Title: Dodds GT 170 Build - Going, going, going...
Post by: dodds-gttdi on August 31, 2013, 12:24:00 pm
Ok so after 6 months out of a VW I came to my sense and picked up another mk5 in the form of a 170 GT TDi as below. It's a '56' Tornado Red more door effort. Not many extras on it, an armrest is about the height of it. It has the regular charcoal GT interior with a measly RCD300. Although the car has 100k on the clock it has a full service history, pulls incredibly strong (possible existing remap as it feels a heck of a lot quicker than my previous 180+ bhp Golf!) and it's had the all important recall for injectors. Bodywork is in fantastic nick. It's been treated to Autoglym LifeShine at some point so it is a really deep red.

I have a few plans so far (had the car 2 days). Will be looking to put colour-coded rear valance and side skirts on soon, along with colour-coding the front valance and adding the GTI splitter (in the post).

I'd love a set of 18" TD Pro 1.2's in silver sometime in the future and would like to remap it and get rid of the DPF.

Will let the pics do the talking:

Apologies for the filth on the car. Off to wash it now!

Future plans for the front are the Black GTI grille with red pinstripe (matches the car) but no GTI badge.

I already own an armrest MDI but this car doesn't come with the DIN slot, just a storage hole. I'd like to end up with a RCD510 (again) and the MDI in the armrest or glovebox if it has to. Cruise control and a GTI flat bottom SW is high up on my list too. ;-)

Look forward to seeing how this progresses. I do think the centre of the front grill needs to be gloss black though. Just my opinion  :happy2:

As above I'm looking to fit the GTI front in due time. Keeping the lower three 'slatted' grilles though. Taking inspiration from the Golf Speed Edition but the opposite.

Thursday: bought Golf GT 170
Bought GTI splitter from member on here.
Friday: visited TPS Edinburgh
Saturday: collect a pile of parts from TPS (and fit a couple of them)
Sunday: bought Thule roof bars (from member here)
Bought a Ross-Tech Micro CAN cable from eBay.

Keenly awaiting the postman all next week.

TPS order was for R-Line front lower grilles, GTI rear valance, side skirts and fitting adapters/screws, etc and a Polo short aerial. Pics are starting to go into my build thread. Can't wait for some colour coding and fitting.  :jumpmove:

Beautiful car mate....waiting to see what you have planned next.
Enjoy!!

I'm loving the Tornado Red on mine, makes a change from the blue or silver I've had on almost all my previous cars (last Golf was an exception in Sage Green).

Cheers Marko. I'd love the Edition 30 front splitter, a bit pricey though. I'm going for the colour coded GTI valance for now (next month or so) and cc'd GTI rear & skirts. Can't wait!

Keenly hunting for a good priced RCD510 too. My last one I bagged for £180 on eBay!

Chance browse on eBay found me a RCD510 with 15 mins to go and no bids...

...wait and see.

Will probably need a new CAN gateway as my car is a Sept 2006 model. Can anybody remind me what part number of CAN gateway is fine (is it anything past revision 'L'?)

It's dangerous being the owner of a second standard mk5 Golf (whilst being a member on here). :scared: All the info/part number gathering, idea finding/copying, trials, etc that took me over a year to mod my previous Golf is all just hanging over my new car's head. I kept a record of everything I done to my last car so have every part number and detail in the book.

After 5 days of ownership (of a car I said I'd keep fairly standard...) I now have the following plans for parts mostly already bought or to be obtained:

Outside/Bodywork-
Colour coded front valance with unpainted GTI splitter
Colour coded GTI sideskirts
Half Colour Coded GTI rear Valance
GTI Headlights
R-Line Front Fog Grilles
GTI Front Top Grille
Standard GT lower centre grille
Polo 6R Aerial
Thule Roof Bars (when required)

Interior-
RCD510 Stereo
Latest Revision CAN Gateway
Armrest MDI with iPod interface
GTI Flat bottom Steering Wheel
Cruise Control

...in the future...

