I used to drive a Volvo and got used to have the always on head lights, my mk5 GTi has Auto headlights which are ok but they do go on and off a lot on country roads. Anyone know a way of fooling the light sensor, e.g. cover it up so that when the lights are on Auto they stay on all the time?
-
Just turn them to the "on" position and not in auto?! :signLOL:
-
But then they won't go off when I take the key out and I'll get a flat battery!
-
Turn them off when you get out!!! :stupid:
-
Embrace the light, it is good
-

Funny!
Turn them off when you get out!!! :stupid:
Very funny! :congrats:
-
Turn them off when you get out!!! :stupid:
That defeats the entire point of the question!!! I want lights that come on with the ignition and go off again when you remove the key like the Volvo does.
If I wanted to turn the control manually I wouldn't have asked the question!
-
^^^^ easy tiger! Don't take it to heart, his reply was funny!!
Why not just get DRL's?
:happy2:
-
Pretty sure the lights do go off when the ignition is not on even with the light switch turned to the 'on' position.

Hilarious.
I hate the led drl look that cars get, I like the dipped beam as people seeing you coming, im after them from of visibility point of view not from a cosmetic view.

Im only joking with you! :rolleye: Dont some people code their indicators to act as drl's? Im guessing you just want the lights on so others can see you better?

Precisely, i used to find with the Volvo (that was black) people never missed you coming with the headlights on, my GTi (also back) seems to be invisible to people as they keep pulling out in front of me!

They do, I have mine on all the time, and they go off when you lock the car and it times out.
-
I keep mine on the "On" position constantly. Where you said you don't want a flat battery, they stay on as Coming Home Lights for 30seconds±. Try it and see.
-
Get another Volvo....????

X3 That's definetely right. The lights will not stay on when you lock the car. Just leave your lights in the on position and forget about it, nothing to worry about.

Must go try it, thanks. Either I didn't wait long enough or because my car is a German spec not UK spec it's different.
-
get another volvo, ill second that :happy2:
btw drl's are not just cosmetic they are a very good visibility indicator if you get the right ones, i have just ordered a set as yes i want the cosmetic upgrade but also to be seen as they are a lot better than side lights

If you have highline, you can change on how long they stay on for!

I don't have highline :-( I wish I did as I like to have automatic locking doors.
-
You may be able to change it if someone has vcds

i just tried that and didnt work,,, i put the lights to the full on pos and nothing, locked the car and also nothing ???
if i leave the lights on the auto pos and unlock the car the headlights stay on for 10 seconds only and when i lock it no lights again ?
wish i could make them stay on longer and also stay on for maybe 20 seconds once i lock the car,,, i do not have highline unfortunatelly so dont think i can ammend them unless anyone knows how
-
Bummer, so if that doesn't work, am I back to trying to cover, fool, shortcut the light sensor?
Anyone know where the sensor is? Is it built into the rear view mirror mount?
-
I think its built into the windscreen, near to the rear view mirror, just below it

Did you put the ignition on when you tried it?

Scrapped Drls and went or yellow tint fogs

Scrapped Drls and went or yellow tint fogs
yellow tint fogs,,, as far as i can see the fogs dont do very much,,, surely drl's would be much more penetrating to see,,, i mean i know they are but what is your thought on that
-
Just quickly videoed mine.
silly me, i tried it by starting and stopping the engine, first leaving the light in the auto position and then tried leaving it on the on position,,, each one gave me the same,,, 10 seconds
would like more time, maybe 30 seconds.
so to clarify my lights go on for 10 seconds when i remote open the car and agin for ten seconds when i turn of the engine ????
how can i get this extended without highline controls
-
^^^ VCDS probably.
-
if you tick byte 0 bit 3 with VCDS in the pic below in the CECM your headlights will work exactly as you want, just like a Volvo
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz45%2FSI-R32%2Fscand.jpg&hash=4191514f3bc93eee4f0743a045031e9fe50bc6bc)
-
As above. Leave the switch in the on position and when you come to lock the car the lights will go out. :-))
-
But then they won't go off when I take the key out and I'll get a flat battery!
When mine are on the on position and I take the key out of the ignition, it's goes through the 'coming home' stage for aprox 10 seconds then goes off!
-
If you have highline, you can change on how long they stay on for!
I don't have highline :-( I wish I did as I like to have automatic locking doors.
I don't have highline either, but my dealer changed my doors to automatic locking for me for free.
-
WTF - three pages on this thread? :stupid:
Just leave the lights on in the ON position. I've done this for the last 12 months or so (I too travel down country roads). Never had a flat battery. I take the key out of the ignition and open the door. If it's light outside, they'll have turned off. If it's dark outside, they'll come on for a set period of time (adjustable via VCDS or highline).
FWIW I find DRLs are more visible than headlights. Remember that DRLs aren't designed for visibility, just vehicle awareness.
-

You don't need Highline to have the anti-hijack (auto door lock) and/or doors unlock when you take the key out of the ignition features enabled. I've had this coded on my '07 GTi which only has Midline.

