I changed my DV today, and am I glad I did... the boost is back!
I bought a standard GTI about a month ago which 'whistled' when accelerating, so I was pretty sure that the DV seal was shot. Measured on any scale, I'm no car mechanic, so thanks to Lee (nc35) for posting his write up a few years ago.
Here's the bones of it...
Fitting is quite easy. Remove OSF wheel and front of the wheel arch liner - the bit with the vent for the brakes (you will know it when you see it).
Once removed the DV is just behind the inner wing. The photograph in the first post will help you recognise the location. It is fastened on by three 5mm alan bolts. They are a little awkward to get to but not that bad. I have a Halfords Micro Pro socket set - about £30 if not in one of the 1/2 price sales. It is the best bit of kit I have ever bought, for just over a tenner and the instant replacement of broken bits for the pro range can't be beaten.
The kit has all the adapters in it to remove the wheel arch liner and the alan bolts.
Use a bit of thread lock before refitting.
All in all took about one hour from start to finish.
Hope this helps.

I don't own any ramps/axle stands so this 'going in through the wheel arch' guide was perfect - I did borrow a trolley jack though, rather than put my faith in the scissor jack. :happy2: The whole thing went pretty smoothly, but I'll just add a couple of extra things which may help someone else.
- If you open the bonnet, enough light will get through so you don't need a lamp. I did have a lamp, but once my hands were in there casting shadows, it didn't really add anything.
- There's about a million nooks and crannies under the DV so spread a cloth out under the DV and cover the whole lot and if (when!) you drop something it just lands on the cloth.
- There isn't a lot of space, so if you aren't familiar with how the clip for the DV wiring works, look at one in the engine bay first to see how they come apart. (There's one situated between the fusebox and the headlight).
- Like Lee, I used a 5mm allen key socket on a small ratchet (1/4") for the top bolt, but found it easier to do the lower two with a standard 5mm allen key. You can get one hand each side of the suspension strut which helps.
My car is a 55 plate with 99k on the clock (AXX engine, Rev. B DV), so I can only imagine how many times this rubber seal has been stretched. Here's a pic, 8 tears in total... Yikes! :scared: I'm surprised that VW aren't recommending that these are checked at some point. :sad1:

I replaced it with a Rev D. (part number 06H 145 710 D) <-- 31/03/13: I've now changed it again to a Rev G. (part number 06F 145 710 G) which is even better. :happy2:
PS. I know there's a lot of DV stuff on the forum already, but for any other novices like me, you can never have enough info/tips.
Rich.

I know that a fault with this can show up through a scan BUT could it be at fault and NOT show up on a scan?
-
^^^Absolutely.

^^^Absolutely.
Best get out and have a look then :scared:
-
Bit cold for that...hypothermia and frostbite await
-
I was suppose to do this today as well, can't wait to see if mines gone.. I'm replacing mine with a rev G, this is right isn't it? Why did you use a rev D
-
Swapped mine yesterday for a rev G.. What a difference it makes! I do miss my turbo whistle a bit, but as soon as it starts boosting, puts a small on my face instantly!! It is a totally different car now. :driver:

Great stuff, itchin to do this now! Iv got the part just need to find the time..
-
Mine whistles under acceleration. I just thought it sounded cool, I didn't realise it wasn't supposed to. Haha. I'll get one changed ASAP.
-
I'd use G too mate, I've had D in for a few months and I think it's leaking... Boost requested isn't matching boost actual....one more job in the pipe line to swap out.
-
I went to the stealers and asked them about my DV. I read that the car shouldn't whistle under acceleration and I asked them about this. They said that the 2005 MK5 is pretty noisy anyway and that they don't really know if it would be the DV.
Now, should my car make a really cool whistle under acceleration or not? I like the sound but if it is destroying power and fuel consumption, I will replace it with a rev G valve.
-
^^^^ replace it with a Revision G as a matter of course. Only £40 and worth every penny. :happy2:

Actually dealer says £28 inc. VAT, so even better. Thanks

Your dealer isn't the stealer I usually visit then

If it sounds like this, then I'd say it's definitely busted. (The alarm bells would already be ringing though as there's no acceleration at all here!)

Mine didn't sound that bad, more like this...

I went with the Rev. D, because I read that it's more solid with the piston and not the diaphragm design, but everyone on this thread is recommending the G. Hmmmm.... what to do?... :sad1: <-- 31/03/13: I've now changed it again to a Rev G. (part number 06F 145 710 G) which is even better, so go with the G. :happy2:

^^^
D is more solid but the design means it will still leak some boost even from new when compared to a G as the rubber diaphragm design is more leak proof...well until it splits.
Although I recently changed my 6 year old rev C (rubber diaphragm) and it was fine.
-
Mine sounds like the second one, so I'm glad it's not that bad

Yeah I thought it was a lot cheaper than everyone says on here. I might buy a load and sell them on :happy2: haha
-
That's another job for the weekend then! No whooshing but it's good to know everythings in good working order.
What mileage do they usually start failing?
-
my rev c was fine when I swapped it for a G thats on a BWA engined MY07 gti thats covered 56k
-
Recently changed mine for a G because the original had split. Feels great again now. The lift off 'whoosh' is a bit quieter than old one always was, but I don't mind too much.

What rev was your old one?

Mines noisy, like the second video. My car is going to the stealers on thursday as an airbag light has come up so they are fixing that. My car is under warranty so i dont wanna touch it atm, how do i ask them to check it? Or do i check it myself and if its split ask them to check it? (Although ill already know its split)

I'm not sure. It was the one that came fitted from new in '05.

Ah ok probably rev a or b then. It seems to be the rev b's that are splitting. Not so much the c's.

So many revisions!!! What one is best for me? I noticed the whistling :sad1:
Mine is an 05 36000 miles and its stock!

Mines an 08 edition 30 on 49k is it worth me changing mine I think k I can hear a whistling on acceleration but wouldn't mind changing it for piece of mind, is there only these 'G' versions available as an upgrade or is there any aftermarket/uprated solutions?
Also does anyone have the part numbers be for the great version? :D

Defo change it! Even if its only for piece of mine, that's what I did and mine was split all the way round :/ you could go with a forge aftermarket one but I'm sure this is around the £200-£300 mark.. A revised G is the latest revision.. Part no is 06F 145 710G

Ok cheers buddy will get it ordered Monday :) might just do a bit of research on the uprated one too

Do TDIs suffer with DV failures in the same way?
-
Do TDIs suffer with DV failures in the same way?
Don't think it affects TDI's.
-
Sometimes there is no fault through VAGCOM when DV is shot.
-
I've got the Rev G DV waiting to fit once it get's a bit warmer!
My car is whistling a bit, not as bad as those in the vids, so I really hope the DV cures it and gives it a bit more poke as it's not the fastest car I've driven... Will let you know what happens!
-
How did it go? Fitting one this week :)
-
It is advisable to remove both halves of the wheel arch liner? If so, that may be why I struggled with just the front half removed.. :ashamed:
Might have another go... :happy2:
