mine but mounted inside the rear screen, not perfect ( any ideas on better location?)

The rns uses an rgb signal...that cameras a CMOS camera and will most likely not work...
You can get around this by using a multimedia adapter for the rns, or use a different camera...

Is it possible to connect this camera (the license plate bulb holder model) to my RNS510? If yes, how? A pin-out view?
And what about the scirocco camera?
I really want this!

How did you run the wires through the back bumper?

On mine, I had to unclip but not fully remove the rear bumper and feed the wires through the offside gromit. Then up to the 12v supply and then through the cabin.
Title: Re: Aftermarket reversing camera
Post by: skard on October 28, 2012, 02:20:37 pm
There's a massive grommet just next to where it needs to be, you'll see it with the inner \____/ panel off.

I got some repair wires and a plug from VW to make up a loom so not chopping factory wires. Thus when changing camera I solder onto the added loom.

Cheers Guys,

I'm assuming you don't need to supply power from the HU if your tapping into the reverse light wires?
Title: Re: Aftermarket reversing camera
Post by: skard on October 29, 2012, 04:30:26 pm
Depends on HU.

The Zenecs I had came with integrated CAN interface and seperate camera 12v and gnd cables on the rear to connect to.
Otherwise can't see how it automatically comes on with reverse if not directly into the HU.

Seeing as you need to run the VGA lead anyway you just need to run two skinny wires up beside it (the wires on the camera look like only a couple of strands thick). With the fat VGA cable I linked to earlier in the thread you shouldn't have any crossover with the signal and power cables being run together.

Post by: Zaf2616 on October 29, 2012, 07:30:39 pm
I see, but that would be on the assumption that the head units have a CAN interface?

The only thing I can assume as to why you'd tap into the reverse lights is to give power to the camera when the reverse light is on, therefore activating the camera, which in turn, turns the HU to the video in feed
