Well I saw a thread about putting the injectors and turbo from a CR170 and with a remap it should take it up to around 200hp (has anyone done this or seen it done?) but after chatting with one of the guys from Darkside today I've decided to go for a big turbo, manifold, dpf delete and exhaust so i will hopefully be able to keep up with some of you guys :p

Other than that my priority is brakes and suspension. I'm putting GTI suspension and ARB's on, hopefully by Monday then I will find some GTI brakes and fit them ( if anyone has any let me know please)

I do over 20k a year so can't mess around too much with it as i need some fuel economy.

Some pictures of the front end taken today. I've decided to paint the strip on the grille blue, calipers blue and paint the engine cover silver and blue. Hopefully get it done next weekend.

Unfortunately i binned them as they were stuck on so well, I had to break them to get them off.

Today I managed to fit the new rear springs and got the front shocks out before realising i don't have the right tools to get the bolt on top off, and anywhere that could sell something to do it is closed.

Does anyone know what the best tools for it is? (without spending a fortune on the VW tool) I was thinking    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silverline-10-21mm-Dogbone-Wrench-Box-Spanners-Mechanical-Engineering-Tools-DIY-/300833619468?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item460b14be0c   then putting the 7mm allen key through it.

I got it from ebay, Ready painted and it has 3M tape that just sticks it on. Very easy to do.

I looked into it but from what I'm told s3 brakes wont fit under 17's so its £500 for the brakes then the same again at least for new wheels, but i could get the gti brakes with yellow stuff pads for between £200 to £300.

The other problem is that i need the brakes done very soon as the remap has made it too much for the little 288 brakes to handle and i get some serious fade after enthusiastic driving.

Seen as the sun was out today I thought i would do a bit of painting on the car. I did the front lip, grill surround and engine bay. Still got a bit to do, but but I'll finish it tomorrow.

Yeah painted it myself with a few cans. If you are planning to paint it, I would get a thick filler primer and give it plenty of coats until its smooth. I left the texture in and although it looks alright, it's not that great close up.

Nice to see another Jetta on here - 312mm brakes off a GTi are a good start on the brakes (same calipers & pads) just need 312mm discs and different carriers.

200bhp is easily do-able! I'm upto 185 on a PD140 with just a map!

Good luck with the mods!

Hey bud. S3 stoppers do fit under 17s. I would not bother with the upgrade to 312s and instead go straight to the S3/R32 units.
I have 17 x 7.5 ET56 at the front and have around 10mm caliper to wheel on the side, about 15mm rear spoke to caliper, and about 4mm caliper to wheel weight.

You can see a pic here (https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/901687_513026085400697_145637121_o.jpg) and here (http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/2448/img0947xl.jpg)

Car is coming along nicely bud, hoping to see some good progress. Not sure on tuning of the CRs, the PD140s eat turbos so you need to watch out on them, hopefully the CR ones are a bit stronger! If it has a DPF get that removed and it'll feel like a whole new car along side a remap!

Im going upto 312mm brakes as they are a cheap upgrade compared to r32/s3 brakes. Only need the carriers and new discs. Got mine for £100ish

Right now I'm a bit tight up for cash as had to do a DSG service, one tyre, tax and insurance in one month so I think I will just go for GTI brakes for the time being.
I will wait until i can find a cheap pair of S3 brakes as its easy enough to sell the GTI brakes at what I got them for.

I did get the bargain of the century last week though. GTI front and back anti roll bar with bushes for a fiver :)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Golf-GTI-Mk5-Front-Rear-anti-roll-bars-/330907478937?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=sHrgOF%252BG2t9zBvt9P9r1PROUSI8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Golf-GTI-Mk5-Front-Rear-anti-roll-bars-/330907478937?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=sHrgOF%252BG2t9zBvt9P9r1PROUSI8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc)

I'm still in shock about that one. I know its only 1 or 2 mm thicker but every little helps.

I got the spray cans out today again.