Engine/Wheels/Brakes/Exhaust-
Remove DPF and fit delete pipe (maybe full downpipe)
Remap to suit DPF delete
Braided Brake Lines front and Rear

I'll update here as and when parts are acquired/turn up in the post/are fitted.  :happy2:

Exactly what I am aiming to do with my car! I'm keeping my eyes out for an Ed30 front splitter at the min too.

Any info where you found the photos? Any more of them, i.e. the whole car? I think the VW centre caps my just be stuck on top of the original caps (see last picture).

^^^^ Never saw a photo of the whole car. I cant remember where the photos are from, sorry. Found them on the interweb and they were in my Photobucket.  I was going for Silver TD's myself before I bought my current wheels, they look the nuts IMO.

So my VCDS Cable Arrived today. Along with fiddling with all the settings and getting it all 'just so' I found out I have a 21 byte highend CECM.  :jumpmove: All that's missing from having a 30 byte one would be cornering fog lights (that I would use anyway!).

However I found a couple of odd faults. Can anybody help me out here? I'll be installing a RCD510 over the weekend so can get in to investigate the antenna issue.

Luckily I already have a better CAN gateway in the post as my old 1K0 907 530 H wouldn't cut the mustard with a 2nd gen radio.

Ok, my first attempt at logging any data using VCDS (Engine - Block 011).

I've been having a slight issue with my turbo/boost every now and then. I wanted to try and replicate it and also to see if my car is remapped.

So I logged the boost (not shown here yet) and the Torque (Nm) which is split into Driver Requested(Blue line) Actual limit (Green Line) and Smoke limit (Red Line)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq446%2Fsandydodds%2FQuickLogGraphBKD_zps7ab1d70b.png&hash=eebdbeb36b4f9c071882964a8246126e92d4013c)

Can anybody tell me if they have heard of/experienced this hesitation of the BMN engine/turbo before.

From the graph/numbers I peaked at 428 Nm of Torque so I guess the car is remapped after all (I bought it not knowing it was mapped).

I'll post this in the VCDS region of the forum when I have time tonight. Thanks for any help/insight.

I don't think I can help with your hesitation issue but just for info, the 170 is the BMN engine which also uses a different turbo to the BKD  :happy2:

Arrgh, typo error. I'm so used to typing about my previous Golf. I do have the BMN engine. Thanks Matt. What's your power/torque figures? I was only seeing 1.6 BAR max of boost being requested. Quite low for a diesel (that's probably mapped).

I have mine dyno'd a couple of weeks ago. Ran 200bhp/447Nm. I did find that it is over fuelling a fair bit though which is why I get lots of smoke. Going to get it looked at soon.

Also due to the limitations of VCDS you could be running more than 1.6Bar but it won't show that it is.

Cheers.

The Trade Parts Specialist (a subsidiary on the VW Group)

They can source you any VW/Audi/etc part but are probably same price as VW unless a mate in the motor industry can order them for you thru a trade account. Garages do get discount. I've got part no's and prices for gti rear valance, side skirts, adapters, screws, polo aerial and R-Line front grilles (pictured in my signature). Will need to post them soon. I'm gonna paint and fit my skirts and rear valance at the end of Sept.

Gti front splitter £103

Gti rear valance £69

Now for the good bit.

Ed30 sideskirts £658

Ed30 front splitter £293

Ed30 rear valance £491      :scared:

Very good.

I like the before and after photos.  Looks good, nice subtle improvements; did you have to trim the (bottom of) polo aerial so it can screw into the base, or was it a straight swap?

Regarding the aerial fault, check the cables behind the stereo, sometimes people shove the unit in and kink the cable. A double adaptor might be required for your newer radio aerial.

You can check the antenna using vcds, if a suspect cable you can normally wiggle it and see output change on/off.