dude i dont have a vcds, just got my car 3 weeks ago and buying bits like mad but not looked at that yet, if i buy one of these can i simply program it the way i want to ?
if so how much does it cost and is it noob proof lol

RLs aren't designed for visibility, just vehicle awareness.
visibility / awareness,,, same thing,,, if you are visible then that person is aware yes :stupid:
re---wtf 3 pages on this--- chill,,, some people are new to this forum, i searched for this topic but couldnt find the pages you stated,, admittingly i need to get to grips with the search function a bit better, im sure its there, but for noobies on this site who have to start somewhere comments like that just make it difficult for us to ask the question in the first place.
may seem stupid to someone like you who has been on this forum for a while and is very familiar with the gti but from my point of view i have owned a gti for 3 weeks and been on this forum for 3 weeks so i am not a seasoned pro.
with all due respect please bare this in mind before you tell us wtf and crazy etc as we all have to start somewhere
thank you :drinking:
-
My comment about DRLs was about not being used for illumination ie they don't help the driver see any farther ahead. They just highlight the car to other road users.
Also, comment about 3 pages - it didn't need three pages of replies. There were six (incl mine) to say they stay on. I had no issues about OP's questions - they were valid.

One thing I have noticed a few people mention is the ability to use the high line display to control how long the coming home lights stay on for.
For some reason this option appears to be missing from my menu.
I have a 58 plate Gti with high line.
I can change settings regarding how the Morrors work and how the doors lock/unlock.
Should I have the option about the lights? If so looks like something is broken on my highlife menu.
Just got a MKVI diesel with highline and that does have the option to.
-
Thanks for the info, I've not had chance to test my lights out today been too busy. Would love to get vcds so I could make some tweaks for the lights and doors, bit expensive though for the amount I'd use it for.
-
There is a list on here and on R32OC of people with vcds/vag com you can always find someone close to help u out...;D

That's the great thing about being a newbie you find out some new cool stuff! I see there's a member in Camberley which isn't too far away, will have to drop him a line.

Yep, mine the same as above :happy2:

yes mine do this but because i do not have high line if i was to buy a vcds can i program the lights to stay on for longer as where i live 20 seconds would be better,,,, also can i ask,,, is the puddle lights ( the ones at the bottom of the wing mirrors ) standard on the gti ? does everyone have them,,, i like them but the light that comes from them is so so so weak,,,, i have just bought all light replacement led bulbs so im hoping that will help but was just wonderring if it was standard and if anyone else also thought they are very weak :happy2:

Puddle lights aren't standard but an optional extra. I seem to recall reading a thread about them on here where someone had upgraded them to LEDs and it made a big improvement.
-
Can someone with highline clarify for me what menu you see when goons through the convenience settings?
Does anyone get the option to change how long your lights stay on for once you've locked the car?
I check the hand book and it shows this in the menu but has a note to say not all vehicles will have this, depending on the specification of the car.
My car is quite a high spec with only sat nav not specced from standard I believe.
Could the fact I have xenons maybe the reason I don't have the light settings in the menu.

Hi mate, here's where you change the timing of the lights:

hello, can i ask i do not have highline so cant adjust,,, if i bought a vcds unit can you only put the lights on for 10 secons or can you do 30 seconds for example
thanks
-
With vcds you can change pretty much anything you like... But geniune vcds software costs £200+ might just be cheaper buying highline and getting kalu to code it :P Is there no-one in your area with vcds? It's a lot easier if it is, saves a few quid anyways
-
Thanks for the pics, mine definitely doesnt have that option in the menu.
So I now need to work out if that is by fault or design.
Does your car have Xenons?
-
I recently found this out on my trip to Silverstone last week. Due to the fog I put the lights to on. When I parked up I forgot to turn them off. When I got back to the car and saw the switch was on I got worried my battery would be flat, but the car started, so the lights must have gone off by them self as they weren't actually on when I got back.
Therefore it means you can just leave it in the on position and they will come on when you turn the ignition on and then they will go off when you take out the key from the ignition.
With my highline dash I have set my leaving and coming home lights to 30 secs. That is a great feature. Well worth upgrading for the extra features over midline :happy2:

Thanks for the info.
I have the full height display (highline) which came as stand from factory. It hasn't been modded afterwards.
I don't have this neat feature unfortunately.
I do have leaving home/coming home lights but they only stay on for 10 seconds.
Here is my menu. Missing the lights and vision :-(

That's odd. I would have thought all highline MFD's would have had the option. Maybe it needs activating in VCDS.

Yeah it's strange.
Can anyone with factory Xenons and highline check to see if they have this light and vision setting?
-
have looked into highline prices / fitment etc and i think im just gonna buy a vcds later on as seems easier
gonna buy a rns510 from eddie tomorrow plus shark aerial and k05 so the funds are dried up but will prob buy the vcds later on.
my lights are just 10 seconds but would like 20 or 30
-
Finally got to try this out, I realised my problem was with thw switch set to 'on' the headlights won't go off until the car has been locked even in full daylight, I expected the lights to go off when the key was removed in daylight. After locking the car the lights do go off after 10 seconds.