Removed the rear bumper.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz375%2FJohnTankTaylor%2FIMAG0168.jpg&hash=06dff67296f91cf751d8a694c55814ec1c0accd8)

I used high build primer and gave it 3 thick coats. Then i sanded it down starting with 400 grain sand paper going up until al the texture was taken out. This is the result.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz375%2FJohnTankTaylor%2FIMAG0165.jpg&hash=41d9c32940c8da97388147b3bddc061a174a0772)

Then i gave it 3 coats of paint and 3 coats of lacquer. A little tip is to heat up the lacquer before you spray it to make it go on smoothly.

All i need to do is buff it up tomorrow and re fit it and hopefully it will look great.

Don't have a spray booth but I have a kitchen that is in need of decoration   and it really needs decorating now. The primer that was in the air has clung to finger prints on things and it looks like CSI have been round dusting for prints.

I've held it against the car and it looks bang on match.

I'll get a photo up in a few days. I'm just trying to sort out my Dad's Jag after someone hit it. Need a new rear bumper, boot and some work doing to the rear wing

I'm going to give the car a good detailing tomorrow so i will take some close up pics then.

Nice colour coding job!!!!! :happy2:

Maybe something like this as a removable colour coded cover?

The less sticky out the better obv, unless you want the drag racer look with a sticky out trailing arm :/

Hmm, to me that colour looks miles off. It will never lay right especially from cans rather than HVLP but still, you'll almost never get a good colour match on silver!  :sad1: :sad1:

Still looks like a quality job.   :happy2:

The colour is pretty close its just the way the light hits it. I'll get some pics done with a proper camera instead of my phone and it should look better
It still looks better than black plastic anyway.

Sorry Stan but I'm keeping the mudguards on.

I installed the sound system the day I got the car but I will just post a few pics to show you what I've got.

Erisin 1058V http://www.erisin.com/erisin-es1058v-hd-3d-volkswagen-car-gps-dvd-player-pip_p297.html (http://www.erisin.com/erisin-es1058v-hd-3d-volkswagen-car-gps-dvd-player-pip_p297.html)
I can't fault this unit at all. It has pretty much every feature ever put into a DVD player and it cost £180.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz375%2FJohnTankTaylor%2FIMAG0346.jpg&hash=c3fdfaee20bfe093b7e42b20140c51339958027c)

I tapped in to the bar on the fuse box, so on the right are the connections for my amp and reversing sensors.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz375%2FJohnTankTaylor%2FIMAG0338.jpg&hash=4da9476775446848b210aedfde05d9524cd5995b)

This is the best pic i can get of the amp as it is tucked right under the seat and a pain to get out. Its an Alpine M350. When the seat is in its normal position it can't be seen at all. I have run a switch into the under seat drawer so i can turn the amp off if i need to.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz375%2FJohnTankTaylor%2FIMAG0339.jpg&hash=c83de9f640b502ca043c2b5d4dc7cdafdc936b44)

I used Van Damme 2.5mm speaker cable from the amp to the sub and put gold plated banana plugs on the end so i can take my sub out very easily.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz375%2FJohnTankTaylor%2FIMAG0341.jpg&hash=c6b7538e920d626c1ed776f8c26d15872d694ef0)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz375%2FJohnTankTaylor%2FIMAG0340.jpg&hash=ca0dc90c3d9c0b16ac1b76a16e49c14775ec3d0f)

The box is from an old fusion sub and really needs replacing but this may take time as its pretty low on the priority list.

The speaker is an Infinity 1000w.

Installing the reversing camera was the biggest ball ache of the lot but in the end i got the cables in properly. The camera is next to the number plate light and cant be seen from most angles.

Just fit a toggle switch into the remote line and fit it in the centre console in one of the blanks?

I've finally got around to sorting the rear anti roll bar. I've just started working in a local garage, so its nice to be able to get my car up on ramps to work on it. It didn't take long at all to sort out.