There are 2 antenna, one is heated screen element other is on the roof, it switches and uses the one with best signal on its own. The roof aerial is powered and so contains a small circuit board. this is prone to water ingress and corrosion just like the mk4.

Just a few ideas, im sure you'll sort it  :happy2:

Very good.

I like the before and after photos.  Looks good, nice subtle improvements; did you have to trim the (bottom of) polo aerial so it can screw into the base, or was it a straight swap?

I try and keep a before and after pic of most mods. Good for comparison. The Polo aerial screws straight in, no modification needed. :happy2:

Hmmm, not me selling it! Was it this car (red) you saw or my previous car (green)?

Any link?

From the graph/numbers above I peaked at 428 Nm of Torque so I guess the car is remapped after all (I bought it not knowing it was mapped).

I'll post this in the VCDS region of the forum when I have time tonight. Thanks for any help/insight.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq446%2Fsandydodds%2FEngineRemapCount_zpsed11ba86.png&hash=21c0617f5c1d47579f1f174b4e5d5bedc1597e5c)

Easy to see if a car is remapped. Go to Engine 01 > Advanced Measurements > Et Voila (above)

doesn't mean it has had a remap

If you have a software updat at vw that would show too

also new modules will show one log too

Yeah, that's true I guess. Going with the car has had one flash, and is running 428 Nm of torque I am just guessing it is remapped. It is a lot quicker than my previous Golf which was running 182 bhp and 408Nm torque.

I think the only way to tell for sure would be on the dyno. Just out of interest I check my flash status and have 2 for each.

Just passed my first 1000 miles in the car. So in 27 hours 30 mins I've managed 47.0mpg. Not bad for a 2 litre with circa 200 bhp.  :P

I think the only way to tell for sure would be on the dyno. Just out of interest I check my flash status and have 2 for each.

Looking to do a rolling road then get the car properly remapped with a DPF delete pipe.

Any more info on that link Damian?

Got a short list of mods on the first/second page. I'm sure that will all change in 6 months time but that's the plan I'm running with at the min.

Absolutely nothing changed/modified on the Golf. Yet. I've had a busy September but will hopefully get my cruise control, CAN Gateway and RCD510 fitted in October. Awaiting delivery of my winter 16" wheels and my 2014 18" alloys, with added lightness.  Looking to get the car ready for winter (clay, polish, wax) can anybody recommend anywhere in Edinburgh/Lothians?

Also for the first time in my car history I'm going to get the car purposely made slower!  :stupid: Going in to a local Audi RS specialist for them to demap the car! (It's got a generic/cheapy/back of a van type job). Going to run it standard for a month or so to see if I can get rid of a couple of boost problems.  :sad1:

After that it will be decat/de-DPF downpipe and a proper remap for the car.  :driver: Will be interesting to see what difference it'll amke to the mpg and smokiness!

Also hoping to get my sideskirts and valances painted and fitted.

I know!!  And the lack of time I've had to Plastidip my front grille is also equally frustrating!! All in good time. I'll need to find an afternoon/Saturday to do my grille, it'll probably need a few coats.

I also arranged to buy another members wheels, as new but without tyres.

Tonight I have acquired 4 Pirelli's. :driver:

Opinions people? The wide spoke leave the brakes and discs very exposed. Need to paint them up ASAP.

How many wheels. I currently have the choice of:

17" Classix (OEM on the 170 GT TDi)
16" Imola alloys with winter tyres
18" Pirelli Alloys
18" Team Dynamic Pro 1.2's in silver!

Very tempted to fit the TD's but may wait for after winter. To keep - Pirelli's or TD's?

Thanks for the PM this morning. I'll give Davie a visit next week and see what deal he can give me. Just collected a fron GTI valance today so I have the full GTI kit to be colour coded.

All in due time (when money allows)!

I have another set of 18's (SEAT BBS RD256) that I need to shift, ideal for winters as they're a bit scruffy. Need to get the camera out and start selling.