My boss decided to switch my numberplate to see if I would notice. I'm ashamed to say that i didn't even notice.

Yeah a huge difference. It feels like the back end is on rails.

Got the front ARB and front springs to be fitted on Thursday. Friday prepping and detailing the car. Saturday is the opening of our new garage, then Inters on Sunday.

It's gonna be a fun week.

I'm not sure yet, I'll probably decide on the day. It just depends how our open day goes and if i can be arsed setting off at 6am. Are you taking the estate or the Jetta?

Any convoys from Manchester on the Sunday?

Front springs and ARB are now on. Managed to do both springs and the arb in about 6 hours so not bad to say I'm still a novice.
Here are a few pics of it all done. DPF delete and GTI front brakes coming soon.

Is it just a straight fit the gti roll bar ? And whats the difference between the gti bars ? Are they thicker or solid ?

Yeah just a straight fit. Got them off ebay for a tenner and they had the bushes already on. They are either 2 or 3 mm thicker, cant remember exactly but its just tightened up the car. I would really recommend it to anyone that doesn't have a gti.

Looking good mate.  One question though, where did you wire the light up from the camera for the number plate lights?  I tried installing one a while a go but gave up trying to wire the light up :(

Hey Dan, My reversing camera looked like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/woo-For-MAGOTAN-JETTA-POLO-SUPERB-PASSAT-CC-Reversing-Rear-View-Backup-Camera-/121212913862?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1c38da48c6 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/woo-For-MAGOTAN-JETTA-POLO-SUPERB-PASSAT-CC-Reversing-Rear-View-Backup-Camera-/121212913862?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1c38da48c6) So i just chopped the wires on the back of the old light and soldered them on to the red and black wires on the camera. Only took a few seconds.

I painted all my Calipers last week but I don't like the silver so will be going blue to match my grille. Also I did the "Mufflerectomy" and welded in steel tube instead of the Middle box and silencer. Its not really made the car much louder and you can feel the slight gain in hp. I was going to take a photo of it but my welding is shocking and I'm a little embarrassed to post it.

Thanks mate.  I'll have to take another look.  I was trying to solder my two wires to the metal plates the original bulb connects to in the boot lid Haha.  Calipers are looking good by the way and I'm sure you're welding isn't that bad, as long as it's all strong it's all good :D

I've measured from edge to edge on the nut and it's just over 7 cm. 7 x 1.7012 is 120. Measured the new wheels and they are 112.
I've put my old wheels back on now otherwise I would show you with a tape.

I've measured them and they are stamped 5 x 112 so I don't think so no.

Thats seriously wierd! Unless your hubs have been replaced with the wrong pcd ones?

According to the net pcd measrements should be taken from the middle of the nuts/holes.

Hi mate - Your Jetta looked great at the meet yesterday :happy2: I think you may have measured your PCD wrong though. You have got the standard classix wheels on, which are 5x112. So your PCD must be 5x112
Title: Re: My Jetta TDI
Post by: Tank on April 29, 2014, 12:48:07 pm
Cheers mate, so did yours. Yeah i know they are but at the time the new wheels said 5x112 and it doesn't say the size on the classix so I measured it and must have got mixed up. Luckily I have already sold them and going to buy a new turbo instead now, I think.

The turbo off the cr170 then dpf delete and mapped by darkside. That with my straight through should give a nice 220 bhp and a shed load of torque, maybe more but I want a safe map as it's a daily driver.

These were the alloys I was going to put on but it turns out even though they were stamped 5x112 they were 5x100. I've now sold them to a mate with an Ibiza.

Had a look at a few Golf MK1 cabs but none did it for me, this makes me feel 17 and driving my first car again. I completely love it. I'm keeping the Jetta but putting a hold to any mods to it until i get the 3i up to scratch. She needs a lot of work to get her running well, but it will be worth it in the end.

I know I'm a traitor and turned to the dark side but it is so good to drive, I don't care.