Oh yeah and a set of BMW 16" steelies... ;-)

See page one of this thread for a red Ed30 in silver Pro 1.2's. Lovely! Think I'm gonna go with the TD's and 16" Imola's for winter (I already have the wheels and tyres). Might look out for 17" Monza's for next winter.

Eventually got the car into a local garage so I could have a poke/look about underneath. I've had a rattle and slight handling issue for a couple of weeks and the afore mentioned random loss of boost.

Verdict is: front ARB has come out of one of its mounts, the horizontal one on the console/subframe driver's side.

Question is: do I need a new anti-roll bar or can I fit a new mount? The ARB has all the paint rubbed off round about where it's moving and is now rusting.

What ARB do I go for? Buying an aftermarket set (front/rear) may be cheaper than getting a replacement OEM part.

Secondly - the oil pipe that goes to the turbo is leaking. Looks like it's from the end, i.e. possibly just the seals. Is this just a standard fix or is there a better set of seals to replace?

No pics as I was busy poking about with gloves and a torch.

Not sure on the ARB mate but Alex at AKS has told me the oil leak from the turbo is quite common. I get a little from mine and can see it whenever I get underneath. Been told its nothing to worry about as its only a tiny amount. Regular oil level check should reveal of its becoming a major issue.

Getting an OEM front ARB fitted today, along with turbo pipe oil seals. Will be investigating a DPF-delete pipe next (probably Darkside Developments) and a remap.

Looking to sell my new GTI front valance (in packaging) and centre splitter now, as I've picked up an ABS plastic copy part of the Votex Splitter.

This month I'll be getting all paintwork completed and fitted, maybe a remap at the end of November.  :driver:

Winter wheels and tyres will be going on in the next few weeks also. Looking forward to the comfiness of 16" wheels but not the poor looks.  :ashamed:

Yeah get the Darskide one. Lovely bit of kit. You will have to tuck the DPF sensors out the way though as it doesn't have the holes for them. Not required once the DPF is removed but need to be left connected or it throws a fault.

Mine are just tucked down the back of the insulation on the bulkhead  :happy2:

Yes and no Marko. I have all my previous maps (files on laptop) but they are coded to the ECU of your car. It has it's own code (like a VIN) so they can't be used on any other car.

The point of having one of these:
- ability to load map on/off your car when you want
- STS (Self Tuning System) can hold 3 maps - standard, Eco, Performance, Race. Whatever you want/buy.
-also does basic 4 digit fault codes. Worked well on my BMW as I didn't buy the equivalent of VCDS for the 3 series.

Having an STS gives the owner 25% off a remap from Shark Performance IIRC.

You'll be glad to hear you don't need to leave your house. I think the purpose of the STS (and other similar tuning modules is that you can buy the thing online (£150 from Shark). You then plug it into your car and read the car's standard map.

Email this to Shark with your requirements (I got my EGR and catalysts mapped out on my 320d).

They will email you back the map files, all you gotta do is upload them to the STS Unit then onto you car. :-)

- 4 winter tyres (very good Hankook I*cepts) on 16" wheels. Need to switch to summers and buy new wheels (17/18").  :sad1:
- Lacquer peel getting fairly bad on the roof and bonnet. Bonnet awash with stone chips. Quoted £900 to paint wings, bonnet, bumper and roof.  :sad1:
- Turbo very close to giving up the ghost. most of the time it's intermittent (boost) sometimes works fine. No whine/noise at all!
Quoted £780+vat plus labour, oil and oil feed pipe.  :sad1:
- Clutch is completely out by the time you reach the biting point. Highest the clutch will go. There is no slipping but I've driven the car 7000 miles and still not used to it. New clutch?  :sad1:
- Grating noise from front suspension
- Headlights seem to last 3-4 months. Replaced for the 2nd time already!  :sad1:
- I've just sold all my cool toys (still to sell an RCD510)  :sad1:

Anyway... not that I need an excuse but I have decided to call it a day and part ways from VW...   :sad1:
